My diabetic cat is compulsively walking in circles. What should I do?

My cat has been walking in counterclockwise circles pretty much constantly for an hour and a half. He seems a little agitated but basically okay, not shaking or crying or hyperventilating or anything like that. An hour ago he ate his normal dinner, circling between bites. From time to time he lies down, but even lying down he keeps looking over his shoulder to the left, then after a minute or so he rolls over (always in the same direction) and resumes circling. This kitty is 9 1/2 years old and was diagnosed with diabetes about a year and a half ago; I give him insulin shots twice daily. I thought this circling business might be hypoglycemia and mixed some syrup in with his food, but it doesn't seem to have helped much if at all. Google suggests everything from vestibular disease to an abscessed tooth to a stroke. What's going on? What should I do? Can I wait until my vet reopens at 8:00 tomorrow morning, or should I try to find an all-night animal hospital? [more inside]

Give Fudge To A Diabetic?

My mother in law has traditionally made and taken big bags of fudge to her friends and family for the holidays. I was startled to learn that she continues to take gallon-sized bags of fudge to a family friend who is a diabetic. My husband sees nothing wrong with this. It shocked me that anyone would do that. Is it just me, am I over-reacting? [more inside]

Think John Kelly Chocolates but without the sugar.

I *love* buying chocolates or candy for friends and family on special occasions. It's kind of my thing, and the fancier the better. The problem is I have a diabetic in the family, and I want to send them something to celebrate an anniversary. Is there such a thing as fancy sugar-free chocolate or candy? I need something nicer than a bag of sugar-free Lifesavers.

Nutritionist home visit on a budget?

I'd like to hire a nutritionist or a student nutritionist (there is a nearby college that offers degrees in Nutrition Science) to visit my mother a few times a week to create meal plans and give instruction. Is this (a) insanely expensive, (b) legal, considering a student would not have any legal standing to give health advice? [more inside]

What are your favorite freezer-friendly recipes? Caveat: I'm diabetic and don't eat grains or legumes. Why does hypoglycemic sweat stink so bad?

I am a type 1 [insulin-dependent] diabetic, and sometimes at night, when I haven't eaten enough to cover the insulin I took that evening, I 'bottom out': my blood sugar goes down very low and I wake up bathed in sweat and must go searching for orange juice. My question is about this: The nighttime sweat from low blood sugar just... stinks. It is powerfully rank sweat, as though I had not washed in many days. My partner agreed, he has noticed that it is different from any other sweat I sweat. "You NEVER smell like that any other time. It's a low blood sugar thing." Yet only at night! I also become clothes-soakingly sweaty if low blood sugar happens during the day, BUT it seems 'normal', the same as when I exercise. Can anyone tell me why this might be? Why is the night-time hypoglycemic sweat so incredibly smelly? [more inside]
