They could be the protagonist, or someone else in the book whose disappearance drives the story. Lilia in Emily St John Mandel's 'Last Night In Montreal' and Kathryn Carlyle in Rupert Thomson's ah, 'Kathryn Carlyle' are perfect examples.
My brother has been out of touch with the family for like six months, not returning calls or emails or picking up his physical mail.
