Too Much Sugar in my blood, but how?

Results from my annual show most things A-OK but one red flag -- a fasting blood sugar level of 108 mg/dl, which I read places me in pre-diabetes territory. This hit me like a sledgehammer because I simply cannot figure out how or why I would have this number considering my generally healthy, low-carb diet and decent weight. Some answers would be most welcome. Read on please. [more inside]

Help me not get diabetes please!

I have a very strong family history of type II diabetes (all 4 of my grandparents, both of my parents, and most of their numerous siblings have been diagnosed, usually in their late 50s). I am in my early 40s and somehow over the past 20 years have been putting pounds (quit smoking and gained some weight, got pregnant and didn't lose all the weight, got a sedentary office job and added a few more pounds . . .). Now I'm at a BMI of 31 and the heaviest I've ever been at middle age, and I REALLY don't want to become diabetic like everyone else in my family. [more inside]

Help me lose five pounds when my lifestyle is already fairly healthy!

I want to lose five pounds. I don't have a specific deadline for this weight loss, but perhaps losing the weight over, say, two months would make me happy. The issue is that tips like "kick the soda habit!" and "cut out bread!" might not work for me, because I already have pretty healthy lifestyle habits! [more inside]

Realistically, is there anything else I can try before Metformin?

I've read all the other questions about Metformin, and most about PCOS, but I think this is a slightly new twist, so I hope you can help me. I know YANMD. I have already tried everything I can think of to manage without meds, and I'm wondering if any of you have other suggestions, or if I should just give in and start Metformin. [more inside]

Nutrition and health aspects of white versus wheat bread

Most people have heard the mantra that wheat bread is "good" but white bread is bad. However, virtually all commercial wheat breads contain added sugars in some form (molasses, etc.) while it is possible to obtain commercial white breads with zero added sugars (e.g. scali or Italian bread) and sugar is meant to be "bad" for us, contributing to cancer, obesity and diabetes. From a scientific or evidence standpoint, how do the relative merits of sugarless white and whole wheat breads stack up assuming one buys the best quality option from each category?

What do you feed a queasy stomach with pre-diabetes?

My doctor asked me to try the South Beach Diet to help my pre-diabetes. I'm about to take an antibiotic that makes most people queasy or worse, and I'm wondering what to eat if I start feeling bad. Normally, such as when I get the flu, I stick to the BRAT diet of bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast. I can't eat any of those now without protein with them and only the whole grain versions of rice and toast. And when I'm nauseated things with flavor or fat like meat, stir fry, and salad are really unappealing. So South beach followers or diabetics/pre-diabetics -- what do you eat when you're feeling sick?

School me, please, for I am ignorant.

I am a nutritional newbie - I never took any classes on the subject, I'm a lifelong selective eater, and what little I know has been memorized, mostly in the last two months. I'm in need of some specific schooling on my current peculiar weight-loss situation. [more inside]

I need clever ideas to help someone with diabetes make better food choices. This person is supposed to be on a low carb diet. Catches: Obviously i can not force them to eat any certain thing. or deprive of food.
