Why does fullscreen make old programs look funny on my Windows 7 computer?

When I run some programs in full screen under Windows 7, they either crash or have odd colour effects. When I run Diablo 1 on Windows 7, some of the colours in the game are replaced by bright, flourescent oranges and greens and cyans and the like- and not in any apparent order, just big jumbles of them. The same thing happens when I play Alone in the Dark under DOSBox, though only at full screen- when I play at the default window size, the colors look fine. FCE Ultra, the NES emulator, simply crashes, which it didn't in XP. Messing about with compatibility settings doesn't seem to fix it. The really fucked thing is that when I take screen shots, everything looks proper and normal.

I'm on a Dell Inspiron 1545- 1366x768 screen, dual-core 2.0GHz processor, 3GB RAM.

Diablo Satire?

There was a flash game entitled Diablo III that circulated the internet five or so years ago, that was a parody of the Diablo series. The game basically consisted of clicking on a box as rapidly as possible. However, I can't find it anymore. Do you know where it lives?

Honest to blog, I need it.

Is the screenplay for Diablo Cody's "Juno" online anywhere (other than the official Fox Searchlight site)? When "Juno" was just "the little movie that could", the screenplay was online on the Fox Searchlight website (previously discussed on MeFi in this thread). But now it's gone, probably taken down to keep it exclusive so they could sell more copies of it. Okay, fine. But I was gonna use a couple scenes for a class this week, and I don't have time to wait for the bound version to come in the mail-- so anyone know where I can find it online? (Or anyone have a saved copy they'd shoot me, mefi-mail-stylez?)

PS, I'm gonna buy this script at some point so I'm not stealing precious bucks from the mouths of the artist & studio, just borrowing.

Thanks.

Where to Buy Chinese Yo-Yo String in LA?

Where can I find the string for a Chinese Yo-Yo (or Diablo) in LA, preferably somewhere around Westwood or Van Nuys? I have some yo-yos that are stick-less and string-less at the moment. Unfortunately, it's getting harder and harder for me to find a set to match the traditional kind with the influx of the newfangled diablos that displease me for no reason other than I think they're kinda silly-looking.

Where can I get a traditional set with the wooden sticks and white string before Saturday? (read: ordering online is not an option.)

Bonus points for close to/in Westwood or Van Nuys. :)

What is harrogatha?

What, or where, is harrogatha? A few months ago, my wife posted on her a blog an article that appeared in the September issue of Vogue. It's about Ashley Javier, an exclusive New York hair stylist, whose penthouse shop is in a "rough part of Manhattan":

When he arrived on Twenty-eighth Street, “This place was harrogatha! Harrogatha!”

Neither one of us knows the word, and my wife included in her blog entry a request for a definition. No one has come forward, and I'm beginning to go crazy.

A Google search brings up only my wife's blog reference and what looks like a Hungarian chat room about the game Diablo II. Somehow I don't think Javier the celebrity hair stylist plays first-person shooters. Also, none of the translation software I apply to the chat room seems to recognize harrogatha.

Google also brings up Harrogate, a rather pleasant town in England. Could this be what Javier means? But it seems he's implying that the neighborhood was rough, dirty, messy, awful...I don't think Harrogate applies.

This has become a minor obsession. Obviously the editors at Vogue let the word through, so they at least think it's a real word. I've tried variations in spelling, to no avail.

Anyone know what harrogatha is? Or does anyone know Ashley Javier (offices at 28th and 5th) and they could just ask him?

You can't hide forever, Baal!

So I have a scratched CD with a few corrupt files, and access to the files that I need on another PC...can I combine these somehow to create a working CD or image with which to install/use my program? The program is Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction (the expansion). Yeah, I'm a nerd. Anyway, the original game installs fine, and I own a perfectly legal copy of the expansion, but the disc is scratched to hell, so the install hangs trying to copy two files (d2exp.mpq and d2xtalk, if it matters). These won't copy to the desktop, either, so I assume they're just gone. I can hop on an ancient PC that lives in the closet and pull these files off via thumb drive, however, so I have access to good copies of the files that are corrupted.

The installer, unfortunately, insists on copying over whatever's in the directory, so just tossing those files into the install directory before the installer starts trying to copy doesn't work, it still tries to copy the files and hangs. Worse yet, copying the files into the directory makes the launcher think the expansion is already installed, so it won't let me try to install over/install the rest. Long story short, I think I need to somehow replace the files on the CD with the good versions. I can get all of the other files off of the CD by copy/paste, but taking an image of the whole CD fails because of those bad files.

Is there some way for me to successfully create an image with all working files that should work? I'd really like not to have to go out and buy a new expansion, and torrenting it is pretty much out of the question due to bandwidth issues. Any help is greatly appreciated!

How do I get external connections to my LAN games?

I have two computers in my house, connected via a router to broadband. I play Diablo II with my partner on the two computers across the LAN.

Now, how can I get my friend to connect to the same game via the internet so three (or more) of us can play? I'm fairly sure this is possible, but don't know how to get it happening.

Wi-fi, neighbors, gaming, oh my!

Wi-fi, neighbors, gaming: woe! Help me make this workable! Here's the layout: wife and I are in an apartment with two computers, and next door are our friendly neighbors with whom we are trying to share our wifi to save on cable-modem bills.

We're all gamers. Wife and I play a lot of World of Warcraft, neighbors play a lot of Diablo II, mostly via Battle.net. The neighbors, however, have been having nasty lag and dropped connections a lot the last few days, and I've been experiencing some pretty nasty drops and lag spikes in World of Warcraft. Anecdotal evidence suggests that these are happening at the same time when we're all playing our respective games, but don't happen solely when we're all at it -- it also occurs when only one or the other is having a go.

The wife is not seeing the problem on our non-wifi tower, though, and when I plugged into ethernet yesterday I saw the problems go away as well.

So what gives? Distance from the wireless router (currently a linksys WRT54G, previously a D-Link DI-624, switching hardware didn't seem to help any) is about 30-40 feet max for the neighbors, and about 10 feet for my own laptop. There are a couple of plaster walls between our router and the neighbors.

That I'm getting the awful lag spikes on my laptop while the ethernet-connected desktop is fine (and these lag spikes affect the whole laptop, btw, not just WoW specifically -- bandwidth falls to a sloooooow crawl on web page loads during these episodes, for example) suggests that the problem is wifi-wide and not just a distance/neighbor issue.

Is the gaming causing the problem? Are there some configurational details I need to account for? Are the inevitable packet drops just doomed to equal unplayable network games?

SOMEBODY PLEASE THINK OF THE PWNAGE!
