My laptop doesn't need Real or WMP to see my Samsung YP-U3

On my laptop running on XP, the Samsung mp3 player YP-U3 is only detected by Real and Windows Media Player. -- But I'm not interested in managing the files with these applications. I would simply like to see the player icon appear in the 'My Computer' window but it doesn't. Why can't my laptop see it the way my desktop sees it (also XP). When I plug the player in my desktop computer, the player icon does appear in the 'My Computer' window and I can easily manage the mp3 files without the help of any sofware.

I can then slide files from my computer to the device or I can slide files from the device to the computer. Quick and easy.

What do I need to do to make the YP-U3 icon appear in 'My Computer' on my laptop?

Thanks!

Music vs. speech detection software?

Music vs. speech detection software? Say you have a recording of a radio show that includes some speech and some music, but you only want to hear the speech. Is there any software that can automatically detect music, and remove it?

Can gunshots be triangulated with sound analysis?

Pinpointing gunshot locations by triangulating sound waves: Would this be technically feasible? Would it be legal? Would it be technically possible, with an array of sound monitoring devices placed on utility poles, to determine the source of loud sounds, such as gunshot reports, by relying on very exact time signatures and possibly volume levels? Would this be super-expensive?

Would it be legal for a city or business to deploy such devices?

How do I work out if a website has given my computer a virus?

Has the Galbaldia Hotel infected my computer with malware? Hi,

I downloaded some music from a videogames music website called the Galbaldia Hotel. I lost the URL for the website so I just googled the website.

According to Google the website has a tendency to infect computers with malware. I was just wondering if there's a way to work out if the parts I visited have malware (all the pages for MP3s from the House of the Dead series)?

Warning from Google:
How to force a MacBook Pro to re-detect video?

How to force a MacBook Pro to re-detect video? When moving my Macbook Pro between my Dell 24" and my LCD TV, I've been having some detection problems. If I unplug the monitor while the computer is still on and plug into my LCDTV (VGA), the screen is blank on both the TV and the and MacBook Pro built-in screen.

The only way I can get it to work is:

* Completely shut down the computer
* Unplug DVI
* Connect to LCD TV (DVI/VGA)
* Boot computer

Is there a keyboard command to redetect video sources (such as the PC FN+F8).... or.... is there a way that I can change my MacBooks video source without rebooting? The old Powerbooks seemed to do this seamlessly.

Can UK TV Licensing authorities actually tell via some special ray gun if you're watching TV or not? Because I suspect they can't. If they're slapping a fine on you, presumably they have to be able to prove it?

Non-bloatware virus detection?

Hasn't anyone written a tiny-footprint antivirus program that monitors changes being made to certain registry and Windows system directories? I sure need one. I'm really loathe to put a resource hog antivirus package on my system (not to mention paying out the nose to some faceless megacorp).

What I really need is a tiny app that can simply monitor unauthorized files going into red-flag locations, such as /<windows>/system32 and registry /Microsoft/Windows/Run, as well as new folders being written, and maybe halt the process until I'm asked for input. Kind of like a firewall for my OS and hard drive. And like a minimal anti-virus suite.

Certainly this will trigger when I install some legitimate software packages, but that's no big deal... it doesn't negate my need to monitor what's getting loaded onto the computer.

Please no AdAware recommendations -- it's a good program and I do use it, but it's not what I'm asking for. It's more of an after-the-fact program and doesn't always find newer malware, even when I see the obvious damage in /winnt/system32 or suspicious new junk installed in /Program Files.</windows>

Find My FinePix!

I have a Fujifilm FinePix 2650 digital camera which, although a great camera, has the crappiest image-access software. Instead when I bought it I just used XP's camera wizard, which worked great. Since I went to XP-SP1 it recognizes the camera as a USB drive, not a camera. Trying to use camera setup wizard gives a "no camera detected." So I can get the images as they're JPEG files, but the auto-naming and features of camera wizard are unavailable. Anyone else have camera-detection problems on XP-SP1? Is there a workaround? For reference: most recently-updated drivers from Fuji, no info to my knowledge from Microsoft's support site, and switching to non-SP Windows isn't an option.
