MacgyverFilter: link sharing using MS Office

Macgyver IT: I want my team to use something like del.icio.us to share links. But since this is ask.metafilter, I can't use the obvious right answer. I need to make something like it myself, using <strike>bubblegum and string</strike> the MS Office 2000 suite and my knowledge of VB. What would be my best approach? This is clearly insane, but I want to try (please don't ask why I can't use something reasonable -- I just can't). I don't need the full del.icio.us, just links and tags. I'm also okay with having only one person at a time able to add a link to the dB, and everyone sharing a big ball of links.

I've thought about using an Excel file, but I don't know if there's a reasonable way to do that, or what that way would be. Could that work, or should I bite the bullet and go for Access? Is there a feature hidden somewhere (in Outlook?) that I'm overlooking?

Help me find the blackberry delicousness, please.

Help me get Seattle-quality blackberries in the NYC area. Is there anywhere in Manhattan, the outer boroughs, or even Long Island where I can get really great blackberries? I have never found them, in the last ten years, at any store (not even Kirkland and Issaquah-based Costco!). Nothing has come close to the taste off the vine - not tart at all, almost overripe tasting compared to most fruits, somewhat sweet, and very rich & earthy.

I was back in Seattle a couple of months ago and gorged myself on them off the vine, and for the first time made pie with them on my own - and the pies were incredible. I'm hoping to find a source so that I can share the joy of ripe blackberries with my friends and family, and so that I can make delicious pies for fall and winter festivities.

Pre-Red Pepper Asian Cuisine?

Help me find Asian food before the Columbian Exchange? This article mentions ancient Indian curries before the Portuguese brought red peppers to the subcontinent

Much of the food is worth the wait. Take the chicken pepper roast ($9.95), a splendid heap of irregular poultry tidbits thickly coated with black mustard seeds, coconut shreds, and crushed black peppercorns. Recipes such as this are ancient: They date from before the Portuguese introduced chilies to the subcontinent, sometime in the late 16th century. Indeed, the Sanskrit term for black pepper is "kari"—a word that evolved in succeeding centuries into the colonial catch-all expression for spice combinations: "curry."

Reminded me of this absolutely delicious black pepper tempeh I once had cooked for me by an Indonesian friend. Does anyone know of any good recipes for Korean/Indonesian/Indian food before the arrival of the red pepper? What would the major flavors have been besides black pepper, coconut, and mustard? Would kimchee have tasted like German sauerkraut?

Looking for interesting social bookmarkers

Who are some interesting delicious.com bookmarkers? I'm looking for people that have interesting delicious (del.icio.us) bookmark feeds.

Examples of user types I'm looking for:

(1) Academic bookmarkers e.g. Brad de Long, or Cosma Shalizi.

(2) Specialist topic bookmarkers e.g. bldgblog's architecture stream, or my mind on books blog stream (they bookmark psychology, neuroscience, and other brain related books).

(3) Any others that you consider interesting (maybe a brief explanation why?).

Things I'm not looking for:

(1) individuals whose bookmarks are carbon copies of digg, reddit, or other sites e.g. people that keep bookmarks of lolcats, the latest yellow journalism and outrage of the web, or web2.0 top ten lists of how to wear a laptop as a hat.

(2) tags themselves. I'm looking for interesting people with depth and their collection of bookmarks, not interesting tags.

Thanks.

Where to get fresh-baked (artisan?) bread near Menlo Park, CA?

Where to buy fresh baked (artisan?) bread in the Menlo Park, CA area? For as long as I can remember, I've really liked fresh baked bread. I'm trying to find somewhere where I can get bread as close to the point of having just been baked as possible. (I'm a little too lazy to bake it myself at the moment, as this previous ask.mefi discusses.) Ideally, this would be a place that bakes bread all day and I could just drop in and buy a loaf (or a boule or whatever).

Complicating my quest is that there seem to be different types of bakeries, and most of the bakeries around here seem focused on selling cupcakes and the like. Is there a special name for a bread bakery, or special resources for finding them?

California also seems to have some sort of "artisan bread" movement, but I can only seem to find big artisan bread wholesalers (which is what Acme Bread seems to mostly be, unless I go up to the city). By the time I get, say, Acme Bread at my local supermarket it seems a bit old (though maybe I'm going at the wrong times). My favourite place to get fresh baked bread on the east coast calls itself an "artisan bakery" and seems to specialise only in bread, so maybe this is the right direction?

Any suggestions for specific locations or where/how to look would be most appreciated!

Safari 4 and Delicious.com together?

