Why is there no such thing as urgent care for depression?

My partner is trying to seek medication for increasingly bad depression and can't get in to see anyone anywhere until late next month. Advice, suggestions? Location Madison, WI. We are more than willing to travel, but we'd want it to be for a psychiatrist/psychiatric NP, not another talk therapist. [more inside]

Psychiatrist in Atlanta?

I'm trying to help a friend find a psychiatrist in the Atlanta area (or northern suburbs) who can evaluate and treat his depression. He's hoping to find someone extremely smart, and he'd probably appreciate someone with impressive training credentials. Meds-only or meds-plus-therapy are both options. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Is it a bad idea to submit my psychiatrist visits to my insurance?

I'm seeing a psychiatrist. I'm paying for it up front through my HSA and not submitting it to my insurance company. I switched to a new practice recently and because it's more expensive, I wonder if I should submit these claims to my insurer. Should I be? [more inside]

Having a bit of a mental health crisis, not sure what to do next

Happiness as a choice for the clinically depressed?

I've been constantly told that key to being okay again is to "choose one's happiness" - both by strangers on the internet and the very closest people in my life. I've been diagnosed with mild-to-severe depression and anxiety for three years now (there is a bit more to that, though). Since most of the before-mentioned friends (etc) wanted me to stop taking antidepressants, I am without them for now. So, since everything I found by sending my queries to Google was meant for "normal people" who are "feeling a bit depressed", I would be grateful to know how these approaches apply to those with actual mental health issues, if they do at all. Seeing a psychiatrist for anxiety. How does that work?

Seeing a psychiatrist for anxiety and depression - How does that work? I went to a doctor about my anxiety issues and she gave me a referral to a psychiatrist to get some anti-anxiety meds as she did not feel comfortable prescribing them. (She didn't give me a name, I have to call my insurance to get a list or something I guess. Also, she gave me a no refill xanax prescription after I begged.) I am somewhat bewildered by this as I didn't expect to have to go to a psychiatrist so I have some questions. [more inside]

What is anxiety? How do you know if you have anxiety? Have you personally overcome it?

What is anxiety? How do you know when you're anxious? I’d like to read descriptions of what it feels like to be chronically anxious or hear how you know when you yourself are experiencing higher levels. I’d also like to know how you take care of yourself when it comes up. Have you dealt with it and overcome it? Books or your own descriptions are very welcome. [more inside]

Sustained Motivation: I've searched but come up empty. Please hope me. The general answer to mood-related questions, both here and from therapy, is "keep track of your mood". I can't do that. Non responsive psychiatrist. Am I missing something or should I look elsewhere?

That Boy Needs Therapy

I'm a male in my early twenties who has washed out of college and is looking for a mental health professional of some sort in Northern Virginia. Issues I feel are likely to come up are my (long-ago diagnosed) attention deficit disorder, depression, and some form of OCD - I have a deep and (likely irrational) fear of psychosis and other impairments of cognition. I am deeply wary of psychiatric drugs, and want to work with someone who shares my attitude toward them, but would recommend them as a last resort. So what I'm after is some sort of talk therapy, preferably with a medical doctor (as oppose to "just" a PhD). [more inside]
