I just started working at an digital production agency in Brooklyn, NYC and I want to know what's the best way of sourcing a kickass local freelance Interactive Producer for a big project we're working on?
Other than Jobs postings on Behance and FWA?

I am a neuroscience student and I'd like to get my mentor a print of one of Santiago Ramon y Cajal's famous drawings of a neuron as a going away gift. Unfortunately, I can't find anywhere that sells prints or photos of these drawings online, but I was able to find a book at my university's library that has larger (12" x 24") high quality images of these drawings.
My question: what is the best way to go from book to print? Are there particular scan qualities or types? Particular types of paper/material to print onto? Places (FedEx, architecture firms) to go to? Any advice would be really helpful.

I have good drawing skills (especially pen and ink) but am an amateur artist. I would like to get into working with digital art etc perhaps even to the point as a side job or making a living. The bumps are that I cannot afford to go back to school and am not super tech-savvy (yet). I have basic skills in Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator but that is it. Any ideas on where to go next? (I am so completely ignorant on the field taht I don't know what to call people who do this for a living.) Push come to shove, I could probably take a few classes a year, though after I save some money.

Can you please recommend your favourite Digital Video Camera? Key features: inexpensive, compatible to quickly upload the data to a mac, internal microphone. A friend is planning to record interviews and possibly some classroom activities, not record a feature film. it doesn't need a whole lot of bells and whistles; bonus points if it's small-ish. thank you!

Starting a podcast (spoken word) and suddenly have the opportunity to interview the exact people I really shouldn't be "practicing" on. I'm a radiophile, want decent sound, but have no time to learn the technical side of sound recording before my interviews in a few days. Can I spend a little up front to make decent sound or do I just need to spend more? [more inside]

I live somewhere without delivery of decent newspapers e.g. nytimes. How good are the iPad versions of various newspapers: are they delivered electronically on time, do they have all/most of the content of the paper (i.e. color photos) edition, etc.? Bonus: do the major newspapers have decent Android versions?

I am looking to buy my first digital video camera and would like some recommendations. Preferably something I could use around the office to edit semi-professional looking internal company videos. Hard drive? Flash drive? Budget is $600 or less. THANKS!

Primer on digital video codecs, containers, etc. While working with video on my Linux PCs, I am often confused because I just don't know much about all the different video formats (MPEG 4, h.264) "containers" (OGG, AVI) the different kinds of compression, how the audio and video stay in sync, what various terms like "muxing" mean, and so forth. I'm looking for a good document that explains all these things to someone with little knowledge of it. A web document, book, Wikipedia article, etc. would be good. I just don't know where to start to see how these things fit together. Thanks.

Does anybody (in the top-tier creative-professional/digital artist) really
use Flash anymore? I'm talking about the timeline-based-vector-animation-only side of Flash - not the ActionScript side. I'm teaching a (somewhat condensed/potentially fast-paced) class in media production - is it really worth it for the students to learn the vector-animation if it's really no longer something widely used in the creative industry (esp. when there are much better options)? I have a digital kitchen scale on which the LCD has crapped out. By pressing on different parts of the ribbon cable connecting the LCD to the circuit board, I've determined that there are multiple shorts or shoddy connections on the cable. There doesn't seem to be an easy way to fix it, so I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas for ways I can repurpose it for a fun electronics project. I have some basic electronics knowledge and soldering experience.

Metafilter designers, codebreakers - David Johnston, Canada's new Governor General
has a coat of arms that incorporates a long string of ones and zeroes, but that does not directly translate as binary. Of course it could simply be that "The wavy band inscribed with zeros and ones represents a flow of information, digital communication and modern media." [more inside]

Are efforts afoot to improve the quality of photos displayed on computer monitors? What, for example, would it take to produce a photo display on a screen that would be essentially indistinguishable from a darkroom print of the same size?
Do we need screens with many more, smaller, pixels? Do we need better software? Both?
