I'm looking for advice and resources on how to use improv to flesh out a written scene.
I'm not looking for freestyle improv where you're trying to create a new situation, or general theater games, but a more targeted form of improv, where you already have a scene and characters and backstory and dialog, but you want to get the actors to exercise their imagination and flesh out the relationships rather than just play the dialog that's already on the page.
What are some parameters? How involved should an improv scenario be in this situation? Should you tell the actors where to end up? How far do you let it go?

I'm a writer who has two one-act plays on in a theatre. I am also directing them but this will be my first time working as a director. What do you think makes a good director? What positive and negative experiences have you have and what could I do to make this go brilliantly?

What did early (1900-1920) french film directors actually do? I get the sense from my research that early film directors in France were more like what one associates with producers nowadays. The "director" chose the script, chose the actors and the budget, and then left the execution to a cameraman who basically filmed everything as if he were recording live theater. This explains how someone like Louis Feuillade could "direct" hundreds of films each year. Is this assumption correct?

I'm directing The Vagina Monologues here at my university. Rehearsals are going well, for the most part. The younger women, all students, mostly theater students, listen when I speak, take direction well, and are basically a dream to work with. My problems are with the older women, who are all professors or health care professionals who have never acted before(MI).

Continuation of my film:
I have a good passage written out, and I had my actors recite it today. It sounds pretty good, and I gave them direction during the rehearsal, but I still don't know exactly what I am doing. What should I make sure to do at this very early stage in rehearsing? (Script Inside)
