In 1980 Mark Knopfler watched the object of his desire turn and walk away in a roar of dust and diesel. Was that a reference? If so, to what?

I'm currently waiting to purchase a 2002 VW Golf Diesel with 307k miles on it. It has only had one owner, has been professionally maintained, has all maintenance records, and has all highway miles. The owner is asking at least $4k for the car is it a good deal?

How do maintenance costs of TDI cars compare to gas engines? Or hybrids? Shopping for cars and while fuel efficiency is a factor, I need to know the long-term costs as well. What are you experiences with TDIs?

I'm considering purchasing a 2009 VW Jetta TDI with 12k miles. During summer months, the owner used waste oil for fuel. (no separate tank or conversion kit). But we're in the mountains, and it gets brisk even in the summer. Should I walk away altogether? Can I ask a mechanic to specifically check out the fuel injection system? What else should I ask of the mechanic? Thanks.

Making it simple, if possible: Is diesel a cleaner for the environment fuel than unleaded for a car that gets similar gas mileage? Basically, deciding whether to get a hybrid or a diesel car.

I ran my 2000 diesel VW Beetle out of gas. Before taking it to the mechanic, I want to see if I can fix the problem. I'm pretty sure nothing I do will screw it up worse than it already is.

Is $10,500 reasonable for a 2004 Volkswagen Jetta TDI? It's in very good condition and has 135,000 km. He'd be selling it certified and e-tested. The seller is asking $10,500. I countered with $9,500, and he came back with $10,000 not certified. How much does certification usually cost? Would I be wise just to go with what he's asking so everything's done?

How can I get this diesel to start?
I have a 1996 Vandura van with a 6.5L diesel motor.
I stored it all winter...and with a quick jump it started. I drove it around and it did fine, but then right before I got it home it died. Now it won't start.
What am I doing wrong? Do I need to add something to the fuel? The batteries are fine and it cranks, but won't turn over.

I have just watched the Vin Diesel vehicle The Pacifier (don't ask), and in the wrestling scene, one of the students is holding a placard saying John 3:16, which is the verse about God giving his only son as a sacrifice that we might be saved. Does anyone know why? Was the director sending a subliminal message? Is it a common high-school thing being satirised? It just struck me as odd. Thanks.

I'm looking for a diesel that I can cram my kids, dog, girlfriend and friends into. (I posted previously about this.)For some reason I'm now obessed with getting a used Peugeot.
I live near San Francisco. How would I go about finding a Peugeot? (They aren't sold new in the US.) I called a local European car repair shop and asked who sells them used and he said "no one". Not promising. Any ideas?

I would like to purchase a high-mileage / low-emissions vehicle which I can drive (alone) in the carpool lanes around the Bay Area. Hybrids present one option, though I'd rather be in a diesel VW Golf, running biodiesel. I need help figuring out
the requirements listed here to see if a diesel Golf meets them. And does anyone know if filling it with biodiesel changes anything? What other vehicle options are there?

Fuel Filter? Has anybody had long-term experience using North American bio-diesel in a TDI? My dealership is dead-set against it, but my European friends swear by it. (I tend to distrust my VW dealer, but I don't want to be cavalier) Since I live in a moderately cold climate, I would only be using it in summer.
