I suffer from severe anxiety and PTSD stemming from an abusive childhood. I have frequent panic attacks, flashbacks, and bouts of derealization that are terrifying to me. I'm going to see a psychiatrist soon, and I'd like to know what to expect. Help?

It seems that my psychiatric nurse practitioner, who prescribes my crazy meds, has quit me without notice. The Problem? I take a hefty dose of meds, I'm out, and I don't really want to have to quite cold turkey. An explanation and a few questions under the fold.

When is it reasonable to fire your psychiatrist? Bonus question: If they can't be "fired", what's the therapeutic benefit to being forced to work with a doctor who you find unprofessional and do not trust?

I was supposed to see a psychiatrist today. I waited six weeks to get this appointment, after waiting five long months for my insurance to kick in. When I arrived they told me that my appointment had accidentally been given to someone else, and the soonest they could reschedule was another month. I honestly don't know if I can wait that long. What are my options here, and how can I manage my life in the meantime?

A friend of mine in the Northern Virginia area is in need of a psychiatrist for issues of depression, rage, and maybe some kind of bipolar issue. My friend is in treatment, but is looking for recommendations for psychiatrists. My friend's depression is debilitating enough that it's very hard for my friend to actually seek out recommendations among the local friends and community, so I figured I'd hit up the hive mind.

I need a therapist. I recently moved to the Boston area, I don't really know anybody, and
Psychology Today isn't doing it for me. I know that I'm clinically depressed (runs in the family, and relatives who are docs say so), and it's gotten worse of late. It's ruining my job, my life, and my sleep. Where do I find a top notch psychiatrist/psychologist?