Do you use Safari and Delicious.com together, successfully? HOW!? I'm enjoying all aspects of Safari 4 so far, and happy to bid adieu to bloated slow crashy Firefox, but I'm really jonesing for a useful Delicious integration. Delicioussafari.com seems a little (a lot) less than I need. What I need is my bookmark list right there as in the wonderful Firefox Delicious plugin. Any tips?

del.icio.us --> wordpress

Import delicious.com links to wordpress as 'blog entries' - how? I do not want a feed of my delicious data in my wordpress. I want to migrate all of my delicious data to wordpress. There are plenty of tools to migrate other formats into wordpress. There's nothing particularly exotic about delicious data. I'm going to guess a tool doesn't already exist because of a mental disconnect. delicious is thought of as a bookmark service, wordpress is thought of as a blog / site manager. But my delicious data is made up of (short) 'blog entires' - title, URL, notes, date, categories, etc. Importing this data shouldn't be any more difficult than importing blogger data, for example. But I've been stumped for over a year, and those I've paid to find an answer for me have failed. delicious is not a tiny or obscure service, yet... I'm just not having any success. No success either in converting delicious to something else and then converting that something else to wordpress. Many thanks in advance.

Ramen Please

Favorite Ramen Recipes? I am looking to augment my Ramen meals. What do you guys like to add? How do you manipulate Ramen to achieve maximum awesomeness? I have seen this thread, and several of the others under the Ramen tag. However, I am not looking for Ramen-like substitutes. I just want to know what I can do with the tried and true, 25c noodle packages.

And yes, for you nerds who are wondering, it is because I saw Ponyo the other night. HAM! I WANT HAM!

Facebook borks my firefox bookmarks bar

I've been using Del.icio.us and I've made a "Bookmark on Delicious" link for my Firefox bookmarks bar, using this page. However, when I click on my link (or the My Delicious link I also created) they both take me to a facebook page that I visited on the day I created the bookmark. I removed them both and reinstalled them, but they changed back immediately to a new facebook page; I then manually changed the links to point to the ones from the delicious page, which worked for a while, but on restarting firefox they changed again to a facebook page.

Any ideas?

Only New Entries In Delicious RSS Feeds For Tags

Can I filter out previously posted URIs from a delicious RSS feed for a specific tag? I'm subscribed to a handful of delicious RSS feeds for certain tags. While the signal to noise ratio isn't great, I do see about a dozen things on each feed that is something I would have missed otherwise. However, most of the stuff that I see on a daily basis (over 200 posts) are URIs I know have been posted before. I estimate I can easily cut in half the stuff I don't want to see if there was a feed that only included a URI that was completely new to delicious. Is there any way to do this? Is there a yahoo pipes for this? Something else I should look into (aside from roll my own aggregator and filter manually)? Thanks!

How do I get my links in Twitter to post to Delicious?

Is there a way or tool to easily wed Twitter to Delicious, through sickness and in health? Preferably more health... I have been using Delicious since 2004 to save bookmarks, so I can access them anywhere. However, since the advent of Twitter, I find myself just posting links to it, in order to spread the word of something interesting, quickly. I still want to keep a copy for my "records," though.

How might I go about doing this, without having to essentially double post? Ideally, I would like some tool that detected when I posted a link in Twitter and automatically added it to Delicious, too, perhaps with the full tweet's text in the link description area. I'd like some solution for tagging, too, but I realize that may be asking for too much, really.

Does anything like this exist? I found out about twitticious, but it seems to have issues. That was also posted a year ago, so I'm hoping that there are some newer tools out that I'm not aware of. Help me, guys!

Posting to multiple accounts in Delicious.com

Posting links to two different Delicious accounts, in Windows, preferably in Firefox. Is it possible without logging in/out all the time, or using one browser for each account? Basically, what I'd like is an add-on like Pukka (which seems to be Mac only). There's a previous question on the same topic, but it's from 2005 and I was hoping there'd be something new by now.

How can I publish links to press coverage in a blog?

How do I (semi) automatically publish links to many different articles, sorted by date, to a blog? The university I work for gets lots of mentions in the news media every day. To keep track of this, they've been maintaining a daily email and (internal) web site linking to the coverage. Thus far, this has been created entirely manually.

In an effort to help streamline this, I suggested a few changes:

1. Track the clips in Delicious.com, annotate them and tag them by date (021709, for instance).

2. Either publish the Delicious RSS feed for that tag, by date, in a Wordpress blog (using a plugin) or

2a. Use Feedburner Buzzboost to accomplish the same. This is where we are at the moment.

This is working, somewhat. But as Delicious doesn't allow manual sorting of bookmarks within tags (right?), the order of the bookmarks is either by the order they were entered, or alphabetically. Because we'd like to sort the display by importance of clip, the only way I can see to do this is by prepending a number or letter (for the sort) to the headline.

So my question is this: Is there a better way? I'd prefer something we can cobble together, but if there's a product that does this, I'd look at that too.

