Applied too much diatomaceous earth to carpet. Now what?

I am trying to determine the best way to clean up some DE that I applied too liberally to the carpet in my apartment, and I'm trying to decide how I can do so without a.) killing the vacuum and b.) killing my brother's lungs (or my own!). Anxiety inside. [more inside]

Does diatomaceous earth harm lizards?

Mr. Ant and I own a specialty retail shop that is housed in your standard-issue metal building on a concrete pad. We have seasonal problems with bugs, mostly assorted beetles (not roaches, praise be to the small god who manages insect infestations.) We also have skinks that live in the walls.
