I live somewhere without delivery of decent newspapers e.g. nytimes. How good are the iPad versions of various newspapers: are they delivered electronically on time, do they have all/most of the content of the paper (i.e. color photos) edition, etc.? Bonus: do the major newspapers have decent Android versions?

Primer on digital video codecs, containers, etc. While working with video on my Linux PCs, I am often confused because I just don't know much about all the different video formats (MPEG 4, h.264) "containers" (OGG, AVI) the different kinds of compression, how the audio and video stay in sync, what various terms like "muxing" mean, and so forth. I'm looking for a good document that explains all these things to someone with little knowledge of it. A web document, book, Wikipedia article, etc. would be good. I just don't know where to start to see how these things fit together. Thanks.

I'm trying to find a way to hack/mod the Symon Netbrites. I can pick up one or two locally, from what I've read they need a server and expensive software. But here http://www2.symon.com/general/NetBrite-Brochure.pdf They have serial ports, any ideas how to go about breaking them?

Does anybody (in the top-tier creative-professional/digital artist) really use Flash anymore? I'm talking about the timeline-based-vector-animation-only side of Flash - not the ActionScript side. I'm teaching a (somewhat condensed/potentially fast-paced) class in media production - is it really worth it for the students to learn the vector-animation if it's really no longer something widely used in the creative industry (esp. when there are much better options)? What is the best way to get music on iTunes and Amazon? CDBaby offers this as a service, as does ReverbNation and WATunes. Would you recommend one service over another and why?
I have a digital kitchen scale on which the LCD has crapped out. By pressing on different parts of the ribbon cable connecting the LCD to the circuit board, I've determined that there are multiple shorts or shoddy connections on the cable. There doesn't seem to be an easy way to fix it, so I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas for ways I can repurpose it for a fun electronics project. I have some basic electronics knowledge and soldering experience.
Metafilter designers, codebreakers - David Johnston, Canada's new Governor General has a coat of arms that incorporates a long string of ones and zeroes, but that does not directly translate as binary. Of course it could simply be that "The wavy band inscribed with zeros and ones represents a flow of information, digital communication and modern media." [more inside]

Are efforts afoot to improve the quality of photos displayed on computer monitors? What, for example, would it take to produce a photo display on a screen that would be essentially indistinguishable from a darkroom print of the same size? Do we need screens with many more, smaller, pixels? Do we need better software? Both?

I do occasional audio recording with GarageBand. I just recently upgraded from a G4 tower to an Intel iMac w/Snow Leopard. I settled for analog audio in through the mic input on the G4 but I think I want to step up to digital input. I have an analog mixer, tube preamps, effects pedals, etc. so I don't need to have them in the audio interface. Midi I/O would also be nice but not necessary. What are my choices in a basic 2-channel Firewire(800)/USB(2.0) audio interface?

About ten years ago, I was given a couple Pentax 35mm film SLR bodies, and some lenses, which I was happy with. Especially the SMC-M 50mm f/1.4 lens, with which I discovered bokeh and existing-light photography. But after a while, I got tired of having to store and process film, since I just put all the pictures into my computer anyway. So I got a *ist DS, since that was compatible with all my lenses. But my favorite prime lens has been turned into a zoom by the reduced sensor size. The closest equivalent I've found is the FA 31mm Limited, but that costs ~$1000 USD, and its not even f1.4, its f1.8. Given this issue, along with the fussiness of getting all the auto-exposure/focus stuff to work the way I want it to, and I'm really missing my film camera bodies. Or is there an alternative? Some online service? Some wonderful workflow? [more inside]

I would like to add video to a scrapbook/photoalbum. What device could best do this, cheaply? I have a Sansa Fuze mp3 player, which is small and can play video, but when turning it on, a reader would have to know how/where to navigate menus to find the videos. Is there anything small, battery powered, and cheap, that when activated, either automatically starts playing the video, or simply presents the reader with a list of videos to choose from?
