Does Pterocarpus marsupium work?

I recently heard that Pterocarpus marsupium extract can be beneficial for those of us with high blood sugar. Have you tried it yourself? Has it been helpful? Have you seen results? Any side effects?

Why does hypoglycemic sweat stink so bad?

I am a type 1 [insulin-dependent] diabetic, and sometimes at night, when I haven't eaten enough to cover the insulin I took that evening, I 'bottom out': my blood sugar goes down very low and I wake up bathed in sweat and must go searching for orange juice. My question is about this: The nighttime sweat from low blood sugar just... stinks. It is powerfully rank sweat, as though I had not washed in many days. My partner agreed, he has noticed that it is different from any other sweat I sweat. "You NEVER smell like that any other time. It's a low blood sugar thing." Yet only at night! I also become clothes-soakingly sweaty if low blood sugar happens during the day, BUT it seems 'normal', the same as when I exercise. Can anyone tell me why this might be? Why is the night-time hypoglycemic sweat so incredibly smelly? [more inside]

Should a person with diabetes have to hide their illness out of politeness?

Calling all diabetics: when out in public, like in restaurants for instance, do you inject your insulin/test blood sugar out in the open, or do you go to the rest room to do this? And if you do it out in the open, has anyone ever made a negative comment about it, and if so, how did/do you respond? [more inside]

Diabetic cat question

My diabetic cat has an off-again-on-again pancreas, so his insulin needs vary. I asked my vet about home monitoring using a glucometer. The vet said no one she knows who's tried it with a cat has succeeded. I tried it following this excellent video and found it was a piece of cake. Now we adjust his insulin based on twice-a-day readings, just as humans do (three times a day). I'm considering offering free home-monitoring training to owners of diabetic pets in my community who might benefit from home testing, as a public service. Do you think this would be useful?

Might Metafilter Mitigate My Metformin Misery?

So there is this lovely drug called Metformin that I take to help control the ole blood sugar and it works a treat. However, it seems to be leaving me with a constant low grade stomach ache and very very frequent Diarrhea. My Doctor and I have experimented with lowering the dose but it does not seem to make much difference. This is a known side-effect of the drug, but I am reluctant to start changing things and risking introduction of new side-effects or lose some of the effectiveness of my current cocktail since it does a good job of keeping the numbers where they should be.

Has anyone out there experienced this issue and found a way to help minimize the side effect? (besides taking it with food, which I do)

How to handle a costly, weak-bladdered dog?

Our six-year-old diabetic maltese is getting progressively more difficult to care for. He has frequent accidents on our and our two young daughters' beds; he needs regular insulin injections every 12 hours; and the cost between insulin, allergy shots, and a host of pills is challenging. How can we make things easier on ourselves without making him suffer? (As in, not crate him 24/7.)

Are You Happy with Your Insulin Pump?

I am a 60 year old male who has had type 1 diabetes for 54 years. I have taken insulin injections every day since being diagnosed. For the last 30 years, I have taken 2-4 shots daily. Since the needles are now so thin and sharp, I don't feel pain with the injections, but it is such a nuisance to always have insulin and syringes with me and sometimes to have to find a place to inject. I am still fairly active (knock, knock) and am considering an insulin pump. Will you kindly tell me your experiences, good or bad, with your pump? Thanks!

Risks of T1 Diabetes and pregnancy

As a Type I diabetic, the two risks of 1) passing the genes for diabetes through the population and to your child at a 100% greater risk than in the general population and 2) pregnancy-induced retinopathy (which could eventually lead to blindness) make me seriously doubt whether pregnancy is a viable option. How did other people think about these issues, and what made the difference in making this choice? [more inside]
