I've been a quadriplegic since the age of fifteen due to a diving accident. I live in the beautiful Pacific Northwest with some of the best trails in the world-- the Olympics, Cascades and National Rainforest, to name a few--in my backyard, but I've never been able to experience them. Can anyone help with a reasonably safe solution. I pictured a carrying device with two poles and a
harness where two strong individuals rested the poles on their shoulders. Any engineers out there with some nifty designs or ideas. I am 6'2 and about 220 lbs in good shape and sturdy physique. I would love to join my friends for a hot brandy and stories around the campfire.

I'm involved in the set-up of a public access space (in Manchester, England). While we have two ground-floor bathrooms, neither is wheelchair-accessible. Having spent no time in a wheelchair, nor time in a bathroom with a person in a wheelchair, I'd like to know a few things about making one of the bathrooms accessible... [more inside]

What are the repercussions for someone operating a wheelchair or motorized scooter who repeatedly runs into and/or injures others--accidentally or otherwise? Are the wheelchair-bound required to have insurance? Who pays for damages? Can restrictions be put on their speed or on the areas in which they're allowed to operate their wheelchairs? I'm seeking resources and/or detailed information for a research project and so far haven't had much luck.

Asking for my partner: What to DO if you live in a country where you speak the language quite well but it's not your mother tongue, but have 1:1 English literature degree, a fair bit of life experience and common sense, are interested in working with people but the idea of another crappy office job almost brings on a panic attack? My mother needs to find a new place to live. The house we currently live in will be set to go up for sale early next year. But repairs need to be made first, so my family would like us both to move ASAP. I’m looking at a move to Queens, but my mother has Multiple Sclerosis and has a limited income. All she has are her Social Security disability payments each month, which only come to about $600-700, and food stamps. I can’t afford to take her with me. [more inside]

I'm working to transfer a person on oxygen from San Diego to Oregon. It's a long trip and this person is mostly wheelchair bound. Overexertion causes breathlessness and anxiety. We are trying to effect this ourselves and the oxygen is proving the most problematic. At 12 liter flow, getting enough oxygen is a major technical issue if moving by vehicle. We're talking a 3 day trip with a stop halfway in Watsonville for a day. [more inside]

We need to move out of the Los Angeles area within the year to find someplace cheaper to live. The show-stopper is our daughter, almost 25, who is retarded. She lives in a splendid group home and attends a splendid day program that is lovingly but inexorably moving her toward independent living, including a real job. This is essential (no sibs) for her life after we're gone. So we need to qualitatively assess services for the retarded in other states. How do we do this? California may well be the high-water mark for the support the retarded get in this country. If there's someplace better we need to know where and why. There are no data, so far, to help with this.
