My wife and two boys, 11 and 12 will be staying one day in Denver in the latter part of March and would like suggestions on how to pass the day. We will be spending the night at the Sheraton at 1550 Court Place and will not have a car so walking friendly advice would be appreciated.

Holiday Recommendations for Denver?

Denver filter: My boyfriend and I will be in the Denver area from Dec 25 - Jan 1st.

I would love Holiday/ winter activity recommendations for my boyfriend and I (mid-20s and early 30s) and activity recommendations for us and my parents. I lived in Denver ex-urbs for many years with my family, but we were never around for Christmas / New Year's.

Your favorite Denver area winter time activities would be swell as well. We live in Seattle. Casa Bonita is already on our list.

What are some "good will" alternatives to Christmas in Denver? What's something I can do in or around Denver that will be beneficial for someone less fortunate this Christmas? I'm open to pretty much open to helping with any job or task. I'd prefer something through an organization but ideas for random acts of kindness help as well.

Help me become a teacher without a masters.

Can I teach in Colorado without a Masters? The details are, I live in Denver, I have a bachelors degree in Computer Information Systems, I've been working as a freelance software developer for the last 2+ years, when I say freelance I mean that's how I make a good serious living. I'd like to get into teaching computer science at either a high school or junior college level. Nothing too advanced, but either Intro to Programming, RDMS or Data Structures. I've seen a lot of places require a masters but I'd rather not rack up another student loan burden plus sink all my time into grad school for the next 2 years. I have a great resume, very strong references from high profile clients, I've never had difficulty getting solid, well paying work. I feel I would be good teaching older kids/young adults, I've worked with high school students a few years back and really enjoyed it; Is there a way I can make all this translate into at least some part time teaching job?

Bad connection might leave me stuck in DIA (DEN) for six hours. Help me find alien autopsies and other weirdness. Unless I can change it on the spot, I probably have a bad connection that looks like it will leave me idling in Denver International Airport for six plus hours next week. I've never done anything more than run between gates there before, so I really haven't spent any quality time there.

I know it's too far from the city to be useful for such a short squat, so I'm looking for ways to kill time within the terminals or very close by.

I understand from urban legend that this particular airport is chock-full of crazy-strange alien-masonic new world order conspiracy zombie camp weirdness in its architecture and art. That sounds fun. I have cameras, a sketchbook, and no fear. Where do I begin?

Any more pedestrian attractions (like exemplary food or shops) would also be welcome. One can only take so much Pizza Uno and Hudson's News, you know?

Any tips or pointers?

What to do in Denver for a year? Masters?

What can a mid-career person (me) do for a year in a new city (Denver) that will be productive in the 12 months or so spent there? Are there Master's programs that you can either complete in one year, or spend a year on-site and then finish while living elsewhere? Or is something else a better option? My girlfriend, a 3rd year law student, is doing a clerkship in Denver beginning in Fall 2010. I'd need to leave a great job to spend that year with her, after which we'd move on to a different place for long-term settlement. We'd only be in Denver for the year.

So, what do I do? I have a bachelors, so I am considering applying to a Masters program if I can find the right fit. I'd want the Masters to open up the possibility of teaching college courses at some point, or just to advance my prospects in one field or another. I'm in communications, but very flexible in what I could study or pursue.

Know of any degree programs that would work? Failing that, how do I not make this a wasted year professionally?

Where's the cheap food and drinks in Denver?

What are your favorite cheap eats and drinks in Denver? I'm looking to create a list of cheap places to eat in the Denver area. For example, places with $1 taco night or $2 you-call-its like the Park Tavern on Tuesdays. This has to be near downtown, but I'll anywhere within the area from Evans and Colorado across to the Highlands.

I'd like to get a list of places for every night of the week, if possible.

Or if there's already a website that has this information, I would be interested in that as well.

Hotel recommendations for Capitol Hill in Denver?

Can anyone recommend a decent hotel in Denver, somewhere in or around the Capitol Hill area? Up to maybe +/-$125 a night. Clean, good location to do shopping/sights/etc, but otherwise no major restrictions. My partner and I will be there for a long weekend in December and plan on doing some stuff northwest of Capitol Hill (Buell Theater for Spring Awakening, Denver Art Museum) and southeast of Capitol Hill (Room & Board, Nordstrom). A hotel in any of those areas would be great. I was looking at The Burnsley Hotel on Grant St.--any experiences there? Finally, any recommendations for good stuff for us (two mid-twenties guys) to do in the areas near your recommended hotel? Theater, shops, restaurants--we're pretty open. Thanks in advance.

