I love stationery and letterpress and prints and graphic design generally and, for fun, I'd love to learn to make my own.
Right now, I spend a lot of my down time oohing and aahing over pretty paper products on Etsy and at Design Sponge. I make my own party invites, cards, gift tags and wrap - but just in a cobbled together kind of way. I'd dearly love to learn to design and print lovely things like this and this and this.
Where should I start? [more inside]

When I build a spot gradient in Indesign or Illustrator I'm not getting exactly what I want. What I want: a very dark blue (say, PMS 2756) to black - with the blue getting darker and darker toward black. What I get on screen and on proof: the blue becoming a lighter gray, then the gray darkening toward black. I assume the solution rests in using a blue > nothing gradient in a layer above a blue > black and messing with overprinting / transparency but I'm unsure how to proceed. Any advice?

In regards to design and press printing. Towards the bottom of this Paper Specs article it touches on an overprint varnishing technique called "dot-on-dot varnishing."
Is anyone familiar with this technique and care to elaborate on how it is accomplished and the effect it has on the final piece? [more inside]

Where do t-shirts come from? I bought a t-shirt from a thirft store with a funny print. It reads "America. Made by Humans." It's a standard baseball style shirt otherwise, but its tag was "American Art Wear." I'm interested in the printing of the t-shirt more than the original manufacturer of the shirt. The manager of the store said something a bit cryptic: that the owner/clothes buyer gets most of the tees off the backs of trucks at trade fairs. Who is in the business of printing t-shirts for this kind of distribution? Who is "American Art Wear"?
