Communications madness... I have an email address that it's time to dump. It's from a dialup service that I used, and had kept around for emergency purposes. But I almost never use it anymore, and it's costing me something like $7 a month just to keep that email address. So in making the switch, I'd like to switch to something more portable, not tied to whomever I'm paying for internet access at the moment. [more inside]

I have a Eee PC 701 4G laptop running Xandros Linux. I also have an Apple USB modem, and a Samsung SPH-A580 cellphone with USB connector and unlimited Internet access. Are there any ways for me to connect via dial-up with what I currently have? If not, any other recommendations? [more inside]

I'll be travelling in the US (mostly California) in January, and looking for free (ideally) or very cheap (no contract) nationwide dialup service. I've downloaded Juno (http://www.juno.com) to try it out - though reading the reviews, it doesn't sound promising. Wondering if anyone have any experience with Juno and/or if there are other suggestions out there.

What's a good dialup Internet service for Texas cities? All I need is just basic dialup Internet, as I'm visiting relatives in San Antonio who don't have WiFi or DSL. I looked at Earthlink but they rope you into a $22/mo plan after an introductory period and that sounds pretty steep.

Why is it that whenever I put a dialup profile in Control Panel > Network, Windows sees it as an opportunity to pop up a dialup connection panel whenever (1) I try to connect to a bad domain name or the server isn't responding and (2) I'm already on a DSL connection? This is getting annoying. I have Win2K.

I have a Mac at home running 10.3.9. I would like to plug a telephone line into the modem port and be able to call in to it while I'm on the road using my laptop. I don't need or want access to the files, I don't want or need to see the Tibook's screen, or control the computer at home. I just want dialup access to the internet via my cable modem connection at home, more or less rolling my own ISP. Is this possible? If not with my Mac, what about one of those AirPorts? I heard some of them have modems but some of them don't, anyone else doing anything like this? [more inside]

Webcam software for dialup. Is there a reliable program that can, every 15 minutes, open a dialup connection, FTP a pic, and hang up? We're trying to monitor a livestock pen at a rural property where there is no high speed. I have been trying Spycam but it won't go for more than 3 to 10 hours without generating a system error. I'm using a Logitech Quickcam Chat.

Are there any pay-as-you go dialup internet access companies with no monthly fee? Preferrably with a POP in Charlottetown, PE, Canada, but one for roaming would be fine.

Which nationwide dial-up ISP has the best coverage / most access numbers? I’m heading on a trip across the northern half of America and back through the south, and I need internet access for my laptop. SBC has quite a few. What are some other choices?

I am on a 28.8k dial up. Bleh. However, My modem is a 56K and I used to get 53.3k. One day I just started getting the lower speed. I tried that line check number that U.S. Robotics has, but it is always busy (though, I tried it when we moved in here and it indicated that our line was fine for 56k). I've swapped out the modem. I've changed ISPs. I've tinkered with the modem settings (though I'm no modem expert). Frankly, I've resigned myself to the low connection speed. Now, I'm thinking AxMe... time to take the power back! Any ideas?

Line Speed. . . .I am on a dialup. There are periods of days when my connection speed can be anywhere from 4 to 20 kps.

My local ISP reports no problems during this time, and they are a freenet who are usually very forthcoming about stuff that is going on.

My phone line passes over a couple other houses on the way to the pole. Is it possible that stuff going on in those houses, electronically, could cause some interference? Are there any other physical or electronic factors that would slow my connection down (usually it stays between 50 and 52 kps) between my computer and the ISP?

I need a recommendation for an ISP for when I travel around the USA and Canada. I currently pay MSN $21.95 a month and it includes a nifty dialer application that automatically finds the nearest local access number. I only travel a few months of the year ahd often at the spur of the moment so I keep the account active but rarely used. Is there a better/cheaper way for dialup when traveling?