Moving In Wintertime

My wife and I are moving from NYC to Denver in the middle of January. We'll likely be shipping some stuff and then driving. I've never moved during the winter, so I'm looking for advice from people who have moved through snow or know of any issues getting to Denver around January. Best routes? I've moved often, but it's always been in the summer. We plan on taking things slow - no reason to get into an accident - but I want to be sure there's not some other salient feature that I won't know about until it's actually too late.

I know what I want to do, so if you've advice on how best to do it, please be my guest!
Does anyone in the Denver Metro area (or even better: Aurora) have a recommendation for a house cleaner for bi-weekly cleanings? We prefer not to use Merry or Molly maids, someone who has their own business is preferred. I'm checking out Craigslist and following a few other leads, but personal recommendations would be great. If you can tell me about how much you spend either in this thread or via mefi mail it would be appreciated.
Denver Smarties - the delicious nibble everyone loves!

Where can I find Nestle Smarties in Denver? My folks live in the UK (I live in Denver), and they routinely send/bring back British treats for friends and family. The most requested treat is chocolate Smarties, so much so that people frequently ask me where they could find some locally. I would like to give them a better answer than "Uh... I'm not sure."

I know Cost Plus World Market sells some sweets -- I recall seeing Malteasers there awhile back, so I would assume they would carry Smarties as well.

Are there any other places in the Denver metro area that sell Smarties?

Denver in a Day

Boulder? Denver? Help me day-trip to Colorado *THIS* Saturday! So I snatched up an interesting offer: Frontier Airlines had PHX->DEN same-day roundtrip for $59, inclusive. (No add'tl taxes or fees, available ONLY for this Saturday, and only for an hour, at that!)

We arrive in DEN at 9:24am and we depart at 9:20pm.

We *may* have a ride from the airport, but what's the cheapest way to downtown Denver (or Boulder) if not? Where's best to land if we want to get around the city relatively easily once we do, assuming no car?

What's there to see and do for fun eating on a Saturday? Which would you recommend to make the best use of our time? We probably need to be back at the airport by 8:15 at the latest, so take that into account. (No checked bags, clearly.)

I like photography, museums, good food, fun art, cool people, markets, fairs, weird off-the-beaten path stuff, and anything else going. I'll have my brother in tow, who's also down for pretty much anything.

Help plan my one-day itinerary, and understand that very little is a bust for us; it was a $60 thing, so why not, right?

Thanks!

Where is there an exciting swimming hole/lake/river near Denver? My parents are looking for a good place to see some waterfalls, go swimming, marvel at nature, etc tomorrow, near or in Denver.

Criteria:

1. Swimming possible please (for dad)
2. Something cool to see/do besides swimming, (for mom) this could be waterfalls, flowers, short hiking trail, whatever.
3. Close to Denver, CO (2 hours or less)

The perfect example from back home would be the kankamagus river in New Hampshire.

They've been to RMNP and golden gate canyon, and enjoyed both.
I'm also a visitor here, so I don't know where to send them.

Where can I find out-of-town sports bars in Denver? Hello Hive Mind!
I'm a recent (end of March) transplant from the northeast and with football season coming up, I need some local places to watch out-of-town games with some like-minded crazies (sport masochists? you'll see when I tell you my teams).
I'm looking for:
* NFL - Buffalo Bills. I hear LoDos is a good place for this, is that still the case?
* NCAA Football - Penn State. Google refers me to Pat's, which makes sense since it's a cheesesteak place. Yes?
* NCAA Men's Basketball - Syracuse. There's a post on city-data.com that Blake Street Tavern does this, but can someone corroborate this?

Any other suggestions? I live in North Capital Hill, so if they're close to me even better-- but if I have to drive a bit I am willing to do it.

Where to move in Colorado for a skiing teacher

Moving to Colorado in December. Want to be close to skiing and looking for a job in education. Best location and opportunity? I'll be moving in December after I receive my teaching license in Ohio. I doubt I will get a teaching job right away so I plan on subbing in a school or temping somewhere else until the next school year rolls around. I'm 25 so I wouldn't mind a young part of town but is not a must. I'm thinking the west side of Denver though because it's close to skiing. Other cities I should consider or what parts of Denver should I look in? Thanks!

We're moving out west!

Where can we live (in the US) that has both pleasant summers and awesome snowboarding? My boyfriend and I plan to move in the next year or so, and we’re having lots of fun picking out potential dream cities to live in. My Metafilter searches have turned up some great options and several really helpful threads along similar lines, so I thought I’d throw our requirements into the mix.

