I'm looking for real life food mysteries. Where would I find them?

I heard a story on This American Life HERE and it's a story about a sausage maker who inadvertently ruins their product by getting a new building. IN the end, it turned out the problem was they had shortened the route of the final delivery of the sausages and removed what was thought to be the unimportant work of a clerk named Irving. I thought it was fascinating and I want to find other stories like that. Where would I look for them?

(veggie) burgers and other analog recipes

Which standard recipes, with meat as a key ingredient, have clear vegetarian analogs? Examples, to be clear: for every hamburger, there is a veggie burger (eggplant, cauliflower, etc). Chili con carne becomes chili sin carne. For meatloaf there is Neatloaf. What else should I be thinking of? "Buy fake meat" is not heading in the right direction; "google 'vegetarian [meaty food]'" is a realistic suggestion but which foods?

Summon us a dinner genie

I have a baby, a preschooler, a commute, and a spouse who works late. I need dinner to magically appear on the table within minutes of walking in the door. I don't know if this will involve a genie, a person, a recipe, or "one easy trick restaurants don't want you to know" like those shady sidebar ads. [more inside]

What are your best recipes with yogurt?

I bought 2 pounds (the smallest size I could find) of plain whole milk yogurt, not realizing that there was an almost-empty container in the fridge. So now I have all this yogurt with a best-by date of August 5. What are your favorite ways to use it? I'm especially interested in vegetarian main dishes (bonus points for using CSA-type veggies), but would also like ways to pair it with chicken or fish.

Help me plan a fun girls night in - food questions

I am having some friends over to my house for chill night of catching up and watching movies. I very rarely socialize in my home, so I am somewhat clueless about hosting people. There will be four of us, and one person is breastfeeding so no alcohol for her. I am thinking about daiquiris since they are delicious and can easily be made with no alcohol. But I am stumped for food. [more inside]

Xmas potluck for the secular humanists, and fresh out of frankincense.

What would Jesus bring? Just moved, most of my kitchen stuff is still in boxes, but want to bring something homemade. Hosts making "a" salmon, so I assume that means whole and poached or roasted, so I'll bring a nice pinot noir. But what side or dessert or whatnot would work and be easy enough with let's say just a skillet and a pasta pot and a few tools to work with? (I don't have myrrh either.) Help! Thanks!

Dinner suggestions in Greenwich Village near the IFC Center?

Simple question this time around! I’m searching for a quick, unique and especially delicious dinner in New York around The IFC Center. The theater is located just off the A train’s West 4th stop in the village just blocks away from Washington Square Park, near parts of Bleeker street. We’ll have less than an hour before the film starts and want to try something tasty and unique. Also, cheap-ish is a plus!

This straw is too thin for this milkshake

My roommates and I would love to throw a dinner party that involves "difficult food." We're thinking of warm-ups like corn on the cob and bobbing for apples, maybe moving onto very tall sandwiches and artichokes. Maybe for dessert, a king cake with way too many kings. Any more ideas for food that's particularly difficult (and amusing) to eat?

Dinner & Drink for the Insecure Epicure

What's for dinner? I am a reasonably skilled home cook whose skills fall into that grey area between "velveeta tuna cassarole" and "foie gras terrine with fermented plum gastrique;" my culinary skill has never failed to impress dates raised on the former, but this weekend I'm supposed to cook dinner for an experienced executive chef and I'm terrified.
