I'm interested in looking more attractive for myself and my partner. In particular, I'd like to improve definition and increase size of my arms, chest and abs. What specific exercises and dietary changes will best achieve this? [more inside]
On doctor's orders, I need to fairly drastically change my diet and activity level on short notice. I've never had to watch or track what I ate. The specific goal is to maintain a healthy blood pressure and I am highly motivated; I've explained why inside. If you've done this, what tools did you use to plan and track your progress? What changes were most important in reducing your blood pressure? [more inside]
Results from my annual show most things A-OK but one red flag -- a fasting blood sugar level of 108 mg/dl, which I read places me in pre-diabetes territory. This hit me like a sledgehammer because I simply cannot figure out how or why I would have this number considering my generally healthy, low-carb diet and decent weight. Some answers would be most welcome. Read on please. [more inside]
My brother is around 30 years old, 6'2", 286 lbs. He doesn't exercise but he's not a weakling. In fact, people who see him think he's less heavy than he really is. Lately his health has deteriorated big time and I think he's in need of an action plan. Help (and please no cynical answers--just kind and helpful ones please)! [more inside]

I apologize for somewhat of a redundant question, but I just went for my annual physical and my doctor told me that I need to shed the fifty extra pounds that I am carrying around. Bloodwork came back normal, but he said that if I don't take off the weight it is going to be a problem moving into the future. [more inside]
In July I was diagnosed with Type II Diabetes. Since then I've made significant changes to my lifestyle. I'm wondering what to expect on my next doctor visit. [more inside]
I've read all the other questions about Metformin, and most about PCOS, but I think this is a slightly new twist, so I hope you can help me. I know YANMD. I have already tried everything I can think of to manage without meds, and I'm wondering if any of you have other suggestions, or if I should just give in and start Metformin. [more inside]
I think we learn best not through rigid reading lists and assignments but when we follow our interests freeform. Yet habits, routines, calorie counting, repetitive exercises, and other finger-wagging components of "health as a necessary chore" seem to be the prevalent attitude in nutrition and physical fitness. How could one get really healthy through the fitness and diet equivalents of reading randomly for pleasure, tinkering, exploring, and problem solving for the joy of it?
I would like to adult better. I need to start doing things like eating healthily, actually going to the dentist, having a home that isn't a pit of filth and junk, going to bed early on a a school night, maybe even getting some exercise and having savings. What resources are good for working on this?
I have asked similar questions in the past, so I apologize if this seems redundant but I am not having any success with shedding the weight. I am roughly fifty pounds overweight and I don't like how I feel or look right now. I can eat very lightly for breakfast and lunch, but at night I tend to eat way too much. Some of this is related to a medication that I take, but I'm unsure how to counter this other than through sheer willpower. [more inside]

It's a new year and there have been a lot of articles about diet, nutrition and exercise around the internet lately. Most seem to be based on hearsay, personal anecdotes or scientific studies of extremely small samples - as do most Google results when I try to search for a current 'scientific consensus' on what a healthy diet and exercise program looks like. Can any one point me towards an evidence backed report that covers these topics and is accessible to a layman?
I'm an overweight (technically obese) triathlete who was recently put on a calorie-restricted (1200-1400/day), moderately carb-restricted (100-130 g/day) diet by my doctor(s). They also have me front-loading my calories into breakfast and lunch at the expense of dinner. It's been hard on me in various ways, physically and psychologically -- my training is suffering, and I really miss being able to share a normal dinner with my partner. I'm also on seriously non-optional medication that makes it hard for me to lose weight and, relatedly, has probably made me insulin-resistant. Help me cope. (Psychological beanplating as well as gory metabolic details for nutrition nerds within.) [more inside]

This year I made a resolution for healthier living and have been successful so far. Overcame a lot of bad habits compared to where I started. But I'm going on a cruise with a group of friends next month. From what I've been told it's going to be an around the clock buffet. I'm planning on using the gym but don't know how to deal with all of the food. I'm not going to be on the alcoholic drinks package and figure I can enjoy dinner that way. Breakfast and lunch are a free for all though. Any ideas for what my best options would be so I don't gain 15 by the end of the week.
iPhone user; I've experimented with exercise logging apps such as MapMyRide+, Cyclemeter and Fitocracy (most of my exercise is cycling-oriented, but I'm also looking at Kinect exercise games and, potentially, weightlifting). Is there a good combo app that logs both exercise and food intake? Or one site that could possibly accept input/imports from both? [more inside]
Mid-twenties male, eating extremely healthily, exercising very well, very happy with his setup here. But very curious why the pounds wouldn't just be falling off now, when they were at a maintenance level when I had the reverse habits as recently as a few months ago. I'm looking for novels where the protagonist loses weight / gets fit. This doesn't need to be the central thing in the book, but while the protagonist saves the world from the zombie apocalypse, finds true love or destroys the ring in the fires of Mordor, can s/he also get in shape? [more inside]

I'm working out, particularly around the torso, and I'm much stronger. My waistline hasn't budged. My weight has barely changed since I started going to the Y and doing 20 minutes of cardio a day plus lifting weights. Loving wife says that's because I'm building muscle, and "muscle weighs twice as much as fat." What's truly going on?

I have about a month to lose 5-10 lbs for an upcoming wedding that requires me to wear a dress that does not fit and cannot be altered. Normally I'd cut back on calories and just go running a lot, but I've been rendered unable to run or elliptical or bike due to an Achilles injury that I don't want to worsen. What dietary things and other workout things can I do during this time to ensure weight loss? In my twenties, no health problems, no dietary restrictions, reeeally need to fit into this god forsaken dress.

What exactly is the Transformation Super Challenge? Chris Krueger has some interesting YouTube videos that claim to have a diet/exercise program that can work for anyone. However, the only way to find out about the program is to shell out $55 via his web site. In searching for any reviews of the program, I noticed that every link seems to go to a web page that he runs/owns. I can't find one single review that is not sponsored by Chris Krueger. Has anyone used this program, or can at least give a thumbnail sketch as to what it entails?
