The organization I work for puts on a couple of large-scale events every year that involve a lot of moving parts. I’m looking for some kind of software/web-based solution to help us manage some of those moving parts, particularly the registration process for vendors (merchandise & food) and possibly also volunteers. Specifics within! [more inside]
I am analysing the IMS QTI (Question Test Interoperability) standard as an option for our activity content for my company. We currently have a very robust and diverse set of learning activity content in our own proprietary schema and would like to evaluate switching to a common standard in order to take advantage of interoperability and having a wider choice of off-the-shelf tools for content creation. I am familiar with QTI and understand the specification but what I don't have is experience using it. From what I can gather, despite being an IMS standard, it seems to be difficult to find case studies or even a big list of adopters. I am looking for anyone who could offer some insight on their experiences with it.
I have a small (about 10x20cm) pencil drawing that I'd like in digital format. But this is not a job for a scanner per se - I think I need some kind of digital artist. What kind of service am I looking for? [more inside]
I have a Marantz PM4001 amplifier and pair of bookshelf speakers that I've not used for months, as my new media center setup does not have analog outputs. Should I buy a digital-to-analog converter (which needs its own power supply), or should I just simplify my whole setup? (E.g. just rely on the TV's built-in speakers.) I have kind of got out of the habit of listening to music and am not sure I need this anymore. [more inside]
I like to travel. I also like to make money. I have always heard about the internet being a great tool these days for doing both. A very long time ago, I made money doing journalism writing for legit media outlets. I don't have a degree, just a natural talent. For the better part of the past decade, I have focused on screenwriting and have even optioned a script but other than that I haven't made any serious traction. What resources exist for doing this remotely and where should I look? What would I need to do get started? I do still have articles from my journalism days that I could provide as samples. I would also be open to other forms of writing/online work if it was easy to pick up on. Thanks!
So, there exists such a thing as professional declutterers and organizers, who'll come to your home or office and help you get your stuff together. My question: is there an analogous gig where someone exclusively helps someone else get their personal email/digital/workflow life together (no other apartment/home organizing involved)? Like, say, getting to Inbox Zero, or at least having a system for how they can handle email without feeling overwhelmed? Or helping them track their work more effectively? (Details/background inside.) [more inside]
My ISP is now telling me if I don't call them about getting an upgrade ASAP, they will "temporarily interrupt my service." I don't want one but think they are going to force me into it. [more inside]
I build up quite a bit of reading in my online skimming, but I want to be able to export all that into some kind of newspapery or magaziney template that I can print out and read in the paper-world. Reading off a screen just isn't doing it for me anymore. [more inside]
My mother is a complete technophobe and I would love to find a digital portrait frame that I can control remotely. [more inside]
Why do press photographers at press conferences leave their film advance click sound on their digital cameras turned on? No one is using film these days but all you hear sometimes is click click click.
I'm trying to find a digital painting video, that I've seen previously on YouTube, that involved taking one finished concept art portrait of a man and altering it to create two new, different versions of the concept art. [more inside]
The bottom has basically fallen out of the music journalism market, and I'd like to do my part to keep great longform music writing alive by starting an e-book series where some of those critics and thinkers can do their thing. I have no experience in book publishing, though, and I don't know yet how digital book publishing works, aside from the fact that you can self-publish on Kindle. Help me get my bearings. [more inside]
I want to read scholarly work about why doing things with "digital" tools (like word processors or MIDI music keyboards) is experienced differently from doing things with "analog" tools (like typewriters or pianos). [more inside]

I'd like a watch that I can wear every day to work that looks nice and professional, but it's important to me that I be able to time things. All the watches I find with stopwatches look crummy so I just end up getting $15 digital watches from Target which are fine but I should probably upgrade. I don't want to spend ten thousand dollars or anything. What are my best options? [more inside]

Mother-in-law is an accomplished mixed-media artist. She likes to use a camera to document her work. The camera she's using is about to give out. House is computer-free, network-free and definitely free of cell phones. What's an easily-used camera of 2014 that she might actually use? [more inside]
I'm looking for a solution to create a digital archive, primarily for an architectural practice with an extensive project history. [more inside]
Earlier this year, I started a Meetup group for people across companies who work in my field (Interactive production at creative agencies). I've had 100 people join the Meetup group, but very low turnout (8-10 people) at the actual events. This is a third of the people who RSVP. More frustrating, the same people never come to more than one meetup, except for people I know already/work who are supportive of what I'm trying to build. Even the people who requested the next Meetup's topic don't attend. [more inside]
We just received notice (so far just an automated phone message) that Charter is switching to 100% digital signal on their cable TV system, and as a result we would be required to get a cable box. Now, part of Charter's signal is on analog channels, and part is on digital, and the tuner in our TV can locate them all. Does tis mean that post-conversion all the channels will be beyond the range of the tuner in our recent-vintage LG TV? We have the 3-way bundle with Charter for phone, broadband internet, and cable TV all at their lowest level of service, the TV is called "Basic cable." I understand they are phasing this in, so I'm wondering if someone who already has experienced this could comment on what was the result. [more inside]
Help me search for the way to fix it so that the pattern I hear in Liquid Rhythm gets played on roughly the 'right' drums when I export midi into Addictive Drums. At the moment importing Midi into AD from LR results in stuff played at the right time on unexpected drums. What is fixing this problem called so I can search for a solution? [more inside]