Thanks for your help.

Facebook, delicious and flickr not loading!

My facebook, delicious and flickr aren't working, but all other sites are fine. What's wrong and how do I fix it? I have been trying for over a week to use my facebook account unsuccessfully.

I use Firefox 3.0.5 on a MacBook although I have also tried on Safari 3.1.2.

Usually, I am able to sign in and arrive at the home page successfully. Then, when I try to go into any other page, the page won't load and I get a "failed to open page" error or "page load error - connection interrupted" or something of the sort.

Clicking on links in my email to posted pictures or messages also doesn't work and the page will not load. I have tried deleting all facebook cookies, all cookies, restarting Firefox, restarting the computer and nothing has worked.

My account is working fine on other computers, but since it doesn't happen with any other site, this must be an issue with Facebook AND my computer.

Also, my delicious account won't load either. I tired on Safari and the home page loaded but none of the other pages and I get "connection interrupted" as well.

When I try logging into flickr (through the Yahoo! sign in page, which is where flickr redirects you when you click to sign in) i get sent to a blank page: https://login.yahoo.com/config/login_verify2?

These sites work fine when I sign in through other computers and all other sites and the internet in general are working fine on my computer. I have also tried deleting cookies for these. For delicious it works and allows me to enter the home page, but then I still can't access any of the other pages.

Does anyone know what is going on and how I can fix it?

Thanks!

Mac N Cheese, please!

[ComfortFoodFilter] Give me your kickassedest huevo-lacto vegetarian mac-n-cheese recipes. I've been tasked with making mac n' cheese for the Super Bowl party the mister is hosting on Sunday. I have limited online / wireless time right now and have come up short on google and mefi search is down. I'm sure this has been asked but I have a couple qualifiers:

I need a killer baked mac n cheese recipe. I have pretty much every good spice available, and I will probably be using the good Tillamook extra sharp cheese. But beyond that I'm kind of stumped.

Here are the ingredients qualifiers:

- NO meat, with no meaning none. No bacon, no chicken, no ham, no tuna, no broth.
- NO mushrooms. This makes me sad, but that's just how it goes.

Preferably:

- no canned soup / soup packet type ingredients. My goal is to use fresh grated x-sharp cheddar for the main cheese.
- would prefer this not to have too much of a custard-based sauce as custards kind of scare me to begin with, and especially at altitude (5300')

So we're looking at a pretty simple, straightforward mac n' cheese casserole recipe. I was pointed at the one on Alton Brown's site but the custard base thing kind of gave me the willies. I've never done the baked mac 'n cheese deal before, only the sort from a box. So I need one that will both rock and be fairly easy to deal with when we've got a bunch of people over.

Help? Thanks!

The joy of not eating junk food

What are your favorite simple, healthy, flavorful and totally delicious recipes? Fresher the ingredients, the better (ie, few or no preservatives). Meals, snacks, treats, beverages, lay it on me! I have allergies to preservatives (especially sulfates). Back when I was living super healthy I used to cook a lot and keep my meals as close as possible to the source. I also had lost my love for sweets... but alas, this year I stopped paying attention to all of this and starting eating junk again. I can tell my poor diet has affected me both emotionally and physically, so I'm trying to get back into my old healthy ways. Mainly, been forcing myself to work out and return to my old eating habits (ie, cut down on sweets, avoid white flour, don't eat out much, no canned/processed foods, lots of veggies).

Moral of the story... I'm looking for new, good, easy recipes that are deeeelicious and will make my new diet more exciting and fun. I have a tiny kitchen so it's always good if the meal doesn't take *too* many pans. I tend to use my electric grill a lot, and I recently inherited a food processor but I've never used it.

I do have a relatively sophisticated palate so don't hold back. I love foods from different cultures and I'm all for recipes that use a lot of flavor-filled spices. Last night for dinner I had stir fried chicken and veggies in green curry spices. Today for breakfast I made a nice egg white omelette with zucchini, onions and spices, and a little skim mozzarella on top. For lunch I pureed some broccoli soup in the blender a la Gordon Ramsay's recipe (although I'm sure his soup is better -- he probably would've called me a donkey for not having goat cheese and walnuts on hand). I tend to eat a bit high on protein, veggies and/or fruits. Low on carbs. Omega 3s are great. More vitamins and minerals the better (I try to avoid empty calories -- things like iceberg lettuce that are all water).

Thanks!

Oh, and if you have any simple recipes for little treats that aren't too unhealthy that's good too, 'cuz this sweet tooth of mine isn't going to go away overnight!

Need help with personal knowledge management!

