RedGreenShowFilter: I've got a bunch of crisp paperback romance novels I've scavenged from dumpsters around town, and I'd rather turn them into something than read or try selling them. What can I build using them? I'm thinking clear box tape instead of duct, so the corny covers will still be visible. Bonus points for something handy. [more inside]

I'm looking for a holiday destination. Last weeks of October where I can hike (mountains), bike (atb) and learn diving (padi). No resorts or too much luxury, just basic accomodation. I'm alone so it would be nice to meet more travellers.
Doe you have suggestions?

Whilst at the quack's for a check-up to do a diving course, he informed me I had a systolic heart murmur. I've googled (of course) but wondered if anyone else had experience so I can set my anxiety 'defcon' level appropriately! I have to have an 'echocardiogram'- potential problems for SCUBA? Thanks mefiers...

Are Force Fin-brand "slim fins" just as good for recreational SCUBA diving and snorkeling as the standard "original/dive" model? I like all the adjustable options of the slim fin, but I am wondering why every vendor - not just the examples on Amazon - show the more customizeably and sturdier looking slim fin as being $10-$20 less expensive than the original/dive model. A friend thrice removed claims that as a kid, he used to shut out the world by inverting a trash can, tying a few cinder blocks to it, and submerging himself in his parents' swimming pool. I dig this story... [more inside]

I'm exceedingly susceptible to seasickness. I'm an avid scuba diver, and I'm now learning how to sail. Both activities put me in smallish boats, and if there's any chop, it's only a matter of time before I am leaning over the side. I don't want my inner ears to keep me from doing things that I enjoy. Please share your tips on keeping your inner ears happy and your lunch down. [more inside]

Divers of Metafilter, help us plan our honeymoon! We are taking three weeks this summer and plan to spend part of that time scuba diving, perhaps on a live-aboard. We are thinking South Pacific and/or Indonesia, but haven't managed to narrow it down any further than that. Tips, suggestions, and warnings welcomed. [more inside]

On October 11th, I'm going to be jumping out of an airplane (with a parachute). I would like to be able to take a few pics on the way down. So, how in the heck can I do that with the air rushing by and the obvious distraction of falling to the Earth?
