Why do I get headaches from resistance training?

Why did I start getting sudden, brief, migraine-like headaches when performing a high number of repetitions of a strength training exercise? I am male, 23, 6', 158 lbs., generally in good health. I started strength training about three months ago. I weighed about 145 when I started.

The routine I've been following consists largely of sets of 5, and I haven't had this problem with those exercises for the most part; although as my squat has surpassed my bodyweight I've started to notice it creep up towards the end of a set.

But when I'm doing an exercise like the pullup, chinup, or dip, and I'm trying to perform as many reps as I can, after 6 or 7 I'll suddenly be struck by an intense headache. I started to feel it today after about 25 pushups. It doesn't feel localized in any particular part of my head. It lasts for a minute or less and then fades gradually. It's similar to (but more intense than) the pain I experience if I cough or sneeze the day after I get a migraine. I've experienced migraines with auras a few times a year for the last several years. The last one I had was a few weeks ago.

This wasn't happening when I started strength training. I worked my way up from being unable to do a chinup to doing a max set of 8. I've also done up to 10 weighted dips with no problems.

I spend about an hour lifting three times a week, although I do pullups and chinups much more frequently as I have a bar at home. I always eat before exercising and drink plenty of water between sets.

What's going on here? Should I make a doctor's appointment or will it go away on its own? Do I need to take a break from training? I've been avoiding increasing my max number of reps on these exercises and have been doing ok, but obviously this isn't ideal.

Need some oral fixation!

I need to stay on a quite impressive roll of having given up a long held vice. Could you all please assist in this effort? Specifics inside. Brief history: Have chewed tobacco for most of my life. Just turned 40 and promised my bride I would give it up at 40. Most recently (past 3-4 years it has been the Swedish variety Snus. Before that it was the nasty Skoal, Copenhagen combo). I have been free of this monkey (without relapse) for about a month.

The big question: I need to continue feeding my oral fixation but am running out of ideas. What I need are specific favorites. No gum or candy please. And nothing generic like carrots (unless they are infused with blue cheese). Anyway, the closest I can come to an example is the Trader Joe's brand of habanero pistachios. Almost perfect, except I am really tired of them. So please be specific by brand and maybe where I can find your suggestions. I don't care what it is provided it is not sweet. Thanks a lot.

Help me blend, not bland, my way through summer

It's about to be summer in Texas. I bought a smallish food processor. Please give me your best food-processor recipes. I realize there have been discussions of salsa, baba ghanouj and hummus here on the green... and wondered, what else is there? In the summer it's too g.d. hot to cook lots of times, so for example, we make a cold pasta salad with a vegan pesto that's tasty. What other things can I make with the food processor that are like this? Sauces, dips, dressings, salsas, guacamoles, etc.? Soup base, maybe? Can I make nut butter in this thing as well? I have a rice cooker too, and can use it without overheating the kitchen, so if you have a recipe for something that goes well over rice, couscous or quinoa, bring it on!

I prefer vegetarian recipes; however, if you have a bizarre meat-based recipe, let's hear that too, just for the heck of it.

Healthy chips and dip?

Healthy chips and dip? Lo, long have I quested thro' the dales and deep, like Bilbo for the One Ring, seeking chips that art not crap for my diet. (That would be “crisps” for you heathen Brits. And yes, I know Tolkien was British.)

Recently I happened upon Snyder's of Hanover sunflower and corn chips. They have a very nice texture but the flavor is meh.

In dip news, I like Middle Eastern food in general. I like حُمُّص بالطحين but besides putting it in falafel I've never found much else to use it with, much less dip in it.

But… Whoso putteth these chips in this dip, shall be the King of the Britons! There's a snacktacular gestalt between these two things, creating a Nietzschean Über-Snack, that I find delicious. And looking at the nutrition facts the combination doesn't look too bad health-wise: no trans fat, not too much fat overall, average carbs and below average sodium for a snack food. Definitely better than potato chips and onion dip, in any case.

So I ask you, me droogy droogs, what sort of healthy chips / crisps do you know of that I could put in my hummus, or healthy dip that I could dip my Hanoverian sunflower chips in, or other healthy combination of chips and dip?

Trader Joe's Spicy Black Bean Dip recipe?

I've been introduced to Trader Joe's Spicy Black Bean Dip and I absolutely love it; problem is that I live in Canada and can't buy it!

So, I've decided the best alternative is to make it. Does any one have a recipe for it? The ingredients (in order) are: Black Beans, Water, Tomato Paste, Onions, Distilled Vinegar (From Corn), Honey, Salt, Jalapenos, Spices, Garlic. The Nutritional information (if that somehow helps) is available at Spark People

Sovtek made ICs?

I recently came into possession of a Sovtek-branded 7474 IC, listed as having been made in the USSR in October 1988. While it's a standard 7474, I can't find any information about Sovtek having ever made ICs. Have any of you ever heard of this? Last week a coworker gave me his old box of electronics from when he took classes at ITT Tech in the mid 90s. Going through these I came across the aforementioned Sovtek-branded 7474s and 7410s. While the parts and their function is pretty standard, the Sovtek label surprised me. As far as I was aware, Sovtek was just a label on Russian (and possibly formerly Soviet?) manufactured audio gear.

I'm trying to find any info that may be available on Sovtek ICs, but the standard oracles aren't turning up any results. Anything with 'Sovtek' in it only seems to have info about tubes.

So, if I may ask, do any of you know anything about these? Maybe what company actually manufactured them, possible shared lineage with Sovtek audio kit, etc?

Thanks very much!

I've signed up for the Polar Plunge to support the Special Olympics in our area.... It's been really chilly out (Michigan) and was wondering how can I prepare for this? Any pointers for those that have done a polar dip before? If I raise enough money I will performing in a speedo. *Gulp* any tips how to minimize shrinkage or at least keep my dignity (or is that even possible in a speedo)? I believe I need to remain in the water for 10 minutes.

Your best guacomole recipes please! (read: we can't drink margaritas on an empty stomach.) There has been a thread for dip recipes, but I am having people over this weekend for pre-dinner drinks and am planning to serve up margaritas and beer. Looking for some kick-ass guac to go with it.