How are people organizing their information (professional and personal) in this day and age? What kind of system is flexible enough to cope with multiple data types (PDFs, DOCs, short text notes, hyperlinks, ...), efficient during collection (when browsing the Web, when reading documents, ...) and won't get in my way when I try to use it? (I looked into existing posts - good start, but I'd like suggestions that also incorporate whole files and not just bookmarks and snippets)

I'm trying to find a coherent system using multiple tools - mindmaps, note taking tools, file search tools and others - so that I can be more productive in storing and finding the right information. A personal Memex if you will, similar to Vannevar Bush's original idea but with proper search.

I'm an IT/Network Security Architect/Engineer. I deal with information on a daily basis - from configuration snippets and links to product documentation to written reports and form documents. Sometimes the entire document is relevant and sometimes a simple summary or just a snippet may do.

I've used mind maps (with MindManager) since 2001 and I love the concept and the tool. I've used it to take notes when studying, to create document structure and then exporting to Word, to capture notes in meetings, etc...

I've recently been introduced to Microsoft OneNote. It also seems very, very powerful in organizing information - notebooks, sections, pages, etc... all searchable and nicely integrated into Windows. I've come to rely on OneNote for screen captures, print outputs and the integration of short notes to my PDA.

I find desktop search tools (initially Yahoo's Desktop - an OEM of X1 - and now Google Desktop, with its' capability to search MindMaps...) to be also very, very good at helping find information, especially when it is in a structured document (Word, PDF, ...)

Finally I know there's other tools out there:
- Wikis (web-based and local storage) TiddlyWiki as a good example
- Evernote
- Scrapbook firefox extension (excellent for local storage of pages!)
- Delicious
- Google Notebook
- Stars and tags in Google Reader and other RSS
- others… heck, I've heard of people using iTunes to manage their PDFs!

I read Lifehacker, I do GTD (I use it in a slightly modified fashion) and I live the inbox zero concept. My issue is not so much task management as information management.

So, what kind of systems are people using for managing their information? What's the best way of keeping track of some configuration details for firewalls I work with? How can I easily store (and retrieve) interesting RSS posts? Suggestions for storing (or not) a PDF whitepaper on something?

What to do with extra oyster juice?

After schucking a bunch of extra-large oysters, I have an extra-large cup of oyster liquor. What should I do with it? So I recently discovered that it is oyster season here in Paris and I can get tons of oysters for !@#$ing cheap. I bought a baker's dozen of Fines de Claires No. 2, which are big-ass oysters with a lot of tasty, tasty liquor. I was smart enough to shuck them over a bowl, so I managed to catch any of the liquor that I spilled during shucking. After eating all of the oysters and the juice that remained in their shells, I was left with a large bowl filled with oyster liquor. What should I do with this delicious salty substance? (the oyster liquor, that is, you fiilthy person)

After letting the grit settle to the bottom, I came up with two ideas:

1. tomato juice + oyster juice + vodka + hot sauce = bloody caesar, sorta.

2. use instead of stock to deglaze a pan of sautéed winter vegetables.

Both were great, but I still have about 500ml of the stuff to use. Any suggestions?

Need recommendations for personal website as hub to internet life for a first time page creator. I'm wanting to establish an official internet presence for myself. I've never made a site before, so simplicity is key. I would like the site to show my recent flickr uploads, my delicious shared items for a specific tag, and my shared google reader items. Adsense integration would be nice, too. I don't feel like I have much more to contribute to the web than this right now, so I don't think a "blog" makes sense. Just a simple site to put all my web junk in one place.
Help me find the best service for me. As I said, I've never done this before, so specifics would be nice.
Thanks, hive!

Delicious Dupefilter?

When watching a tag on Delicious, whether through subscribing on-site or to the tag's RSS feed, I find reading through the deluge of posts quite cumbersome. Is there a way to filter out duplicate links to the same site that have been posted by different users? There apparently used to be a service to do just this, but it was taken down at some point.

Moving Bookmarks between del.cio.us accounts

Simple del.icio.us question, followed by extensions. First, I have an account and an organization I'm helping to launch has an account. What's the easiest way to move bookmarks to this new account?

This group of school librarians is going to be using del.icio.us, Shelfari and some other SN sites to do some collaboration and professional discourse. In your experience, when is it best for groups to have their own dedicated accounts on services like these (as opposed to using the 'group' and network functions...)?

Finally, any good rules of thumb on when it's better to create separate accounts when using a service for multiple purposes (for example, using Shelfari as a reading log as well as a list of possible acquisitions) and when it's better to simply use tags to differentiate within a single account?

Searching for a song filter: looking for a song that played on Reading Rainbow in 1988. I'm looking for a way to listen to 'the pasta song' from Reading Rainbow: The Robbery at the Diamond Dog Diner. I'm not picky as to how-if it's available streaming somewhere or if I can buy it on cassette. I've been looking for a few hours with no luck, so any help would be appreciated!
