Digitizing 8mm home movies

I have some home movies from 1965-67 that I would like to have digitized. The film is Kodachrome Color Movie Film, 8mm. I'm pretty nervous about sending it off to be converted but there's no place that can do it locally. Can you recommend a reliable service?

scanner with document feeder, b/w images encoded as GIF or PNG or equiv.

I need to scan a bunch of documents that are mostly simple black/white or grayscale text, lines, etc. I'm probably going to just buy a sheet-fed scanner, and I'd like recommendations for that. I'm hoping for a solution that will automatically generate PDFs with the included scanned images encoded as GIFs or PNGs or similar, since they will mostly be black/white or grayscale, which compresses much more cleanly with these formats. How to store CD and cassette tape inserts, attractively

Storing paper/cardboard inserts from cassettes and CDs -- is this a solved problem? I'm going to have ~100 cassette inserts and 200-300 CD inserts. I'm wondering if there's some kind of pockety book thing that will make it easy to refer to these in the future and to enjoy looking at them casually/nostalgically. [more inside]

Help me pick a large(r) format flatbed scanner

I'm planning to buy a new flatbed scanner, and the decision about which one to get is going to hinge on some fairly picky details that don't usually show up in "consumer"-level reviews. If you have hands-on experience with flatbed scanners with larger-than-8.5"x11" scanbeds, preferably models that are still available at retail, can you help? [more inside]
