I know that my very question speaks to the fact that I am not quite a seasoned professional as of yet, but how much do professional type artists and letterers charge a client for a poster? [more inside]
My friend has a background in visual art (mainly years of oils, watercolors, some crafts) and has recently started exploring graphic design. So far she's done some projects for friends and family (website design, logos, packaging, card designing, etc). She'd love to do more of this kind of work on a freelance basis, but isn't sure how to find it. Should she advertise on Fiverr, or Elance, or...? How does this work and how do you get started as a freelance graphic designer? Any tips or recommendations would be really appreciated!
I design magazines and newspapers for a living. Sometimes I kinda...hit a rut...and need some inspiration. I was just wondering if anyone knew of any design/communications publications or periodicals that may supply free subscriptions to professional designers? I've got a few mag subscriptions myself, but they can be pretty expensive to keep up with, especially those with really great illustration and design. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!
I don't appear to have the vocabulary for this question, because my Google-fu has failed utterly. I'm interested in vending machines of the 1960s (and maybe early '70s). [more inside]
To be honest, I don't want to do any family/friends crowd-funding. I'm more interested in offering a design/art service--like "your name written in calligraphy" or "an ink drawing of your face"-- for a price that will be donated to charity. But how does one go about such a campaign and what are the best venues for such an endeavor? [more inside]
Middle Class home decoration tropes: I've noticed that even in homes with a very staid and conservative overall "look", that in the bathroom you will frequently find wall-hangings that evoke mild titillation, or demonstrate humorous scatology, or low-brow humor. Is this a real thing, or just overrepresented in the bathrooms I've seen most often (white, Midwestern, Protestant)? Or is it not a thing at all, and just confirmation bias on my part? [more inside]

I thought it would be easier to find this! I am looking for pictures of words. I want to avoid pictures of words created with "fonts" and want to find things that people found in the wild - signs, graffiti, that sort of thing. [more inside]

How can an artist/creative/designer self-promote without sounding like a sleazy car salesman? [more inside]
I'm looking for original self-marketing ideas for a writer and/or a designer. Okay, social media is important: Design your own page, update it frequently and get your friends to like it and promote it to their friends. But I'm looking for those kinds of tips that you've read and thought to yourself "Well that's original!". Something on par with Nine Inch Nails'/H2DA/Radiohead's decision to give their music for free "lest they come to the unique live concert experience" marketing ploy. Have you ever come across a Seth Godin or a Malcolm Gladwell book (or anything else) and was struck by something interesting?
I have some artwork that I want to put on coffee mugs for friends. Though I see a few DIY sites, I am not sure what resin to use to hold up in microwave so would like your recommendations on commercial sites. I may eventually do bulk orders if I decide to sell so if you have any recommendations that would be different for bulk orders, I am game for those suggestions as well. Vistaprint was around $20-25 after all was said and done. Thanks, and enjoy your weekend.
Who represents learning disabled artists? Or how can I find blogs or catalogs that feature learning disabled or developmentally disabled artists working in any media? Europe and South America especially but welcoming feedback about the rest of the world. Thanks!
Usually designers and (to a greater degree, artists) are represented by agents who take care of all the administrative/legislative issues. However, for those who manage their own freelance businesses, it is imperative that they have their own business documents (project questionnaires, proposals, quotations, contracts, invoices, ..). I am interested in mapping out all the needed documents in the process of a project, from the moment the client contacts the designer/artist to the moment the project is submitted and the payments are made. Where can I find some comprehensive/reliable resources for such documents?
I've always had a problem with finding a "signature style". How does an artist / designer (even filmmaker) go about having one? Is it a natural progression from one's interests or preferences, or is it more of a calculated choice? My problem is that I am a chameleon, and my work is very eclectic since I mastered a lot of different styles which makes me virtually unidentifiable. I've always had the project dictate the suitable style, but I realized that this got in the way of finding a unique voice in the midst of a very noisy market. [more inside]

Due to a mix of laziness, depression, social anxiety and loneliness, I'm not doing too great in school. I really need to get it together, and I just don't know how to do it. I feel tapped out at the end of the day and I'm tired of it. I like art, but going to school for it just isn't very fulfilling. I'm thinking I just need to get through it and I'll be okay, but how do I develop the work ethic that my classmates have? [more inside]
I've been asked to put together a longish reading list for a BA Art/Literature module, and I'd love some ideas for texts outside my current knowledge. The list should cover a series of genres and contexts, with writing from, and about, the history and theory of art, journalism, academia, design, architecture and film. Writing on design and architecture are particularly outside my knowledge. What innovative and critically significant writings can you recommend across any of these subject areas? [more inside]

I'm looking for 'Folk' Web Cultures. I am thinking of the recent take-down of Geocities, which seemed to refresh people's love of the naff, kitsch aesthetic it was famous for, as a prime example. What are some other folk cultures still lingering in the dark corners of the web? [more inside]

I have good drawing skills (especially pen and ink) but am an amateur artist. I would like to get into working with digital art etc perhaps even to the point as a side job or making a living. The bumps are that I cannot afford to go back to school and am not super tech-savvy (yet). I have basic skills in Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator but that is it. Any ideas on where to go next? (I am so completely ignorant on the field taht I don't know what to call people who do this for a living.) Push come to shove, I could probably take a few classes a year, though after I save some money.
