I'm curious about the pricing of Chinese restaurant food in various countries. Can you give me a price range for your country or area, for either delivered or in-restaurant dining, either in your country's currency or US dollars? [more inside]
In a middle-of-the-road restaurant (i.e. not upscale, but not fast food), is it or is it not okay to leave a bunched-up, used tissue on a finished plate, alongside a bunched-up napkin, leftover food scraps and used cutlery?
I'll be staying a week in New London, CT by myself in early July. I'd like to get some recommendations for not-too-expensive places to eat, and other things to do. [more inside]
Asking for my wife, who doesn't have an account. My wife will be staying near Fort Greene Park in Brooklyn for about three weeks. She has a problem with gluten - trace amounts and cross-contamination are an issue. Looking for both dining and grocery shopping suggestions. She has relevant apps and online resources but not coming up with much to go on. Would love some local perspective. Thanks for any help you can provide.
I inherited a table that is at odds with my style and the style of my furniture, but I'm keeping. I want to get some dining chairs that tie the room together. Help me find some? [more inside]
I'm trying to pick a fine dining restaurant on Orcas Island for my best friend's 50th birthday. It looks like the top options are The Inn at Ship Bay Restaurant and the New Leaf restaurant at the Outlook Inn. They both get great reviews on Yelp and TripAdvisor, and they both have great views, and I need help choosing. [more inside]
I'm from Buffalo, but I've not been back since 2001, I will be traveling to the area to got to a wedding, and since I've been away for so long I have no idea as to what the current state of culinary affairs are in B-lo and I was always partial to Allentown, Elmwood, North Buffalo area. I need to find a great place to have dessert after a concert at Lincoln Center in New York on Saturday night. This is a date situation. [more inside]
I'll be in St. Louis on business the week of the 8th. I'd love suggestions by locals for delicious slightly upscale or super-tasty places to go for dinner in that area. Prefer to stay away from greasy heavy fare, love most ethnic or regional cuisines. [more inside]
I'm helping my friend's Maid of Honor plan the bachelorette party. Due to a miscommunication, I thought we would be a party of 6 for dinner. Nope. It's between 12 - 15 people. I need to rethink. [more inside]
I'm going to Tokyo in the fall. I'm allergic to soy. It is an allergy triggered by the soy protein, which means that tofu and edamame are not OK but soy sauce is because the protein is denatured. (This is common for people who are allergic to soy - I am no special snowflake.) The easy solution would seem to be to live on yakitori and yakiniku...but I'm also a vegetarian. Difficulty level = 11! [more inside]
Four+ days in Charleston and Savannah at the end of April. We've got a good list of things to see and do, now I turn to the HiveMind for food suggestions. [more inside]
I'm meeting up with a friend to attend a concert at Town Hall in New York next month, so I need some dining suggestions. [more inside]
We'll be in L.A. for 2-3 weekdays in mid-March, and while one of our evenings is scheduled, we have no idea what to do with the rest of our time. We'll be staying in or near Hollywood, and won't have a car, but don't mind taking transit. We're especially looking for suggestions for one really very nice, splurge-y place for dinner, as well as great inexpensive places to eat. Also interested in: coffee-snob coffee; fancy cocktails; craft beer; fun/interesting/unique places to shop; anything else that seems interesting. We also really like live shows (comedy/improv/podcast/music), but most of the L.A. shows we know about are on the weekend. And I'm planning to go to Jenette Bras for a fitting, but I'd love suggestions for any other bra shops that carry sizes in the G+ range.
I'll be in Seattle for a conference in late February. Seeking the hivemind's tips on climate, entertainment and dining. [more inside]
We just bought an ikea dining room table with the brown laminate, and we'd like to stain the plain wood ikea chairs we got to match. While we realize it will be difficult to replicate exactly, what stain or combination thereof can we use to get close to this color? The table looks a bit darker than what the product photos show, here's what it looks like in real life.
