Hotel crafting with a toddler?

I'm leaving for 20 days in a hotel room with a three year old in tow. At home, we do a lot of crafting, and I'd like to bring something to work on in the evenings that is safe around her, bonus if she can join in.As the three year old loves to unravel my knitting and can only sort-of crochet, is there something else? Seeking DIY holiday gifts to create: shoestring budget, expensive taste

I want to get to work ASAP on holiday gifts and am looking for your favorite DIY gift ideas that have fairly broad appeal. Would prefer they not be holiday themed, so that they're gifts people can enjoy year round, or at least longer than the holiday season. They will also need to be tailored to my shoestring budget, but still reflect a sense of 'expensive taste' (I like things to look and be nice, and know this can be done without spending much money). Details on my personal DIY and crafting skills inside, as well as examples of DIY gifts I've made in the past, inside. [more inside]

Kids Arts & Science Room

We have a spare room that we're turning into an Arts & Science room for the kids (13 year old girl and 8 year old boy). It's in a walk-out basement with a painted concrete floor and a window. We have some ideas but little knowledge in how to setup a room for them to create and explore. We have a cheap beginner's chemistry set, some art and craft supplies, and...that's about it. What ideas can we implement with the little expertise and money we have? [more inside]

Stuck indoors, how can I get a spray paint finish on glass object without dying form fumes?

I need to paint a bunch of glass candle holders, but don't want brush strokes and can only do this in my 1 bdrm apartment. I tried building a spray paint booth, but the fumes were intense and I still managed to get spray paint everywhere. Looking into airbrush or spray guns but they don't seem very safe for indoor use either. [more inside]
