My parents both had dentures. I am middle-aged (ouch!). Please talk to me about best practices for dental care, so that I can keep my own teeth for the duration of my life. [more inside]
My mom indicates that for my dad, extractions of his remaining teeth and a full set of dentures would run between $30-40k. Since dentures are not a luxury on par with a Porsche Boxter, something is amiss. Assuming that my folks are not eligible for Medicaid but have Delta Dental insurance, can anyone help me understand within an order of magnitude what they (or I) would spend on upper and lower dentures? Is my mom tripping? Do people routinely shell out tens of thousands for dentures? They're in New York but we're in Ohio (US).
Where can I find cheap dentures? Wholesale rejects, dental school models, or used - any would be fine by me. [more inside]
I've just purchased a set of immediate dentures that look ridiculous and don't fit. I signed my approval for the preliminary wax version- I thought the teeth looked a little small, but my denturist assured me they'd look fine. (It was difficult to tell, holding them up next to my mouth in the mirror.) Friday I had my final real teeth removed, and tried on the denture at the end of the visit. It didn't come close to fitting. My dentist confirmed my suspicions about the size of the denture teeth, and said most denturists actually put the wax version in the patient's mouth to make sure the bite is properly aligned, as well as to make sure they look good. Not mine... Having signed off on the wax version, do I have any legal recourse here? If so, would they have to fix the cosmetic problems (size of teeth) as well as the fit?
A year into recovery from a decade-long meth addiction, the most obvious and lingering effect for me is a horrific case of "meth mouth". I've been told I'll need to have my remaining teeth pulled and replaced with a full set of dentures. Due to my HIV status, I receive basic dental care and denture coverage through a national insurance program; unfortunately, the system-wide policy of the program-affiliated clinics in my city is that once my teeth are removed, I must wait about 6 months for my mouth to heal sufficiently before I'm fitted for dentures. Is there anything I can do to avoid looking drooling pudding for the next half year? [more inside]
Help me figure out next steps with regard to the mess that is my mouth, specifically my teeth [more inside]
I've got a partial upper denture (front 6 teeth) at the moment, probably for another 2 or 3 months before they can put the permanent fix in. Would it be best to stop dating until then? They're don't look that bad (and better than what was there before), but I feel that the idea of dentures at all might be too much for most people my age. I'm in my 20s and male.
