I'm going to be visiting Pittsburgh this weekend with four friends, staying downtown (I think City Center is the correct term?) near the Mellon Arena. We're already planning on visiting the Church Brew Works on Friday and seeing a Pirates game on Saturday. What can you recommend in terms of places to go and great eating options within walking distance of downtown/PNC Bank park? Two of us are vegetarians, and we're into cool record stores, bike shops, pubs, brunches, great independent restaurants and shops, and things unique to the city.

I have a great mid-century dining set that I finally have the room to use (yay!). However, I don't like how the chairs were reupholstered in the '80s, but won't have the chance to (re-)reupholster them till next year. So I need seat covers -- NOT slipcovers! -- in the meantime. This has turned out to be surprisingly difficult. Help! [more inside]

toronto dining: a friend of mine is leaving toronto for a job in spain and is getting some friends together for dinner. she's looking for a nice restaurant, not terrifically expensive since everyone's a student, ideally a mellow sort of place with a patio or outdoors seating, and by the lake or at least with a nice view. or at least somewhere with that kind of casual summery atmosphere. got any suggestions?

I'm an American hosting a couple of guests from Greek Cyprus for whom I am doing professional (scientific) training. We may go out to dinner on one of those nights. Will "going Dutch" be nothing unusual to them? Or being from a Mediterranean culture where friends become extended family, might they expect one of us (me or them) to pick up the entire tab? Granted I am the host and can do what I want, but I'm still interested in what they'll expect.
