Did a recent teeth cleaning make my teeth more likely to chip and break?

I ate some popcorn today and chipped the back of one of my lower front teeth. There is a sizable chunk missing. I didn't even crunch down on an unpopped kernel or anything, so this is a bit strange. I'm wondering if the recent teeth cleaning I had - which involved a heavy amount of scraping to the back of my teeth - somehow weakened my enamel and made it more likely to break. [more inside]

How to get a dentist to take my inflamed and bleeding gums seriously?

I went through a period of time where I didn't take as good care of my teeth as I should have due to excessive stress in my life. I wasn't flossing, didn't brush very often and also was grinding and clenching my teeth a lot. [more inside]

Appointment(s) with new dentist: is this normal?

Is it normal for a new dentist to expect one appointment for an exam/x-rays, a separate appointment for a cleaning, and then another follow-up appointment for any work that needs to be done (and I'm fairly sure I need at least one filling, possibly a crown)? Also, is it true that no dentists offer warm rinsing/jet water? (Do you know one that does offer this near Durham, NC?) [more inside]

Abscess or just sore swollen dental ligaments?

After a filling was replaced and ground down a couple of times recently, I have a tooth that is very sore to the touch, but does not ache on its own. The gum beside it is swollen and tender and soft, and if i make myself bite down it feels spongy under the tooth. The dentist says he can get me in again in a week. Is this an abscess? Do I need to push to get in faster? [more inside]

Should I go to the dentist? And if so, where do I even go?

I recently arrived in Uppsala, Sweden. I'm here for six months but my teeth started hurting today. It isn't so much as pain as it is sensitivity towards pressure and heat. It isn't ongoing and it comes and goes (usually if I bite down on something very hard). It happened a few weeks before I left, but it went away so quickly that I didn't think it was an issue. Now, I'm not sure if I even need to see a dentist and if I do, I'm not sure I am covered by insurance because it isn't an emergency procedure. Therefore, I will go to a dentist if it is absolutely recommended, but I'm trying to avoid it. So my question is two-fold: should I go see a dentist? If so, where in Uppsala do I even go?

Tender gums with no bleeding or swelling?

tl;dr: Starting last night I suddenly began experiencing gum pain when I floss, as well as some pain when chewing on a old root canal tooth (and the flossing-induced gum pain is especially noticeable in this area). However, there is no bleeding at all and my gums look pink in the mirror. What's going on? Can it wait until my routine cleaning next week? [more inside]

Gum Receding Between Two Teeth, What To Do?

The gum between two of my back teeth has been painfully inflamed since Friday, and in attempting to address it today I discovered that there's a rather sizable divot between the teeth that I can see when I use floss to push the infected gum down. I'm too young to have receding gums. My dentist is on vacation until my appointment with him next Thursday. What can/should I do in the interim? [more inside]

Getting deep clean and scaling with my dental hygienist vs periodontist.

I went to the periodontist and was told I needed deep cleaning and scaling (4 quadrants). I got the perio charting done and had it sent to my dentist. The dental office said they can do that procedure, which I am happy about. My question: is the dental hygienist (who apparently does 90% of the cleanings there) skilled enough to do this procedure, as good as a periodontist? I have the option of requesting my dentist to do it if I am uncomfortable with her. [more inside]

Any reason not to put a stainless steel crown on my 3-year-old's tooth?

We learned from our dentist that our 3-year-old has enamel hypoplasia, serious enough that they want to put a stainless-steel crown on her molar. I tend to trust our dentist, who we've been with for years, but I wonder: should I have any concern about nickel and other metals leeching into the tooth itself, possibly causing sensitivities down the line, as this paper suggests? Or should we just go ahead and do this? Set my mind at ease, MeFi dentists and/or people with teeth!

Post or crown or something else?

My partner (28 years old) had, on the same upper back-ish tooth, two failed root canals followed by a tooth extraction. They're still waiting for the extraction to heal. But they told us that a post is impossible since his bone is too thin. I hear a crown requires root canalling neighboring teeth, which we really don't want. Can we just leave it as is without teeth shifting significantly? Is there another option that doesn't requiring destroying MORE teeth? [more inside]

Should my seven-year-old son's dentist knock him out?

Just got home from a dentist appointment with my seven-year-old son. Five of his baby teeth are crowding the rest of his teeth and need to be extracted very soon. But he's extremely anxious at the dentist, and after today's ordeal, they're recommending putting him completely under using IV sedation with an on-site MD. I had IV sedation for my wisdom teeth, and it was amazing, but I'm flat-out terrified to knock out my little boy. He's never had anesthesia of any kind. Is it worth doing? Are there any risks or caveats I should know? Would it be better to stick with oral anasthetic? Help!
