We want to upgrade from Adobe Creative suite 1 to at least CS 3 at our office. We use mostly Illustrator and Photoshop. But the upgrade seems to be more important for Illustrator than photoshop.
-It needs to be relatively cheap to get approved so I am wondering the following:
a) Would it make sense to just upgrade illustrator or would that cause compatibility issues with the older version of photoshop?
b) We need to upgrade on 4 machines? How many upgrades would we need to buy.
c) What are the benefits of CS 4 vs CS 3?
d) Sicne CS4 is out does that mean CS 3 is cheaper?

In Photoshop 5.5 I was able to create an action to resize a layer/selection to a maximum width (say, 200 px). I could quickly select objects of varying initial sizes, run the action, and voila, everything fit neatly in a column. I've had Photoshop CS4 for over a week and can't figure out how to replicate this; my resizing seems to always be happening as a percent of the original size. [more inside]

I'm interested in learning more about design and illustration, and I live in Florida. I thought about attending a conference here in Orlando (so no hotel or travel fees), but being new to this I am not sure about the presenters, and the price tag is hefty (even with my discount code, $395 for three days). So, creative Mefites, tell me what you think! [more inside]

I'm organizing a fitted cap design contest, and I'm trying to find the best and easiest way to make a template for designers to use to submit cap designs, which is harder than t-shirt designs because cap designs must be 3D. Is it possible on Photoshop, Illustrator, Maya, or something else? Please help! [more inside]

Help me impersonate a graphic designer! I know it’s kind of insane, but as early as this afternoon I may receive the proverbial offer (well, assignment) that I can’t refuse, and I’m wondering if anyone might be able to offer some fake-it-till-you-make-it tips for this sort of project (a short catalogue for a half-dozen or so boutique products). See, the thing is, I'm not a designer, although I have some experience with Quark, Illustrator and Photoshop. I’m most interested in a list of ten or fifteen things that you talented designer folks do over and over again that seem impressive to the uninitiated, but that are simpler than they appear to we of the untrained eyes. Books are also fine, but due to the potential immediacy of this, the shorter the tutorial, the better. [more inside]

Tomorrow I'm giving a lecture about color -- specifically, I'm talking to designers about how to create color palettes. The talk is more concerned with aesthetics (i.e. what color combinations are striking) than tools (i.e. how to pick colors in Photoshop). But there will be some tools talk. Since there are many designers here, I'd love to know all your color-related tips. As the Xmas season is coming, I am sharing one of my own tips inside... [more inside]

What Photoshop technique is best for making rough or tattered looking borders like the one in this header or this background? How can I make 3-D organic shapes like these or these or this? As a web design newbie, help me break out of the flat, 1-dimensional, 4-cornered box -- any other good examples of scratchy organic patterns & shapes, and advice on how to achieve them?
