For the past 6 months, I've been in an on/off battle with my scalp - mostly the crown and a bit towards the back. It itches badly when I break a sweat (I workout daily), and then produces flakes in rough patches. The flakes build up (and re-build) incredibly fast - like overnight, in patches that are thick and dry. I've tried all the OTC products (T-Gel, T-Sal, Nizoral, Dermarest, Tea Tree shampoo, etc) - and they offer some temporary relief - but the flakes, patches, and sweat-itchiness continues. Please help! My left eyelid has been swollen for about a year. Last year I had my first bout of eczema (atopic dermatitis) that hit my left eyelid. I went to the doctor thinking it was an eye infection, and was prescribed a 2% hydrocortisone creme. That seemed to work, but I have been dealing with on-and-off eczema in various spots ever since. However my left eyelid later got infected, and I went to my dermatologist and got some antibiotics which took care of it-- but the swelling never fully went away. It's not active eczema, it's not infected... my dermatologist and opthamologist have no idea and no suggestions. It isn't red or painful or itchy, and I haven't noticed anything that makes it worse or better food-wise. I definitely notice it's swollen, I can feel it when my eye is open. It's also very apparent in the mirror and in photos. Any ideas on what this is or what to do about it? Or even what kind of doctor to see?
My five year old's palms feel rough when they're wet but normal when they're not wet. What gives?
It doesn't seem to be candida, mites, fleas, dry skin, or psychosomatic. I've lived in three different states, changing bedding and soaps as I go but it has followed me over the past year. [more inside]
mrs. mmascolino had a dermatologist apply Cantharidin* to a very stubborn wart that she has right above her heel. The doctor suggested that it would hurt for 4 hours or so and to take some Acetaminophen. She is on her third round of drugs and it is 11+ hours since her dermatologist appointment and foot is still in a decent amount of pain. Is there anything we can do (ice, heat, etc.) that would help in the short term but wouldn't prevent the treatment from working? [more inside]

I've been getting these blotchy raised patches around my mouth for about 6 years. I've shown photos of them to allergists, dermatologists, and specialists, and nobody can tell me what they are, though I've been treated for a host of things that don't quite seem to get rid of the blotches entirely. Today another one showed up and I got a clear photo of it. What is it? [more inside]
I'm 23 years old and I have had rough tiny bumps all over my face for a few years now. They are not really acnes because they do not go away and are skin-colored. I have a good skin care routine, which I cleanse and moisturize daily and I use a Clarisonic about 3 times a week. Nothing seems to help my skin be smooth. I'm not sure if my condition should be seen by a dermatologist or not since it's not really a major problem. Should I go to a dermatologist's office or a cosmetic skin care center that offers chemical peels and microdermabrasions? Here's a picture of how my skin looks.
Hi MeFi, I've asked about skin issues before sometime last year and I still haven't found what it could be. My dermatologist said that I have become immune/resistant to topical treatments (benzyl perox, clindamycin, clindamycin, erythromycin) and that he needed to take a sample and conduct a skin biopsy. On a first whim, he said I likely have 'Folliculitis' but he's not sure since my skin didn't respond to topical treatments. So today he did a skin sample and I'm just curious to what exactly do lab-results show when it comes to skin biopsy. Do they look for certain bacteria or do they get an overall result of what has been in my body as far as food, drugs, liquids go? All I really use 'recreationally' is marijuana through a vaporizer to treat my neck pain but this dermatologist is sorta ultra-conservative and a friend of the family so I'd hate have to explain stupid things to him should they even come up during the test results. TL;dr - Do Skin Biopsy lab results show drug use or just skin bacteria? Thanks everyone!

I had a mole removed and biopsied last week. It came back negative but the dermatologist recommended a surgical excision to remove "the rest of it." I am leaving the U.S. indefinitely... tomorrow. I have a rash I have been dealing with unsuccessfully for the last four months, and need deciding how to proceed. I have good skin, but for the past 15 years I have had a single dime-sized discoloration on my cheek-- a faded red color but not itchy, scaly or raised. I think it is leftover from when I had an irritated dry patch there that I picked at when I was a teen. Anyway I'd like to do something about it, and my husband gave me a gift card to a medi-spa that offers a variety of different kinds of peels, microdermabrasion, etc. I'd like to know what type of treatment is best for helping get rid of this type of spot. Not interested in a long recovery time (a day or two is ok) or having to go back for multiple visits unless absolutely necessary. I'm overwhelmed by the options but would like to use this gift certificate towards a treatment that will minimize this discoloration, without having to consult a dermatologist first. (YANMD) thanks!
I live in a cold, dry climate and have cold, dry hands. I dislike stopping work to apply lotion, because then I have to sit and wait for my hands to dry enough that I don't gunk up my laptop. A trivial problem for sure, but does anyone have any ideas for particular products or methods for moisturizing hands in a way that doesn't make them sticky and lotiony?
My hands and feet are peeling, and I am at a loss for what to try, and my dermatologist can't see me for weeks. Halp! [more inside]
I have never had an allergic reaction before so I don't know what to do. I just had hives that lasted for 2 weeks. I went to the doctor and they gave me some shots and it was gone in a day, but it came back the second week - I kept taking my meds so the hives are mostly gone now. Some spots were still kind of itchy but its mostly just dark marks on my face. I was wondering if anybody knows how to remove these dark spots on my face because I really feel uncomfortable looking at the mirror and seeing myself like I'm looking at a moon. [more inside]

Are there any dermatologist offices open late evenings or weekends in NYC? I'm just busy working till 6 in the city on the weekdays so that's why I'm asking. Either weekends or later in the evening on weekdays. It's mostly for my acne which has gotten out of hand even though I've tried lots of things to get rid of it.
I was wondering if there is any scientific basis to the idea that using moisturizer improves the texture of skin to the point that it prevents aging. My thoughts are that if moisturizer did what it claimed to do, no one would ever need an acid peel or botox. Does spreading emollient on your face actually really do anything apart from line the pockets of cosmetics companies?

A dermatologist confirmed today, based on the results of two biopsies, that I probably have mycosis fungoides (a mild cutaneous lymphoma). It's patch-stage, and he says it's the mildest case he's ever seen, and he's referred me to a specialist. I understand (based on a weekend of nail-biting research and his confirmation of the research) that it's usually not a big deal to have this, but I'd like to hear from people who have experience with it. Can you help narrow down what sort(s) of doctor(s) to see and what to investigate, given these symptoms? All symptoms have cropped up within the last two years.
