How am I supposed to repay a scholarship based on financial need?

How do I solve this? My kid can't go on a school trip that I never paid for; now they're saying I owe the school $3,000. One of my kids is a senior in high school and is active in a select chorus. The chorus director arranged a $3,000 trip to Europe for April break. I wasn't too excited about this trip and initially said no. Because my kids qualify for free lunch, the school said they would arrange a scholarship for her to attend, and based on peer pressure, I reluctantly agreed. [more inside]

Master Moviemaking with the Mefites

Can you recommend online videos or blogs which dissect, compare, and contrast different elements of filmmaking: camerawork, lighting, directing, editing, pacing, music, dialogue, color, etc? And if you went to film school or took classes, what were some lessons/first-hand experiments that really opened your eyes to the art and subjective nature of film? [more inside]

Best Music Videos of the 00s.

The Directors Series is a neat collection of great music videos, ordered by director, but leans heavily towards the 90s. If you were putting together a similar collection of music videos for the 00s what directors and what videos would be essentials for it?

Notable Foreign Film Directors

Having exhausted the English-language scene, I'm wondering what foreign directors have catalogs worth going through. I've already taken a look at the works of Pedro Almodovar and Wong Kar Wai, and would love to know who else has earned the respect of Mefi cinephiles. Limit your answer to directors whose catalog is in bulk created after 1970, please.

Fran├žois Girard and Whit Stillman

Two directors whose work I greatly admire, Fran├žois Girard and Whit Stillman, have been MIA for quite some time. Can someone tell me where either has been, what they've been doing since their last films and what their future plans are? I've heard whispers and seen snippets online, but am hoping some industry-savvy MeFi-ite can provide something more substantial. Is this a case of lack of profitability completely trumping quality and forcing these two out of the director's chair?

Take one step to the left, then two to the right.

In modern screenplays written for movies and television is it acceptable to include a fair share of Direction? I understand it used to be more common but has fallen out of vogue. (more) [more inside]
