I might finally come to be worth something to society! Maybe...?

Hi Mefites. I'll be starting an online medical coding and billing course in January ( given by the AAPC), after graduating from a relatively well respected state school with a psychology BA in May and finding out far too late in the game that it would leave me with nil in terms of job prospects. After building up quite a bit of credit card debt and deciding that man cannot live on Hulu and Facebook alone, as I've been doing for six months, I decided to look into opportunities that required relatively little training to get started with, and happened upon medical billing, something that seems to fit me quite well. I'm tempering my enthusiasm however, because no amount of Googling seems to give me a clear sense of my path once the course is over. Help? [more inside]

Mom went to hospital with difficulty moving legs, was berated by doctor

Hello everyone, my mom was taken to a hospital by ambulance a few mornings ago when she couldn't move her legs and get out of bed. This stems from a previous issue with nerve damage and spinal problems which she's had surgery for before. She met the same doctor from her previous surgery, whom she couldn't pay, and was berated and threatened by him. [more inside]

Botox injections and neutropenia

Are there risks in having botox injections for a neutropenia sufferer? A relation of mine is determined to have botox injections to get rid of wrinkles, however, they suffer badly from cyclic neutropenia which means that their immune system is often weak and have white blood cell issues and consequently they get infections frequently. I am aware that botox is botulinum toxin and I have kept trying to persuade her to see her doctor before having botox injections, to check whether they are safe for her in light of neutropenia. She is desperate to go ahead with this and it is hard to persuade her to get medical advice on this. From a layman's perspective, I am concerned that this may be dangerous for her. Does anybody with medical knowledge, perhaps haematology, know if this botox is safe for neutropenia sufferers? Many thanks!

What am I doing wrong at the doctor's office?

I have a doctor's appointment coming up in the next few weeks. I have healthcare coverage, but I always seem to end up with a decent sized bill anyway, even for appointments that seem to be covered. What are you supposed to say and do to avoid this? This gets rather long inside. [more inside]

I cut my finger. Pretty badly?

Hospitalfilter: I cut my finger a few hours ago and somehow managed to peel a bit of skin. Is this something I need to see a doctor about or can I roll with hydrogen peroxide, bactine, and gauze? I have insurance but I don't have a doctor, so if I have to see one, I'll have to go the ER. Pics are a touch gross. http://amandawaller.imgur.com/finger

What can I say 'no' to?

What treatments/procedures/personnel can you decline in the hospital? I know that I have the legal right to decline anything, but does the hospital have to continue to serve me if I do? Does it matter if I do or don't have a regular doctor affiliated with the hospital? Does it matter if its an emergency or not? [more inside]