How can I get waterproof offset printing for sheets of labels (not rolls, unless there's a good setup for running those rolls through a b&w laser printer)? My local printer doesn't seem to think they can do it. I can't imagine it being completely unavailable, but don't know where to start looking. [more inside]
Is there an Android app out there that would allow you to touch the screen (either a big icon or the entire screen) that would play back a selected sound file when tapped? The quicker the response time the better. And if it has options for multiple zones (like making a custom-made Simon), even better.
I foolishly lent my digital camera for what was meant to be a short time and is turning into an indefinite period. I need to list some stuff on eBay and Etsy. I would like the cheapest reliable digital camera for this purpose. (I don't have and won't be getting a smartphone (at least not in the immediate "would like to sell things on eBay soon" level of future), so need a stand-alone camera.) [more inside]
It's generally advised to leave as much behind as possible when moving abroad, but my wife's employer is paying to have a decent amount of our household stuff transported from the US to the UK. And why would we want to waste money buying duplicate items if it isn't necessary and we probably won't be staying more than a couple years? So I'm trying to figure out which of our electronics and appliances might be made to work overseas. I am aware of the voltage difference and the line/mains frequency difference between the US and the UK and I'm considering buying one or two good-quality step-down voltage converters for things that aren't universal voltage compatible. But I have some questions that my Google research has not cleared up. [more inside]

As a child, I used to love what I later found out to be called MW DXing - tuning a medium-wave radio carefully to find unusual and far away broadcasts. Has digital radio, and the ability to hear broadcasts from anywhere - both 'official' stations and amateur-run - killed this off? Is there such a thing as digital DXing? [more inside]
I am involved in fighting a local school library that would like to go "all digital," meaning they'd like to stop purchasing physical books and magazines and rely instead entirely on Google and various databases for student research. Not just that, but the plan is eventually to get rid of the remaining books (!), so in the end there'll be nothing but computer workstations remaining. Can you help supply me with arguments why this would be a bad idea? The proponents of the measure claim that digital books offer everything that physical books do . . . only they're better! I can't help being skeptical. [more inside]
What's the best approach to digital music publishing? The only approach I have used thus far is CDBaby, but that requires physical product and UPS codes, right? [more inside]
Hi guys! Okay, so I have a background is advanced art direction & design and I am looking into how to make superawesome interactive digital magazines and booklets that will kick ass and people will love. Do you have experience with this kinda platform stuff? Awesome. I don't. And most people I talk to don't, so I need your feedback and advice pretty please. And if you don't know anything about that, can you give me names of interactive books/magazines you think kick ass (and tell me why you like them) so I can check them out and be dazzled and inspired? Thanks oh, so much. :) [more inside]

In my personal view of photography and life in general, the "convenience" that, for me, is the only advantage that digital cameras have over film (specially if we talk about medium format film), was never something I cared about. However I may have to start caring about it, at least part of the time. The thing is, I have no idea of what camera to get, so I would like some advice. [more inside]

I am looking for a digital camera that is easier to carry around than my DSLR, but a more capable camera than my smartphone. I am looking to spend at most $500. I have a couple ideas, but it's been a long time since I shopped for cameras, and I wanted some more recommendations. [more inside]
Last phone service I had was Comcast voice. I discontinued it and returned the black box that was mounted in the rafters in the basement. Now I want to add an analog POTS line. I ordered it from Verizon, and they say it was activated, but when I plug an old trimline phone into one of my jacks, I get no dial tone. Was there something else I need to do to restore analog phone capability besides just unplug the black box?

I just broke my point and shoot camera and want to replace it with something more modern. I have a 4GB eye-if SD card that I configured to auto-upload to my online photo storage for me, but I'd like to find a camera that has this feature built in. A quick google (an 4 hours later), it doesn't seem like I can find such a camera -- is my google searching rusty, or is the camera market missing "automatic, easy picture upload" as a built in feature? I don't want to use my eye-if anymore. Any suggestions for a camera that does it all?
What are your best workarounds for the lack of a PC sync port on the Canon 6D? And, additionally, I'd love to hear your experiences with the 6D vs the 5D MK III.
I've sent off my family's entire photo collection for scanning and now have 13,000 photos that I would like to tag with names, themes (sports, birthdays, travel), and maybe locations.
