I worked in printing directly for nearly 11 years. My last job that had anything to do with the industry ended in 2002. In 2002, the design side was still pretty Mac-centric. How is it today? Have people stayed with OS X and Macs? Or have they gone to PCs? I am asking for a niece who is interested in persuing 2D illustration in her college studies.

What is the name of the design language used for Apple products circa 2000? Jonathan Ive designed the iSub, the Cube, the Apple Displays, etc; all of them share a lot of plexiglas surrounding light-colored plastic (if there is any color). This "look" is cohesive enough to be called a design language, but what specifically is the clear-and-maybe-white motif named? More importantly, where else can it be found?

Who owns the rights if you're a freelance designer/artist, and what is common? A friend asked this question that I am also curious about myself. She was approached to have some of her drawings used for t-shirts -- she does not freelance at all, so is not sure how to go about this (obviously, I don't know either). The person who has asked basically wishes to purchase the art and retain all rights for present and future use. I understand that working out a contract is the best way to determine specific rights, but is there a norm that most graphic designers follow? Where do you draw the line? Is it common to have the client own all the rights to the work purchased? Many thanks in advance.

In June, I am moving into a 1000sf open space place with 14ft high ceilings. I have many large abstract paintings (5 and 6 feet high)... but what about the space above? Anything I can do with it that would maximize my space--for example shelves around the perimeter or...? Any suggestions for things that can go up high and look good and don't require constant access? Links to pix of what other people have done with such high ceilings appreciated.

Where can I find copyright/royalty-free botanical engravings? I'm looking more images like those on the last page of The Grammar of Ornament. Printed catalogues, modern (copyright/royalty-free) books, or antique books that I can scan are fine (I have access to one of the UK's desposit libraries). Online sources would ideally be at a high-resolution suitable for printing, but if they're lo-res, I'd still love to take a look. Like I say, I'm particularly interested in botanical images, but sources of anything decorative and ca. 19th century are very welcome. Sadly, I can't use advertising, text or images of people.

Redesigning an art museum website (content / design / strategy / the whole shebang). What would you expect to see? What would you like to see that they're not doing? What would totally blow your mind? What do you know they'll include that you just don't care about? And, on a slight tangent, best web examples for art museums? Not the content that resonates for you, but rather kind of information and how it was executed. Thanks!
