need to find a therapist (?) who specializes in BDD & eating disorders

looking for recommendations for a therapist or specialist in LA area who can help treat my extreme obsession with appearance. I know I am suffering with a type of eating disorder and I think a form of OCD or body dysmorphic disorder, too. it's ruining my life. I am sick of this pathetic problem. there are actual sick people in the world and I'm worried about such trivial things and I can't help it. I want to stop thinking like this and am ready to get help. more inside. [more inside]

Have you experienced derealization as a child bipolar?

As an adult bipolar (BPD II) at 32 I'm still trying to make sense of odd things from my childhood. I have been able to figure out that a lot of incongruent behaviors as a kid relate to childhood manifestation of BPD: Night terrors, a certain precocious tendency, bouts of mania and depression, generally boilerplate things. But as an early teen I had some interesting derealization/quiet euphoria experiences that don't fit my notions of how Bipolar and I work together. More after the break. [more inside]

How do I navigate my eating disorder with my (likely former) boyfriend?

At my therapist's suggestion, I want my boyfriend to treat my binge eating as if it is not negative, but actually positive. He claims that this is insane and akin to buying drinks for an alcoholic. This difference of opinion led me to say that we shouldn't see each other anymore, and I want to know if I made the right decision, or I am indeed being irrational. Long story ahead. [more inside]

I think my child has a sensory processing disorder. Now what?

Micropanda (4) is sweet, bright, kind, and empathetic. He is also hypersensitive to sound, messy fingers, car motion, and water temperature, among other things. He had a rocky transition to preschool this fall - he behaves ok at school, but appears to exhaust his coping skills there, and has become volatile and meltdown-prone at home. Some deficiencies in his gross motor skills are also becoming apparent. I am becoming increasingly convinced that he has a sensory processing disorder with a motor component. On advice of our pediatrician, we have recently started him in once-weekly occupational therapy. I am wondering what other steps I need to be taking. Wall of snowflakes within. [more inside]

How to stop self-sabotage and fear of success

For a few months I have seriously been working on getting control of my binge-eating disorder. I tend to have a binge-free streak going with weight dropping off and control over my eating - then once I start to see change and get excited about the future - I binge. This is complicated by recent changes in my social life. [more inside]

Almost everything bothers me. Can I be fixed?

For most of my adulthood, I've been unable to fully deal with normal things the way most people seem to be able to. I have a decent full time job, a nice home, and a great husband... really nothing major to complain about. But many things bother me to the point that it affects my daily life, and I want it to stop but I don't know how to make it. [more inside]

Help me rejoin the land of the living.

I've been diagnosed with idiopathic hypersomnia - which means I sleep too much and nobody can figure out why. With the diagnosis, I was essentially told that there's nothing the medical establishment can do for me beyond prescribing modafinil [Provigil]. Provigil only works a little for me, and is extremely expensive. I am currently disabled by my oversleeping (11-16 hours a day) and my inability to wake up before noon, and it's sort of ruining my life. I feel really let down by my doctors and hopeless about the future. Is there anything else I can do to manage this condition and/or my life with it? Way too much more inside. [more inside]

what works when zoloft does not?

Why does sleepiness elude me?

As I head into the darkness of winter in Northern England, I'm starting to notice the same pattern I suffered from last year...sleeping even less than I normally do (4-6 hours instead of 6-7). I'm not even sleepy or remotely tired until 2, 3, sometimes even 4 am, when I force myself to fall asleep. I wake up at 8 or 9 (sometimes earlier). Tips on Fighting Irrational Anxious Thoughts?

I struggle greatly with anxiety and am on a crazy amount of meds simply to sleep and relax. I am doing things to get through such as exercise, yoga and breath/meditating. One of the things that I read and have been implementing is answering 'cognitive distortions' with reality-based answers. Basically, I think I'm helpless (it spirals from an event to "I'm going to lose my job" all the way to "I'm not going to make it"). I've read the books like Feeling Good and do techniques on paper but am not sure how to think realistically and come up with any responses that I believe. This has been going on for some time. Any others who struggle and have tips on how you have tackled cognitive distortions (aka Bullshit Thoughts)? I am not in a hurry and am willing to put in solid effort. I am asking for help but am willing to try to believe I'm not helpless in the long haul. (BTW, I haven't been able to afford a counselor....yet.)
