My 17 year old son wants to be an animation artist. Awesome! He definitely has the ability (both artistically and digitally as he is fluent in more programming languages than I, a computer scientist, am) but we are now arguing about the school. I'm pushing for Cal Arts. He is resistant because my ex-husband, whom he hates, went there. So, I'm looking for schools that are great at digital art and animation. This is not an easy thing to Google, I keep getting Devry. More below... [more inside]
I want to read scholarly work about why doing things with "digital" tools (like word processors or MIDI music keyboards) is experienced differently from doing things with "analog" tools (like typewriters or pianos). [more inside]
Mother-in-law is an accomplished mixed-media artist. She likes to use a camera to document her work. The camera she's using is about to give out. House is computer-free, network-free and definitely free of cell phones. What's an easily-used camera of 2014 that she might actually use? [more inside]
I'm doing a series of digitally printed images on canvas for a show. I've only done this screen printed before, so this time with the digital prints, I'm not sure what to do about signing and numbering them. Is this something I should do? Not? [more inside]
My 4-year-old laptop is dying and I want to replace it with a desktop. What is the least computer I could buy now that would still be upgradeable enough that I could keep it and upgrade it for several years? [more inside]
Technically I live in Parker, CO. Friends and others have started buying my digital art doodles that I print locally on glossy cardstock. I've seen some artists have digital canvas prints but not sure where to go for a reasonable rate as I want quality but don't have a lot of money. I'm not even sure how it is done but have the CMYK files at a good resolution and am ready to go. I would like to try a few and see if I can sell them. Thanks for your time. It is nice for people to like what I draw but I want to give the best quality as it is not yet a living but a hobby.
I am a decent artist but very rusty, have intermediate Photoshop skills but draw quite well on my cheapie SB Pro app on my Kindle. (I even sold prints using just that.) Now, I have a new Wacom and besides the usual adjustment to using a wacom stylus, am finding that all three applications on my Mac have pros and cons (as a beginner with this wacom tablet), with the biggest con being the user myself. Can you recommend any books or links on doing drawings and paintings using the Wacom Bamboo (Splash) besides the applications' websites? Any brushes you favor or have downloaded and so forth? As an aside I note that pics I do in Art Rage at 300 dpi saved as psd don't open on my SB Pro application but this may be a future question.)
Wondering if anyone else who uses the Wacom Intuos5 drawing tablet knows how to deal with this problem. My Intuos3, which I loved, had a big dead space in the middle of the drawing pad because I used a cleaner on it that messed it up. Two new versions had been released since I bought it, so I figured it was time to get the latest and greatest. [more inside]

I have good drawing skills (especially pen and ink) but am an amateur artist. I would like to get into working with digital art etc perhaps even to the point as a side job or making a living. The bumps are that I cannot afford to go back to school and am not super tech-savvy (yet). I have basic skills in Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator but that is it. Any ideas on where to go next? (I am so completely ignorant on the field taht I don't know what to call people who do this for a living.) Push come to shove, I could probably take a few classes a year, though after I save some money.

De-constructing 'code': I am looking for philosophical (from W. Benjamin through to post-structuralism and beyond) examinations of 'code'. That both includes the assumptions contained in the word 'code' and any actual objects or subjects that code is connected to - including, but not limited to: computer programming, cyphers, linguistics, genetics etc. [more inside]
