Fear of Antidepressants

Yesterday a dear friend had a come to Jesus talk with me and encouraged me to make an appointment with my doctor about going on an antidepressant. I have been advised to go on antidepressants in the past by therapists and other doctors, but have never taken the next steps because my family views being on medication as a personal failure/huge dangerous risk. How Do I Antidepressant? Tracking success/side effects of medication

I'm working with a psychiatrist to try antidepressants for anxiety in combination with my ongoing work with a therapist. He's started me on a low dose of Cymbalta and says I may need to try a variety of antidepressants before I find out what works. If you take medications for mood/anxiety, how do you track their effects on you to figure out if something is working or not? [more inside]

Looking for a good discussion group on antidepressant treatments

After several years of treatment, with less than optimal results, my psychiatrist and I have agreed to switch me to a new antidepressant. I'm looking for recommendations for well-moderated discussion groups about depression and antidepressant treatments, where people can share their experiences with side effects, etc. with each other. I just want a place where I can get a sense of what to expect, and what's normal/abnormal, when a take a particular drug.

Can anxiety feel like this?

I find it difficult to articulate the way I've been feeling, but more and more I'm suspecting that things aren't right. Should I take antidepressants?

As far as I can tell, I'm textbook dysthymic with occasional bouts of major depression. I also have generalized anxiety and binge eat. This has been going on since I was a teenager (I'm mid-20s now) and I'm sick of it and starting to wonder if life's too short to feel as generally terrible as I do. Complications are grad school, anxiety, and general terror about taking something that might interfere with my brain. Should I take antidepressants? [more inside]

Blue? Only in color, Michael. Oh, also in mood.

I have self-diagnosed low-level depression and anxiety-- so low-level and constant that I think of it more like my personality than any disorder. Still, the days where it ebbs are pretty awesome. Anti-depressants: alternatives to bupropion (Wellbutrin)?

I'm starting out on anti-depressants. My doctor has prescribed me venlafaxine (Effexor XR), an SNRI. I strongly suspect a dopamine reuptake inhibitor would be better suited for my condition and personality, but sadly, bupropion (Wellbutrin) isn't available as an anti-depressant in my country: only under the name Zyban (as a smoking cessation aid), which is not covered by insurance and hence very expensive. Are there any alternatives I should look into? [more inside]

Tapering off EffexorXR

I've been taking Effexor for at least 5 years. Twice my doctor has tried to wean me off of it, but only horrible side effects happen- I cry, shiver, feel like I'm floating, become irritated, etc. The lowest dose is 37.5 mg. For about a month I was opening it up, dumping about half of the "sand" out, and swallowing the rest like my doctor suggested. I just got worse and worse. Has anyone successfully stopped taking Effexor?
