Claude Bless America, Man That I Love

Shmoop Filter: My boyfriend always sings me this Harry Belefonte song while changing the words to "Yes, Lorena, my sweetheart from California." I'm trying to figure out what songs work with the name "Claude" swapped in. It would help if the genders worked and it was something that was halfway appropriate to sing to your loved one. Hopefully whatever word "Claude" is substituted for has the same number of syllables and kind of rhymes, otherwise I'm just awkwardly cramming his name into random songs, which I'm pretty good at without Metafilter's help.

Goofy is absolutely encouraged. I'm thinking something like "Claudey, Claudey, Claudey, Claude" instead of "Cloudy, Cloudy, Cloudy, Cloud" in this Ween song, though something I don't have to be baked as a cake to sing would be nice, too.

How do I express "beautiful yet disgusting" with Kanji?

How do I express this idea in Kanji? I am making something that I would like to decorate with Kanji character(s) meaning, basically "beautiful yet disgusting/distasteful." Kind of like a car wreck, something that is fascinating and aesthetically pleasing in one way, but horrible in a different way. Thanks!

My bike gear's gross at the end of the day.

How do I dry out my rain gear after a wet bike commute? In between last rainy season and this one, I changed jobs. I commute by bike, and my last place of employment had a bike room that was heated and de-humidified in the winter. The lockers were high-school-locker type, metal with vents, so rainy bike gear would be more or less dry (and if not dry, at least just barely damp) by the end of the day.

Fast forward to this year. My new place has no bike facilities, but my gym is conveniently located just two blocks away from my work. So I rented a locker from the gym, and intend to use that over the winter to store my wet stuff during the day - I share a cube with two people, and have neither the room to spread my stuff out nor the inclination to subject my cube-mates to my soaking wet riding gear.

The problem is, my gym's lockers are in...well, they're in the locker room, of course, which is humid, due to the proximity to the showers. The lockers themselves are made of wood, and the doors have no vents in them so air can't circulate through the locker.

So, yesterday, it rained on the way to work, and I got soaked. I changed, went to work, and came back to the gym to change...and my clothes were still wet and disgusting. Is there anything I can put in my locker to aid in the drying process?

I keep thinking of those "DESICCANT DO NOT EAT" packets that come with electronics; is there something like that I could put in a locker, or something else I can do to remove as much moisture as possible from a smallish enclosed space?

Yes, I realize it's disgusting.

Is it possible to ferment potable alcohol from animal sources? Like, fluids? Okay, I recognize this is extremely disgusting, and wholeheartedly agree. I'm not asking this because I want to actually ever drink such a thing. It's just idle curiosity, because I don't know a ton about the fermentation process.

That said, is it possible to ferment blood? How about semen? Would you need to add sugar? Really, just what would be the process involved here? Or, if it's not possible, what prevents it?

I once heard something along the lines of there being three foods in the world all of which hardly anyone enjoys the taste, even though many people enjoy at least two. One of them was peanut butter. Another might have been Vegemite.

Where might I have heard this possibly false factoid? Any idea what the three items were?

Yummy disgusting

Since it's almost Halloween and all, I need ideas for foods that look disgusting but don't taste disgusting. Does anyone have any good recipes or sources? In particular, I'm interested in bodily fluids/discharges and body parts, human or otherwise, but I try to keep an open mind.

What options exist for confronting dirty in-laws?

Do you have any advice on how to handle filthy, filthy in-laws? Here's the super-condensed version-

Parents-in-law are filthy people living in a filthy house. No hyperbole here. There is animal urine and feces ground into the carpet in every room in the house. I've heard that there's mold growing in most of the house and they suffer from constant respiratory infections. (neither my wife nor I have stepped foot in the house in five years - we don't want to expose our daughter to the nastiness) Plus, they're hoarders, both of useless stuff and animals. Seriously, fire is the only way to clean their house at this point.

I don't just say this as a son-in-law either; my wife and her older sister agree on this point. They are in the process of talking with the younger siblings in order to form a consensus on what to do about the situation.

My question is, what can be done? Once the kids all agree that something needs to be done the options are confronting their parents and... what? Call the county? Have the house condemned? Call mental services? Sadly, just saying, "your house is dirty and needs to be cleaned," won't be enough, as there may be mental stability issues, and direct confrontation is likely to drive the parents deeper into their downward spiral. They're likely going to have to bring the force of law to bear, so what are the options? What services exist for this situation?

Why is my son suddenly peeing everywhere BUT the toilet? My 4 year old son has been potty trained for about a year and a half-no accidents either during the day or at night since he's been using the toilet and he was surprisingly easy to transition from diapers to underwear. Within the last month he's been peeing on the toilet seat (rather than lifting it up like he was taught), peeing on the cloth shower curtain (he totally is Picasso like in his aim) and over the weekend my husband caught him peeing in his trash can in his bedroom. WTF? We've asked him why he does this but he just hangs his head and doesn't answer. He says he doesn't have to suddenly go and it doesn't sting or hurt so I don't think he has a UTI.

What Did I Eat?

Who: Me
Where: Near Ocean City, on the great Assawoman.
Why: Alcohol.
When: Sunday, 4 PM.
How: Tossed to the back of my throat, and swallowed with the Why.
What: Aye, there's the rub. On the boat Sunday in the Assawoman Bay near Ocean City, Maryland, USA, we saw many 4-5 inch long pinkish worms swimming at the surface. Not only did we manage so catch one of the sea creatures, but I managed to ingest one, along with a healthy swig of beer.
One of my friends has proposed that I ate this. I thought it might be the Osedax mucofloris (bone-eating snot-flower). Any other marine biologists have guesses?

eating "disgusting" animal parts

What are some "disgusting" animal parts (i.e animal parts that "normal" Americans don't eat for reasons of revulsion) that are good for you nutritionally speaking? Also, what are some animal parts that are unhealthy for you? Bonus points if the animal parts are cheap and/or readily available. An example that comes to mind might be liver.

Maggots!

How do I clean up maggots? This is awful, and I'm sorry for subjecting you all to this, but while I was away overseas, my roommate left a bag of garbage in our backroom (on a carpet) for about three weeks. She's moved out now. When I came back and took the garbage out, there was a puddle of stinky brown garbage juice under it, and, yep, some writhing maggoty-things blinking in the new light. How should I get rid of them? Should I wait a while until I know they're good and dead? This is a terrible state of affairs.
