My ISP's new "feature" of rerouting incomplete URLs to their own custom (awful) search page is hijacking my normal browser behavior of completing URLs with .com. Anything I can do to reassert normalcy? [more inside]

My inamorata works for a company that is, surprise surprise, experiencing economic difficulties. One area where they are hurting is web hosting. Their site is costing them about $600 a month, which is waaay out of line for their site: html with some Flash, nothing special, not even any video. It changes rarely. Help me get my domain back. My domain name expired. My spam filter ate the renewal messages so I never saw them. Simple as that. I'm scrambling to fix the problem but I'm having big problems reaching an actual human at namecheap.com (the domain registrar I used) to renew. To make things worse, I run a small ISP so this affects over 1000 people directly. What can I do? I have backup domains but that switch would be very painful for my customers.

nameroute.com -- has anyone had good or bad experiences with them as a host? i believe they are also somehow related to hostroute.com, in case that helps.