I'm looking for a culinary experience for a date in the SF Bay area or Sacramento area. Preferred budget ~$30-$60 person without drinks. Special details within. [more inside]
I'll be in Washington D.C. between Christmas and New Year's, and I need suggestions for a restaurant for a bit of an occasion dinner. Please hope! [more inside]
Visiting the Twin Cities in a few weeks with my girlfriend. She'd like to check out some walkable shopping districts with a vibrant, dense mix of stores and places to eat. But does this exist on a somewhat-large scale? [more inside]
My partner and I will be driving from San Francisco to Sea Ranch, California one day soon. Returning a few days later. We'd love some suggestions for places to stop along the way for coffee or lunch and for my partner to take photos. Even some side trips would be possible; we have the whole day. Please tell me what you love along that route! Thank you.
In order to sustain our Vermont sightseeing, we need food. What are your suggestions in the Burlington and Middlebury areas for early August? Sightseeing suggestions welcome as well. [more inside]
Hi London Mefites! I will have time during an extended layover to choose one neighbourhood of your large, international city to eat dinner, wander a little, sleep, and eat breakfast in. Which neighbourhood should I choose? [more inside]
Brooklyn dining, scandalous dress edition. Boyfriend's birthday is next week and I found a great low-cut, backless dress that will look ridiculously out of place in most dining establishments I frequent in Brooklyn. Suggestions for dinner with good food (emphasis on good food), price not an issue, where I won't feel crazy for dressing in a Manhattan scene-y way? Park Slope is home base but absolutely willing to travel.
My brother-in-law will be getting married at the outdoor chapel in Camden, ME in mid-October. Yes, the idea of an outdoor wedding along the seacost of Maine in autumn strikes me as a less-than-ideal plan, but that's a different subject altogether. I will have two weeks for visiting northern New England, so an itinerary of sorts needs developing. And here's where YOU come in! [more inside]
I'm meeting a friend in Minneapolis to help celebrate his birthday. Neither of us are familiar with the area. Help me find some places that he would he like. [more inside]
We've all seen plenty of depictions, in fiction, of enormously long dining room tables, with a husband and wife sitting at opposite ends. Usually we see those images in period pieces set in Victorian times, or more modern eras but evoking the hyper-formal rigidity that we (correctly or not) associate with the Victorians. Now, with tons of inexpensive servants for every middle-and-upper-class family, that seems doable, but did it really happen? [more inside]
I'm heading to New York in 3-4 weeks, and haven't been back in a couple years. I feel "out of the loop" when it comes to restaurants, and on top of that, I'm going with my French mother-in-law, who is pretty tough when it comes to food. In the past, being French, she's liked Balthazar & Pastisse, but found Otto too loud and kitchy. I have 3 dinner meals to book, and have NO IDEA where to start, any suggestions?
Help me organize a food contest for professional cooks! The goal is to gather a number of regional cooking professionals and have them cook their version of a regional favorite food (already predetermined.) There would be a few celebrity judges and a few people who are pretty knowledgeable about food. The contest would be public and there would be a few recipes. How would you suggest this be done? What should be included? What should be avoided?
For a boring list of logistical reasons, I'll be inside the Las Vegas airport today at dinner time, waiting for a late departing flight. I'll be hungry. [more inside]

DC/Northern Virginia experts: The other half and I have our first kid-free date night since, uh...too long. We're flexibile on dining options but I would like to find an awesome dessert place. We wouldn't mind driving someplace separate after dinner. The wrinkle is that this is for Sunday night (with a late start due to babysitting scheduling), and we'd like to avoid cupcakes. Hope us?
I'd like recommendations in Manhattan for an off the beaten path Italian restaurant that would likely still have tables available for a Valentine's Day dinner. We are in our mid 20s and price isn't an issue. Just something romantic and delicious. Many of the famous restaurants are all booked and that's fine with me - I'd prefer something a little less known. Please, any recommendations or personal experiences!
I have to go to Peoria, IL for a week starting February 6 to tend to the affairs of my mother, whose dementia is getting worse. I grew up there but I haven't been back for years, and when I did go back I stayed at Mom's. Now there is no room at Mom's because she's in assisted care. Where should I stay? [more inside]
