My daughter is twelve, and she keeps falling behind in school, despite the school giving her tools that should keep her on-track. I think the problem is that she's just like me. My wife had great study habits, so she can't identify with our daughter's struggle. I can empathize, but my teachers, parents, and self couldn't break me, so I don't have any solutions to apply.

After reading
this thread of people describing ADD/ADHD symptoms, and reading the links, and feeling like they were describing my life, I got a really, horrid sinking feeling I might actually be ADD. It's kinda wigging me out and I don't know what to do.

At this point I’m 90% convinced that I have inattentive ADD. I’m going to see an expert soon, and now I’m freaking out thinking that I’m deluding myself and just looking for a cheap excuse for being such a mess. Also, what could I do if it’s really not ADD? I feel like I’ve exhausted my options. Long and snowflakey.

I'm thinking about therapy for the first time, but nothing's specifically
wrong. What type of therapist should I look for, and what can I do in the weeks leading up to it that would help me along the way?

How does someone know if a stimulant medication (adderall) is helping them the way it was intended to for ADD, or if they are searching for a reason to continue a substance that makes them feel good (aka addictive behaviors)?
Where is the line between a "need for functioning" and "it makes me feel better therefore I function better"?
Don't most people function better on a stimulant?

I'm a male in my early twenties who has washed out of college and is looking for a mental health professional of some sort in Northern Virginia. Issues I feel are likely to come up are my (long-ago diagnosed) attention deficit disorder, depression, and some form of OCD - I have a deep and (likely irrational) fear of psychosis and other impairments of cognition. I am deeply wary of psychiatric drugs, and want to work with someone who shares my attitude toward them, but would recommend them as a last resort. So what I'm after is some sort of talk therapy, preferably with a medical doctor (as oppose to "just" a PhD).

I was supposed to see a psychiatrist today. I waited six weeks to get this appointment, after waiting five long months for my insurance to kick in. When I arrived they told me that my appointment had accidentally been given to someone else, and the soonest they could reschedule was another month. I honestly don't know if I can wait that long. What are my options here, and how can I manage my life in the meantime?

I've been undergoing some depressive stuff in my past three years. I've perhaps followed the typical male pattern of trying to gut it out. Over time I've come to the conclusion I need to seek out some assistance. While researching SSRI's I ran across a product that promised relief from ADD symptoms, as well as help with benzo dependence. Loads of testimonials from happy customers, you know the drill.

I know I need therapy, and I intend to get it as soon as my health insurance comes through in a few weeks. I'm under a lot of strain from a pending divorce and various related financial issues. I'm not just depressed, but I have the attention span of a gnat and I get caught in horrible, tormenting chains of obsessive thoughts. This is really crippling my ability to work and bill my customers, leading to more financial stress, leading to more emotional stress, etc. What solid things can I do in the short term to focus, work and get things done without pacing, obsessing and crying a lot?

After a long and difficult struggle and much agonizing, I have decided to leave my (small, elite, liberal arts, etc) school and take the rest of the year off, with the intention of returning next fall for a fresh start. What should I do in the interim to make sure I really succeed the second time around?
