So I have majorly changed the way I have been eating over the past 6 months, and it seems to be working so far. (Yay!) I will be going on an all-inclusive week long vacation in Mexico with a large group of family at the end of January. They love to party and eat, and so do I, but I know that a combination of drinking a lot, eating too many carbs, and staying up late make me super tired, unhappy, and break out. I'm looking for specific strategies to stay on track while I'm at the resort. I intend to enjoy myself, but still not go overboard with the booze, and mostly try to eat well so I don't feel like crap at the end of the week. This is literally the first time in my life I have made significant progress on changing my diet and lifestyle and I don't want to fall back too much. Last time I was at a resort there was lots of food to pick from but most of it was the "standard american diet" with lots of carbs and way too few fresh veggies. I'm an overweight (technically obese) triathlete who was recently put on a calorie-restricted (1200-1400/day), moderately carb-restricted (100-130 g/day) diet by my doctor(s). They also have me front-loading my calories into breakfast and lunch at the expense of dinner. Most people have heard the mantra that wheat bread is "good" but white bread is bad. However, virtually all commercial wheat breads contain added sugars in some form (molasses, etc.) while it is possible to obtain commercial white breads with zero added sugars (e.g. scali or Italian bread) and sugar is meant to be "bad" for us, contributing to cancer, obesity and diabetes. From a scientific or evidence standpoint, how do the relative merits of sugarless white and whole wheat breads stack up assuming one buys the best quality option from each category?

Sis does not want to continue this practice but is concerned the transition to commercial dog food might be hard on the pup. I've done a very strict no carb diet for 3.5 weeks now, and haven't lost any weight, haven't seen any change in clothing fit, never felt particularly terrible (ie never saw a "carb crash"). BF who is eating the same exact diet has visibly shed pounds and looks fantastic. I know women tend to loose weight much slower then men, but this is feeling a little rediculous. My fiance hates lunch, and every day it is a "thing" for him to try to decide what to have for lunch. He doesn't want to have to bother with it any more. He said "I wish there was just some magic pill I could take that would keep me full and be healthy and make me not have to deal with lunch any more". For some reason, probably a combination of sweet tooth and several years of conditioning, I don't feel full after lunch/dinner unless I eat something sweet, ie. a dessert. But I would like to change that, especially after witnessing family members dealing with medical issues which would benefit from a healthier diet and observing the daily negotiation for/extortion of candy in exchange for a few bites of food between a toddler and his mother (not me, thank god). So I'm thinking about starting a new habit, some after-meal routine which would make my brain and stomach know I'm now done with eating, in place of eating a piece of cake or chocolate. [more inside]

My eating disorder started in 2010 when I was living with my alcoholic mum and her abusive boyfriend for a few months to try to get her to leave and start a new life elsewhere. Please anyone with any knowledge or experience in binge eating with junk food please help me. I am a 27 yr old male who has been struggling with binging on fast food and junk for the past 15 years. I am tired of it, but my brain is not. IF that makes any sense. I just crave this trash constantly. I love it, but I hate it. I try to quit everyday. I wake up go running. Try to imagine how sweet my life would be fit and healthy. And by the end of the day I am attacking the vending machine at work or hitting up some fast food. This has truly ruined my life. I have been addicted to painkillers, and trust me these cravings are 10x worse. I quit painkillers, but I cannot quit eating bad. ANybody with any advice please help.

My doctor asked me to try the South Beach Diet to help my pre-diabetes. I'm about to take an antibiotic that makes most people queasy or worse, and I'm wondering what to eat if I start feeling bad. Normally, such as when I get the flu, I stick to the BRAT diet of bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast. I can't eat any of those now without protein with them and only the whole grain versions of rice and toast. And when I'm nauseated things with flavor or fat like meat, stir fry, and salad are really unappealing. I need 3000 to 3500 calories a day to maintain my current (healthy) weight. Currently, I eat like a normal person, plus a full-sized bag of chips. Friday my doctor informed me that I have osteoporosis and am at high risk for spinal fractures. I'm now taking the generic of Fosamax and my doctor has recommended that I supplement my daily diet with 1500 - 1800 mg of calcium and 2000 units of vitamin D3. While I'm not questioning the need for added calcium, I'm worried about the constipating effect it will have. I've tried taking calcium and vitamin supplements in the past (brand names like Centrum and Tums) but quickly gave them up because of problems with constipation. [more inside]
FDA recommends 4700mg of potassium intake per day. That translates to appr. 11 bananas or 5 unpeeled potatos, to pick two common and beloved examples among potassium-richest foods. Various other foods (dairy, nuts/seeds, fruit) also offer up to a few hundred mg per serving. This year I made a resolution for healthier living and have been successful so far. Overcame a lot of bad habits compared to where I started. But I'm going on a cruise with a group of friends next month. From what I've been told it's going to be an around the clock buffet. I'm planning on using the gym but don't know how to deal with all of the food. I'm not going to be on the alcoholic drinks package and figure I can enjoy dinner that way. Breakfast and lunch are a free for all though. Any ideas for what my best options would be so I don't gain 15 by the end of the week.

I've been doing Paleo for five weeks and have been losing weight at an okay rate - about five or six pounds down now. I'm doing about 90/10 which comes out to around two "cheat" meals in my estimation, though the cheats have been mostly pretty tame, some red wine, a few slices of pizza, half a tiny panna cotta. A couple of days ago, I got a CT scan looking for for diverticulitis, and later that day got a phone call telling me I had a positive diagnosis. It's being treated with drugs (I was actually already feeling improved by the time I got the diagnosis). I've just started a new job that doesn't have a microwave (or an oven) in the kitchen, which is a big downer for me as I've always taken leftovers or other easily heated food for work lunches (and there isn't any other heating facilities close by that I can use). The thought of only being able to take cold salads or plain sandwiches for lunch isn't very appealing as I quite enjoy tucking into a spaghetti bolognaise or chicken schnitzel at lunchtime, and with winter approaching here in the southern hemisphere I live off hot, chunky soups during those months. Bonus points if they aren't too expensive or difficult to make in addition to dinner of a night.
