How can I help keep my delusional, elderly parent off the streets?

I am the sole support person for one of my parents. They have no contact with any family members or past friends. In general, my parent is friendly and decent; however, they keep fleeing and/or being kicked out of housing due to their paranoid delusions. How can I help? [more inside]

working with student with mental health issues--delusions of persecution

I have an adult ed student who has been quite distressed lately. He likes me and will often share things about his life. Recently he has seemed both physically and mentally unwell, and today he told me he thinks one of his neighbours (whom he doesn't like AT ALL, and is not shy about saying so) is making him sick via invisible rays. Specifically, my student believes this neighbour is sending rays from their television and radio that are causing him to have headaches and blurred vision. Have you ever worked with a student who had delusions like this? How did you handle it? What is the best thing I can do, as a non-mental health professional who interacts with this student daily? Manic episode with delusions - what are treatment programs?

Friend is having a manic episode with pretty strong delusions. Doc is treating her as an outpatient (she is not threatening suicide or to kill anyone), so she's still "on her own" in between doc visits, which is leading to some undesirable outcomes to say the least. A question on treatment: is there anything like a "halfway house" for those with mental illness where they can cool down from these episodes in a safe place? She doesn't need a hospital bed or a padded room, but does need someone looking after her so she makes the right choices. [more inside]

Can I help an old, distant friend with apparent mental illness?

An old friend now living in another state looked me up. At first they seemed to have been experiencing the aftereffects of significant but ordinary traumatic events in life. I now believe they are struggling with significant mental illness that they are in denial of. I don't know how I could help them or if it's even a good idea to try. [more inside]

What were people paranoid about before modern technology?

Due to some personal motivations, I've been reading a lot about paranoia lately and most of the delusions I hear about involve modern technology, ie. wire taps, hidden cameras, etc. What are some examples of paranoid delusions before that technology existed?

How to help someone who is showing signs of psychosis?

My best friend appears to be sliding into psychosis. Who and how should I approach in order to help him out? I know IANAD and YANAD - but I need less info on diagnosis and more info/personal experiences/stories about reaching out to someone who has a undiagnosed mental illness in order to help them. How do I help my psychotic, delusional elderly mother?

I don't know how to help my mother, who is relatively recently diagnosed with dementia, but showing psychotic and delusional symptoms. Short-term skilled nursing care wants to release her to board-and-care, and I know this won't work. How can I (and should I) get my mom committed to a psych ward? [more inside]

Cubed time? Ha, fool. Nature is a dodecahedron! You have been educated *stupid*.

SchizoFilter: I'd like to become a connoisseur of internet crazy. Does Timecube have a more harmonious 5-Day cousin? I know Cindy McCain (but not John, thankfully) is a Reptilian, but are they mole people, too? Can I get cursed by some chain-mail, please? I want all the crazy! Let loose your delirium, MeFi! You're so gay, and you don't even like boys... ???

I fell in love with my best friend, who is a guy. I’m a young bisexual guy. Apparently, he is not. Did the “wrong thing” and told him about how I felt, and was rejected, but things seemed okay afterward. However, I’m still hurting, I’m feeling delusional about it, and sometimes I think that he inadvertently isn’t helping… how do I live with my best friend now? Help me, Metafilter! [more inside]