My boyfriend’s goal in life is to have easy access to awesome snowboarding, and I’m cool with that as long as I can still have summer - I don’t want to be wading though snowdrifts year-round, and I want sunshine and milder temps for at least a couple months. I also want to be in a decent-sized city - nothing huge (or really expensive), but I like being near restaurants, concerts, art/culture, festivals, shopping, bike trails, and so forth. My boyfriend will be attending grad school down the road, so proximity to a university would be nice.

That’s our wish list. So far, we like Denver, Fort Collins, Seattle, and Portland (and we’re open to more suggestions). We also need some help narrowing our choices so we can plan a trip to visit some of these places, so I’m putting the gist of what we’ve found about each city below, and any comments from people who have actually lived there would be helpful.

Denver - Large city so better job prospects (I‘m a graphic designer), weather similar to where we are now (Wisconsin, which actually seems to have harsher winters). Right by Vail, Breckenridge, et al., so obviously the snowboarding would be great. What’s the downside? Is it expensive to live there? (We’ve already nixed Boulder because it seems pricey.)

Fort Collins - Sunny with mild winters, college town, smaller than Denver so less expensive and less traffic. Further from snowboarding - looks like 3-4 hours to the big resorts - but are there smaller hills nearby? Is it kind of sleepy and suburb-y there?

Seattle / Portland - Both look like awesome cities with great culture - what are the differences in size, cost of living, general feel, etc? Seattle has Mount Ranier and Olympic National Park, and Portland is right by Mount Hood - how does the snowboarding / skiing compare to the big Colorado resorts? I’ve read varying reports of the weather in this area, from “it’s always gray and rainy” to “it’s always gorgeous and mild” - what’s the truth?

Creative temping in Denver

Can anyone recommend a Denver temp agency for "creatives" or for "information professionals"? I want desperately to move to Denver and have been told that no temp agency clients will consider me for long-term assignments unless I'm already there, even though I've told them I expect to pay my own relocation expenses. I'm a writer, editor, and librarian. Because I have these skills I'm not interested in super-low-level receptionist-type assignments. It's hard to Google because of all the junk listings. I guess I'm looking for personal experiences with firms to try or to avoid. (And yes, I'm aware that the economy is blotto, and that this is going to be an uphill battle.)

Need Colorado Info Please

I need advice/info about the best neighborhoods/school districts in Boulder/Denver Co. Hi all, my good friends are making a quick move from GA to the Boulder/Denver, Co area. They have a high schooler and elementary age children. This is happening really fast and they need some advice about where to look to rent for a year. They want a nice area for families and a good school system. They want to buy after they sell here in GA so they need advice on a neighborhood that they can stay in for a while. Any advice about where to look would be appreciated. They have job possibilities in both cities so all info on both areas appreciated. Thanks all!!

Where can I swim in Denver?

Where can I swim in Denver? A 50-meter (Olympic) pool is a must.

Indoor or outdoor, but indoor would probably be better considering how cold it is in autumn, winter, spring.

Membership preferred, unless there's a public facility that isn't overrun with crowds.

I'd love a place where I can reserve a lane (me only, no sharing) for 30- or 60-minute swim. I'm even willing to pay a lot for a low-traffic, more exclusive location.

I like to swim at night, so late hours would great.

No children would be fantastic!

Close to downtown?

Colorado camping (with some criteria)

I need help finding a camping site near Denver. There will be 6-8 people, and we'll be camping Friday and Saturday nights in the middle of July. Where can we find a place with scenery, at least some privacy, and access to swimming? My girlfriend just signed up for a MeFi account, but she can't ask anything for a week. We're cheating. She says:

"I am in charge of making reservations for a group of no more than 8 people who will be congregating mid-July in Denver from all over the country. Because some of them will be driving long distances, I'm looking for camping sites within 2 hours' drive of Denver. Having access to swimming within 10 or 15 minutes' drive (not necessarily at the same campsite) is an absolute must. And, because most of the campers are non-Coloradans, I'm hoping to find a place with scenery to wow the out-of-staters.

However, what I'm finding is a lot of campsites which are near reservoirs or lakes, but which have little, if any, shade and absolutely zero privacy. We don't necessarily want to be in the middle of nowhere, but we go camping to be crazy and isolated together, not to make friends. Surely someone knows of a place in the Denver-ish area with some shade, some seclusion, and some safe water?"

Note: this is car camping. We need to be able to drive to within a hundred yards or so of the campsite. Lame, I know, but nobody wants to hump five cases of beer three miles into the woods. I would. But nobody else wants to.
