It's time to paint the living room. Problem: we have light wood floors with dark furnishings and my SO wants to keep the room "light and airy" whereas I would do anything to avoid white or eggshell walls and keep pushing for colors he says are "too dark and claustrophobic". What color scheme can we both agree on to really tie the room together? [more inside]

I have some artwork that I want to put on coffee mugs for friends. Though I see a few DIY sites, I am not sure what resin to use to hold up in microwave so would like your recommendations on commercial sites. I may eventually do bulk orders if I decide to sell so if you have any recommendations that would be different for bulk orders, I am game for those suggestions as well. Vistaprint was around $20-25 after all was said and done.
Thanks, and enjoy your weekend.

I'm designing a logo that will incorporate five letter C's, either with the gaps facing inward (like a flower, like this
) or out (like a star, roughly like this
). The thing is, I know I've seen other examples of each of these shapes before and I want to avoid copying something already trademarked... but I honestly can't remember what they are and am having trouble searching. Can anyone point me to ones you're familiar with?

Assuming a level of graphics competence at "low, but very willing to learn", what's the easiest method of creating inserts for audio cassettes? Level of quality around "punk/hardcore/straight edge" on the sliding scale. Preference slightly skewed to a 4 or 5 panel card, tools available are MS Office products, Photoshop Elements and of course GIMP. Access to printers and copiers, willing to lay out double digits for a tool, click-and-drag type template, or assistance. Thoughts/advice/help?

Not satisfied with the dated icon used for the finder on my Mac, I did a little research and discovered a way to replace the icon using System>Library>CoreServices>Dock>Finder.png. I replaced the default PNG files with an updated version. They were labeled correctly as well (finder.png, firstname.lastname@example.org) but when I inputed the dock restart command in terminal, the space where the icon was supposed to be was totally empty!

Mr. DrGail and I want to devote some of our huge wood deck to a screened-in porch. We've met with a few contractors and the cost is within our price range but there are so many possible variations that we're overwhelmed. So, MeFites who have, have had, or even just know something about screened-in porches, please enlighten us: what are the design features you love, hate, or wish you'd done for your own screened-in porch. All thoughts and suggestions are welcome!
The particulars: We live in the Chicago area so we have cold and snowy winters. The current deck is 20x24, about 3 feet off the ground, has two stairways to the backyard, and is accessed from the family room. The dog crosses the deck to access the backyard for his business as well as generalized squirrel chasing and other mayhem.

What would you call this style of design used on This label of italian candy
I've always loved this look and described it as many different things but I've never known the exact style of lettering/ overall general design term. I usually just describe it as "vintage hand drawn really fancy lettering, old school labels." which is, you know, super professional of me.

For anyone with sewing experience, can you recommend sources for modern clothing patterns and fabrics? For style, think Anthropologie, but the less frippy pieces - simple, easy, drapey. For fabric, I'd like soft, high-quality cottons in a good range of colors. (I never see that kind of thing at fabric stores, so I'm guessing I'll have to order online.) [more inside]

Since I enjoy thumbing through architectural/interior design magazines, I thought a print subscription to one in Spanish would be a fun way to learn. I've encountered the Spanish version of Architectural Living ("Arquitectura Viva"), which seems alright. I'd like to know if there are other options.
