I'm an experienced product & "UX" designer who just started a new job (yay!) where the focus in the short term is managing design work done by external vendors & studios. I've done some of this before, but always small scale and usually in conjunction with a project manager who handled most of the time and team management stuff. I need your advice, tips, tools, and other lore on ways of managing design projects like these as I'm in a little over my head. [more inside]

I run a podcast network, and we're revamping our merchandise. We have no designers on staff, but we have lots of designers in our audiences who love our shows and have great ideas, and we'd like to tap their expertise. I'd like to ask for design idea submissions from designer-listeners on-air without
asking for spec work (or seeming to). How, specifically, do we make that call to action - what language should we use? (The work, incidentally, is paid.)

I'm doing the ground work in setting up a small side business. This business would target a specific demographic with a defined subset of residential design services. I feel compelled to do a 'rate card' but I wonder if anyone here has experience with using a rate card as a service provider. Trying to figure out pros and cons and whether I've missed something. As a consumer, I think I'd love to see some up-front rates but I know that, realistically, it would keep me from hiring someone if I felt like I couldn't afford them (even if I could). [more inside]

Recently I am sure I saw a script or action that analysed an image file and instead of generating the average colour, looked for a key colour (for example a logo colour) and provided that colour value. For example it might look at this image
and give you the blue or the pink rather than a beige / skin tone average. Does this sound familiar?

Hi, simple question here. My friends and I are designing logos on photoshop. We'd like to put the finished logos on some shirts what we'll probably wear for a marathon. I'd love to hear some recommendations on what reputable online sites you might have used - I found a a decent bunch of choices on google, but can't seem to find reviews so It'd be nice to have some anecdata.

I just want to design and print a poster online. Snapfish, Shutterfly, and Vistaprint don't seem to offer what I thought would be pretty basic design tools. I don't want to make the default photo collage; my idea was to use this
kind of gridded layout, but with rounded corners on all the squares. Some would be replaced by photos, others would be white text on black. Where or how can I do this?

My first grade classroom looks slightly like a (colorful) prison. It is white painted cinder block. It has three big windows with blinds and most of the furniture is kind of dilapidated. There are fluorescent lights. I have a few houseplants and even had a friend build some colorful curtains for the cubbies and cabinets, but I can't seem to kick the institutional feel. It also smells sort of weird. What are some of the make or break elements that make a space feel cozy, homey, livable? Especially for a child-friendly place.

I'm trying to remember a site I once saw offered up as an example of good high information density web design. I think I originally saw it on AskMe but can't find it now - it was a parts catalog (lots of screws and other stuff), white background, green trim, I think the name of the company was a surname starting with M. The primary method of using the site was searching for parts by category, and it had lots of small black and white photos. Any idea what I'm thinking of?

One of my very best friends has a birthday coming up. Over the last year he has thrown himself into game design as a hobby with his eyes on the horizon of possibly pursuing it professionally down the line. My friend is incredibly practical and intelligent so I am not so much interested in a gift that is very "how to" but instead I would love a book that looks at games on a critical level and deconstructs how they craft narrative.
I've seen some questions on the green suggesting guides on a practical level and one a from a couple years ago
of material that was mostly excellent blogs/posts but can anyone think of good gift books that explore ludo narrative in this way?

I'm running Mavericks now, and I'm hesitant to install InDesign CS3, which was my go-to software for creating documents for our small business. I don't need anything nearly as complicated as InDesign. I need to be able to convert to PDF, add shaded boxes for clients to initial alongside text, and possibly add some photos into a document. I'm creating things like price sheets, contracts, forms, etc.
There seem to be a lot of negative reviews about Pages (iWork), but it looks like that's the type of app I need (something simple, easy to learn). Are there any others I should look into?

I came across this website a few weeks ago that was selling a web design/dev tutorial package, among other things. Depending on how much you paid (above or below the average price), you'd get a certain number of lessons from the total package. I also remember part of your payment went to the charity of your choice.
There was a basic intro to HTML/CSS lesson, one on turning a Photoshop design into a web site, and 7-8 more for a total of ~$11. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

My guy and I live in a lovely apartment with a very small bedroom. We're able to fit a queen-sized bed and a dresser, but not much else. One problem we're facing is a lack of space for nightstands. We both would like some space to keep our phones (mostly because of our alarms), reading materials and maaaybe a tiny lamp. I have a small amount of space on my side of the bed and could potentially fit a small tripod-style stand. (any suggestions on where to find one of those are welcome!) He has no space. He has under the bed space. There is also an unused door that always stays shut on his side, so we were thinking possibly of getting some sort of hanging shelf that can be hung on the doorknob. Do those even exist?
Any ideas? Thanks creative hivemind!

1) How do I install the moss?
2) Where do I put it?
3) How do I maintain it? Do I need a clear surface over the moss to contain moisture or can I rely on regular watering/misting?
4) If the moss won't work, are there other low/small similar plants I can substitute with?
