I'm heading off to college in a few months and I'm absolutely overwhelmed by the myriad of point-and-shoot cameras on the market. I ran through some pictures (well, actually many pictures) on Flickr to try and get a feel for what I was looking for, but some pictures are naturally more appealing than others and the quality is affected by various factors, so I ruled that method out as an objective option. I'm pretty sure more megapixels isn't always more quality and that there are other factors to account for, such as noise and shutter speed, but I'm at a loss at what really matters in a digital camera. I hope I don't sound completely uninformed, but I've scoured previous topics and while they're very helpful, they're a little outdated. I would really appreciate recommendations on a compact/ultracompact camera that takes pretty pictures! I'm willing to spend up to 300, but hopefully no more than that :) Thoughts? Suggestions? Jeers? :(

Will image stabilization on Digital Cameras stabilize the video recording as well? I have a Canon Elph, which does not have IS. I was looking at the Canon SD700 IS, but only if it worked for recording video too. I have an older Sony TRV-22 handicam that has steadyshot, but I find using the digital elph much more convenient. Great photos, and nice video quality too, except the obvious lack of video stabilization.

I'm completely baffled by Nikon's DSLR strategy and I'd like to understand a few things better: first they create the DX line and seem to indicate that cropped is there to stay, now they go full frame. What should a serious film photographer who wants to go DSLR and already owns a bunch of excellent manual focus Nikon lenses do now? I also find baffling that they're not teling who manufactures their full-frame sensors -- don't potential customers have the right to know who makes the heart of the really expensive camera they may buy? I'm attempting to take video off of my Canon SD200 digital camera (note: not camcorder) and put it onto my Mac PowerBook G4 so I can edit it in iMovie, but I can't figure out how to do it. I've been drooling over the Leica Digilux 2 but it seems to be very expensive for what you get. My girlfriends 23rd b-day is coming up and she has hinted at wanting a digital camera. She is not a professional photographer. She will mostly be using it for photos taken of friends, on trips, in bars, etc. So I'm basically looking for a digital camera that can be used in social situations. I have noticed (and other people have commented that they have seen this too) that when I take pictures with my Nikon D70 I tend to get what seems to be a haze or fuzziness on the pictures. They are still crisp but have a diffused light feeling to them. I have tried several lenses as well as removing my uv filter and nothing seems to help. Has anyone ever seen anything like this? I've moved from a low end digital camera recently to the 1st generation Canon Rebel dSLR. The old camera took AA battery's so there was tons of advice out there on how best to store them so you don't short anything out, and sort them so you know which have been used at a glance. personally i liked using little plastic carriers that held two each - when i used the batteries (but before i re-charged them) i would flip one so the pos/neg ends were opposite (did that make sense?) Anyone have any suggestions of a way to achieve the same with propritary batteries like canon's? To sum up: a) how to carry them w/o worrying about shorting out or knocking around in the camera bag, and b) quick way to know which ones are dead and which are good. Thanks!

But there's a serious lag time between when I press the button and the picture is taken, a half-second or so. That's not bad for portraits and landscape shots, but it's not OK for action shots. I'm considering buying a set of binoculars with built in Digital Camera. The Meade Capture View 1.3 has the features I think I want: Price < c$200; sd card expansion; 8-10 power; cheap & readily available batteries; at 1.3mp, better than vga resolution. i'm also considering the 2mp version. Pentax, Bushnell and Celestron are some other makers.

Anyone who has used these have any thoughts on "must have" or "avoid at all costs" features or manufactures? General recommendation?

I'm helping my mother buy a digital camera for her extended trip to Thailand and have exhausted dpreview.com and the various other review sites. I need real-people recommendations: she wants something with decent resolution (at least 3 mp; I hope for 4 or better); under $300 hopefully; decent battery life (we tried a Nikon Coolpix but the batteries didn't last long enough - the Canon Powershot s50 batteries lasted for 200 shots and lots of flash, but the camera is just out of her price range); compact flash, since I have a number of cards for her, and ease of use. And it has to work with an older iMac with os9. Any ideas?

I have a Fujifilm FinePix 2650 digital camera which, although a great camera, has the crappiest image-access software. Instead when I bought it I just used XP's camera wizard, which worked great. Since I went to XP-SP1 it recognizes the camera as a USB drive, not a camera. Trying to use camera setup wizard gives a "no camera detected." So I can get the images as they're JPEG files, but the auto-naming and features of camera wizard are unavailable. Anyone else have camera-detection problems on XP-SP1? Is there a workaround?

I was thinking of getting into video editing and production. I want to do it on the PC because I can get the equipment cheaper, and I want to do it at minimal cost but professional quality. I am looking at Adobe Premiere for video editing. My biggest question, though, is what camera should I get?
