How can I apply for a different position internally?

I work in web development at my day job. Traditionally, I have done a combination of back-end and front-end work, leaning more toward front-end work, but I have a CS/math background, so I have gotten quite good at JavaScript and building interactive clients. Now I feel like I've hit a wall where I need to move down the stack in order to be happy at work. [more inside]

Master program in Multimedia/video production

Has anyone completed a master degree in multimedia? This would be a production degree, not research or theoretical. I work instructional design and support in a elearning group through a major university and have a chance to get tuition at very low cost. I am just not sure if gong through the program will make a difference in obtaining better positions later. I am in my early 40's and transferred to this position/industry after moving around in IT for about 10 years. [more inside]

Help me learn how to collaborate with programmers!

Hi everyone, I will soon be working on a project that involves the development of a web platform and will be hiring part-time engineers. I would like to know enough about programming and web development to be able to collaborate with them and understand the language, and have realistic expectations of when things get built. So I am not looking to learn how to program (I wish I had time for that), but rather have a basic understanding of how the system works and fits together (front-end, back-end, etc.) Anyone know of any good online resources- online courses, websites, etc. for this type of knowledge? I've checked out Code Academy and Khan Academy, but both seem heavily focused on helping you learn how to write code vs. understanding the system abstractly and holistically. But I may have missed something. Thanks in advance for your help!

Is there anywhere decent to look for freelance web work?

I'm a frontend web developer with quite a long resume. I work full-time but I'd like to pick up some freelance, remote work in my spare time. I'm wondering if there are any places to look besides my personal network, Craigslist, and those awful "Rent-a-coder" sites where you get underbid by overseas folks who'll do it for $9/hr. What are the best web development companies to work for in Toronto?

I'm a front-end web developer (HTML, CSS, jQuery) just starting out. I have a good portfolio from doing work for friends and a few businesses. I'm self-taught and therefore lacking some of the confidence that comes with the feedback you get in a structured learning environment or working tightly with other developers. I want to get in with a web development company/agency that has a great work environment. What would you say are the best web dev companies in Toronto in terms of great work/life balance, great (bright, comfortable) office space, and mentorship/on-going learning opportunities? (Opportunities to work abroad with the company would also be welcome!). Thanks for the info!

How to create HTML/CSS ordered lists for Sections of a document?

I am looking for a method of displaying a list item's parent number in a list with nested sublists, in the way sections of a document would be displayed. Example:
...
8. Defining Custom Counter Styles: the ‘@counter-style’ rule
8.1. Counter algorithms: the ‘type’ descriptor
8.1.1. repeating
8.1.2. numeric
...
I'd like to use only the ol and li tags and CSS styling, but HTML lists will only display the number of the current node. Thoughts? [more inside]

Tool for building a reference guide website or document generator?

Is there a word for these types of web-based tools, and a widely-used way to make them? One: a way make a web-based reference guide / glossary / help centre. Two: a tool that will generate a custom 20-page PDF based on complex user inputs, complete with table of contents. Are there open-source, well-supported solutions for building these things? Maybe a way to combine some plugins for Drupal or Wordpress? I really have no idea how to tackle this. [more inside]

Is There a Replacement for FrontPage's old "Navigation View"?

When I was in college, and first learning to build websites, I began by using Microsoft FrontPage. It definately had it's shortcomings and I'm glad it has been retired. I've long since moved on to better tools and methods myself, but there's one feature I did enjoy called "Navigation View". This was a way to view your site as a tree-map, but it was also a way to build out a large and somewhat complex web of pages. I found it to be a useful outlining tool, for later building complex sites. Is there anything like that now? For those of you who might not be familiar with the feature, try a google image search for frontpage navigation view I tried looking on another forum for an answer, but the conversation there was not helpful to me at all.

I need to learn the basics of APIs

I'm a web developer who is very capable with HTML and CSS, but that's about it. I am fairly comfortable with SQL, but now I need to learn to develop an API. I'd like to read a good book on the subject. Is there such a book? All I can find are things that explain why an API is useful, or things that assume you already know what you're doing in order to build/use an API.

What can I use to make my website?

Network guy dipping toes into web development. I want to create a "simple" site. The site would have members enter text and create tags for that text. The user would then generate "reports" based on the tags into templates. The data entered and reports generated would only we viewable by the user that entered it. I guess it would be a multi-user web based Cyrstal reports type of thing. What is the right tool for the job? It would be nice if I could use a pre-build enviroment like a CMS (Drupal, Joomla) as I have access to training and web host offer simple installers. I am savvy with Linux and would prefer free software.

What is the best solution for developing an online community site in PHP?

I have tried Elgg and BuddyPress, but those solutions just don't seem to work very well, mostly because of issues with the templates. I want to develop an online community that is based around my online radio station. The community should have forums, chat, galleries, user search, comments, walls, and all the other basic stuff that comes with an online community. It needs to be completely graphically customisable I'm looking for the best solution that is under $600, but preferable free.

Is allowing users to submit ads going to be a problem?

[Web dev filter] I work for a small parenting publication that uses advertising on the website. My boss wants me to create an online system where a user can upload an image, choose from a number of different options (length of time the ad will stay up, number of pages on the site it will appear on, etc), then check out using PayPal. How do you actually make money off of web-based software?

I'm a web developer with enough proven abilities to develop good stuff that end users like. I'm employed, but want to start a business with a couple of friends with complementary skill sets in the technical side of things. We'd like to create one or more web-based products used by small-to-mid-size businesses and/or individual consumers, paid for on a monthly basis using a "software as a service" model. We've got more than enough combined development and graphical/UX design abilities, but we have no solid product ideas that we feel confident enough about to start doing the enormous amount of work involved in any of them. The main problem with any idea we get is this question: how on Earth do you convince anybody to pay you money for the product? [more inside]
