VW Golf - worth hanging onto or increasing liability?

I'm the proud owner of a 2009 VW Golf (petrol not diesel). I'm the second owner, it has low mileage, has been regularly serviced by certified VW mechanics and has never had any mechanical or electrical problems. It's also a great car and I like it a lot. However, it seems like every second day I see a news story about yet another lawsuit against VW over the diesel fuel emissions scandal. [more inside]

Diesel v. Bamboo (and Environmental Health/Safety)?

My neighbor revealed that within the past couple of days he had killed the clump of bamboo that sits between our yards by pouring "a few gallons" of diesel fuel on the area where the roots were. I was mortified. The neighbor did acknowledge it was illegal. What are the ramifications of pouring oil into soil? [more inside]

Why does diesel cost vary so widely in Los Angeles?

I'm more curious than anything else at this point. I moved to LA in February and since then I've noted that CA Diesel #2 (that's what they call it out here) is *either* about $2.50-$3.00 a gallon *or* about $4.25-$5.00 a gallon. What gives? [more inside]

ShoeFilter: Help me find slip-on sneakers with fixed laces

I love these casual men's Diesel sneakers, which are slip-on but also have fixed shoelaces for appearance sake without the need to tie/untie. Unfortunately, Diesel doesn't make them anymore. Can you help me find similarly styled slip-on sneakers that have fixed laces and are available for purchase?

Diesel fueling problem... what's the right fix?

I have a Golf TDI that I've been fueling just fine for three years. Today, I could not fill it up; diesel kept splashing back as soon as I'd start fueling and the pump would stop. I got about three gallons in by pumping extremely slowly, but that's it. I tried at a pump with the large-size truck nozzle and one with a normal car nozzle. I have an appointment to have it looked at, but I'm not sure what the ideal fix is... [more inside]

Eurodiesels in the US

A while back, I was in Europe for an extended period of time, and there I ended up driving two very similar cars (what may have been a Renault Clio and a Citro├źn C4). They were 5-door manual diesels, and I really enjoyed driving them. What cars like this are sold in the USA?

Deisel and sustainability

I'm will be looking for a car soon. A USED car, as I simply can not afford a new hybrid or anything like that. I have heard of TDI Jettas being as few efficient as Prius's. I am aware that diesel is not so awesome environmentally. But I want to know if it evens out. I'm looking for links to reputable information on the topic. NOT - opinion of hear say. If you know enough to talk my ear off about it then you know where to find the information, then do so and send me a well resourced link to back it up. [more inside]

what should I ask a mechanic to look for before buying an uncoverted diesel car that was powered with waste oil?

I'm considering purchasing a 2009 VW Jetta TDI with 12k miles. During summer months, the owner used waste oil for fuel. (no separate tank or conversion kit). But we're in the mountains, and it gets brisk even in the summer. Should I walk away altogether? Can I ask a mechanic to specifically check out the fuel injection system? What else should I ask of the mechanic? Thanks.

Is $10,500 reasonable for a 2004 Volkswagen Jetta TDI?

Is $10,500 reasonable for a 2004 Volkswagen Jetta TDI? It's in very good condition and has 135,000 km. He'd be selling it certified and e-tested. The seller is asking $10,500. I countered with $9,500, and he came back with $10,000 not certified. How much does certification usually cost? Would I be wise just to go with what he's asking so everything's done?

Why is there a subtle Christian reference in The Pacifier?

I have just watched the Vin Diesel vehicle The Pacifier (don't ask), and in the wrestling scene, one of the students is holding a placard saying John 3:16, which is the verse about God giving his only son as a sacrifice that we might be saved. Does anyone know why? Was the director sending a subliminal message? Is it a common high-school thing being satirised? It just struck me as odd. Thanks.
