Mitigating static electricity

I live in the mountain west. It's pretty dry here all the time... quadruply so in the winter. I work from home, and constantly shock myself whenever I sit down at my desk. Pretty much year round walking across the carpet and sitting down at my desk will shock me. During the winter merely shifting in my chair will shock me. What the heck can I do to mitigate this? Early side scrolling webcomic in desert setting?

In about 1999, I came across a neat webcomic. It was in a desert/pseudo Egyptian setting and each story would be arranged in a side-scrolling manner, like a roll of papyrus. It was beautiful and extensive enough that I remember needing to read it over many days. It rearranged my thinking about what was possible on the Internet. My Googling skills are failing on this one; does anyone remember its name or (!) have a still-live link to it? [more inside]

identify that book filter: a short, illustrated book with a cowboy.

Ok, I read this book as a kid even though it was not a kid's book. I assume it's a bit obscure. It's a western (I guess?) In that it's set in the desert with a cowboy, but it's not a cowboy book. The story, from what I remember, involves an old, frail but strong cow who has just given birth and her stand-off to death with an old, frail but strong mother wolf or coyote and her cubs in the desert. Southwest US in February -- where to go?

We (my wife and I, that is) are tossing around the idea of a trip somewhere to the Southwest in February, when I get a week off from teaching and we'll need a week off from winter. Ideally with a mix of the outdoorsy and time spent in nice scenic towns with good (vegetarian-friendly) food, on a non-lavish budget. Never been anywhere in that part of the world. Where should we go and what should we see? [more inside]

Car ad featuring woman in car on narrow rock formation

For some time now (read: far longer than I care to admit) I have been trying to trace a car advert that I am sure was on UK TV in the 1980's. Briefly, it was of a car placed impossibly high up on a mountain/rock formation in the desert, somewere similar to Chimney Rock NC, in the car was your ISO blonde tanned glamour girl looking windswept. Living in Las Vegas

I'm moving to Las Vegas for a few years. I have a lot of experience living in tourist towns and dens of vice, but I've never lived in the desert. (I've been more of an ocean person.) Desert garden plant I.D. help, please

This very pretty flowering plant lives in a cultivated desert garden in south-western Arizona; I don't think it is a native plant (although I could be wrong!) but it was purchased in a garden center for planting in the area. Unfortunately, the tag on the plant was lost - can anyone tell me what plant it is? Thanks for any help!

Questions on adopting a dog, with consideration for desert and a baby

My wife and I have talked of adopting a dog for a while. Following the untimely passing of one of our cats, this is more feasible, and could help console us. But we have questions for adopting a dog in our desert climate, and on dogs coming into a family with a baby, and a cat. And we're concerned about being good owners, as our time at home is limited during the week. Also, we're discussing what a good age range for an adoptable dog would be. Details inside. [more inside]
