My friend and I are planning a one-way road trip from Denver, CO to Rochester, NY this June. The catch? We would like to complete it in around 7 days. I'm looking for your insight on how to make the most of the cities along our route in a limited amount of time (probably about 5 hours of exploring), suggestions for a better route, or general road trip advice.

I was looking around in a semi-abandoned industrial area in Detroit today when I found an unusual looking piece of infrastructure on the side of the road. It consists of a cabinet with an electric feed, an antenna, and no other obvious openings. There were a couple signs on the cabinet, and something inside was making intermittent motor-type noises. Audio, video, pictures, and a maps link are inside. Please take a look if you think you might be able to figure out what this thing is!

My wife and kids are flying into Detroit for my grandfathers 90th birthday. They have never experienced Michigan in the summertime. I would like to find a nice lake to rent a house / cottage within a few hours of Detroit. We will only have a few days after the party so recommending Traverse or Ludington is probably not going to work without feeling really rushed. Can anyone recommend a lake / area within a few hours of Detroit where my wife can experience the beauty that is Michigan?

I have business in the Bloomfield Hills suburb of Detroit in a couple of weeks. Google Maps gives me two routes from the airport car rental to my destination with roughly the same travel time and a third that appears slightly longer. Which is best in terms of ease of navigation for a solo driving Detroit area newb, safe road conditions (especially if it snows), and likelihood that the travel time is accurate (i.e. not prone to massive unexpected delays)?

Tell me about Detroit real estate and urban policy today.
How are they dealing with the damage, even collapse/abandonment of neighborhoods?
For someone interested in the city, and specifically these distressed areas, how is the City managing them? Creative Zoning? Homesteading? What are the opportunities for an individual? Business needs? How much of the land itself is damaged from past industrial use? Are there programs for (brownfield) rehabilitation?

Is taking a roadtrip through the midwest over a couple weeks during the winter (around the holidays) a horrible idea? Tentative idea is Detroit to Tulsa via a bunch of stops to see things/cities/people. Tentative route - Detroit to Fargo via I-94 (via Chicago, Milwaukee, St Paul), Fargo to Kansas City via I-29 (via S. Dakota, Iowa and Nebraska) and then down to Tulsa.

St. Louis, Missouri lost over half its population from 1950-1990. Since the mid-1990s, 80,000 Bosnian immigrants (coming to represent over 20% of the city's population) have established communities that have saved large areas of housing stock from decay. In which other instances have large, permanent groups of non-migrant, non-domestically employed immigrants been settled
en masse helping to shore-up a city that is losing population but otherwise has the infrastructure to accommodate more? Has there been any debate or discussion about hypothetical proposals to encourage something similar in Detroit?

I'll be attending a Tigers baseball game tonight at Comerica Park in downtown Detroit and I'm sick of drinking crappy beer. Does anyone know if there are any vendors in the park that sell beer with flavor? If so, where are they? I'm looking for something inside the park that I can buy and take back to my seat. Even a Sam Adams will work, pretty much anything but the usual Bud, Miller, or Labatt's.
