Changing my name on del.icio.us

How can I create a new user account on del.icio.us, starting with all my current links and tags? I want to keep an openly shared account, but I would like to disengage from certain people who have been tracking and commenting on my links and tags.

I've seen some (less than helpful*) discussion of importing and exporting, but its seems that the importing part requires "getting under the hood"* to some extent. Anyone know a simple way to do this?
alternatives to del.icio.us?

When I import my 700 bookmarks into http://del.icio.us they are automatically set to "not shared." I understand this is to prevent spam, and I have been unable to find an alternative to manually setting each link to "share."

Is there a solution I have overlooked? Or, is there a cooler/niftier alternative to del.icio.us that I should be using instead? Thank you.

How do I make Google Reader and Del.icio.us work together?

Can I "post" to Del.icio.us from Google Reader? Here is what I would like to do:

Each morning, I go through my feeds on Google Reader. I click "share" for items that I feel are important for others in my office to know about and then send an email with commentary about each story. I'd really like to actually leave commentary on the page itself with the links. I've noticed that you can do this in Del.icio.us (they call them "descriptions" I believe), so here's what I'm asking:

1> Can I add my own text/commentary to shared items on Google Reader? I didn't think so, but maybe I'm missing something.

2> Can I easily "export" any Google Reader shared items to Del.icio.us?

And no, I'm not looking to start a blog. I know a blog solves this problem, but for other reasons, it's a non-starter right now.

Can any of this be done?

Help me preserve my deliciousness

Help me preserve my deliciousness (i.e. disappearing del.icio.us bookmarks)

Lately I’ve noticed that my delicioused pages are slowly disappearing (mostly how-tos and recipes) so I’d like to find a tool that will crawl and locally cache all my delicious bookmarks. Bonus if I can specify a tag (or tag wildcard. Example: I tag as recipes.french, recipes.dessert, recipes.dessert.ice_cream etc. so I would love to cache recipes.*)

My google fu found me some python scripts (I have no idea how to use em) and someone suggested using spur (but spur doesn’t seem to like my delicious account).

Any better ideas, mefites?

How do I automate the exporting of Bloglines Keep New blog posts?

How can I automate the exporting of Keep New blog posts from Bloglines to del.icio.us? Although reading my Bloglines LifeHacker feed is a joy-filled daily ritual. Yet, Gina, Adam, Josh et. al. are the chief contributors to the ballooning number of almost 400 LifeHacker articles in my Bloglines account with the Keep New check box thingy ticked-off.

I am finally convinced I have to use a different method to store Blogline posts for my future reference and review. I would hate to lose LifeHacker goodies or any of my other +/- 1500 Keep New posts because they represent 3 years of meta-aggregation.

As you can imagine, manually exporting a post-per-click with Firefox's del.icio.us add-on is a time-intensive task with a high score on the boring and tedious index.

Perhaps a MeFite King of Kode has already written a script to automate the Bloglines export process while retaining the posts' titles and URLs?

What direction does the hive noggin offer?

Group Bookmarking

Know of an online collaborative bookmarking tool for within a closed set of users ? Of course, there's I'm looking for an online service that will allow my small team in work to collaborate on a set of internet bookmarks/favorites (whatever you want to call them) but within our group only - not open to the public. Sort of like a hybrid between del.icio.us and irows, and equally free and easy to use. Any recommendations ?

I am a del.icio.us power use, and I am trying to use the new Firefox 2.0 which integrates with del.icio.us. I'm having some trouble. First, all of the bookmarks I had stored locally that were in folders seem to have disappeared. Where did they go? Second, because I have soooo many bookmarks on del.icio.us, I have the "Bookmaek synching in progress" bar loading constantly, and it REALLY slows down my Firefox speed.
Can anyone help me find my missing bookmarks? Does anyone have tips on how to use Firefox 2.0 with bookmarks without the molasses speed?

I'm trying to clean up my del.icio.us links... After creating a number of tag bundles and deleting and renaming superflous tags, I still find myself wanting to straighten up my del.icio.us links a bit more. Specifically, I'd like to batch edit a number of links at a time; that is, I'd like to add/remove a tag from a number of links at once, but not necessarily all links marked with that tag. Is there a quick way to do this? I did find Delicer, but would prefer something that I didn't have to download. (In the spirit of being oh-so-meta, I have, of course, browsed del.icio.us links tagged "del.icio.us," as well as this page.)

Secondly, I've been using del.icio.us director for some time as it's been the only usable UI I've seen created for the service, but would like to hear from others on del.icio.us interfaces that they've found clean, compact, quick-loading, and feature-rich (e.g. ability to edit links from within the UI). Danke!

Daily MT blog post for del.icio.us links with one specific tag

How do I get a daily post to my Movable Type 3.2 blog of my del.icio.us links with one particular tag? I know how to set up a daily post of all my del.icio.us links using the "daily blog post" in the del.icio.us settings (instructions are at Common Craft if you are interested), but can't figure out how to limit that to links with one specific tag.

Right now, for my blog, See Also..., I tag some of my del.icio.us links with "see_also," then use the del.icio.us linkrolls to display just those items tagged "see_also" in a sidebar on my blog. Then I use FeedBurner's Link Splicer to insert those same items to my RSS feed as a daily feed item.

This works OK, but I'd prefer to have them show up as a bona fide blog entry, integrating those links with my blog archives, allowing comments on those posts, allowing me to axe the sidebar, etc. I'm not prepared to switch from either MT or del.icio.us.

More private alternatives to del.icio.us

More private alternatives to del.icio.us for social bookmarking within our company? We would like to use del.icio.us within our company to share bookmarks relating to industry news, best-practices, competitor activity and the occasional funny site. We'd like to be able to summarize the link, but by using del.icio.us they would have to be very generic, as we don't want to do our competitor's work for them.

Is there a more private social bookmarking site that we could use that would be password protected but still have the wonderful del.icio.us features outlined below?

Required del.icio.us traits:
- Tag bookmarks
- Get RSS feeds for the entire account and specific tags
- Easy bookmarking via a browser button or similar
- Multiple people can bookmark and view (but controlled, we're fine with sharing an account/password)

Walk me through getting a del.icio.us clone running locally on my Mac?

I would like to build and host a del.icio.us clone on my Mac (Intel iMac running Tiger). It need not be accessible outside of my machine, although if you can advise me how to do that while still keeping my machine secure, that would be a very nice plus. I am able to build simple command-line apps in Unix and puzzle some stuff out, but I am very much not a l33t hax00r. Can anyone walk me through the process very simple step by very simple step? I have tried various options since unsuccessfully asking this question of Ask MeFi, and have still grown certain that the extremely simple interface of del.icio.us is what I'm looking to work with for to-dos. When they're done, zap them. The tagging can let me sort through my ideas on any one of a hundred different levels by throwing tons of tags at a to-do (work shoppinglist imac web priority1 quickie). The hyperlinking is useful because so many of my to-dos have a hyperlink attached to them. And the bookmarklets will be very swift, given that they'll be interoperating with a local del.icio.us and no web server. It's very much what I'm desiring to do.

The problem is that I do have a minor bit of technical knowledge, but not the full amount. I can go to the command line and do "./configure, make, make install." But if it throws off errors, the best I can do is Google the error to see what other people did to solve it. I can install stuff that it needs to have to depend on. I know what tar and gz are. I understand that MySQL has to do with databases. But a lot of this stuff is gonna be like "Guh?!" to me.

I know that del.icio.us now has a "keep this private" bookmark. But this would interfere with my use of del.icio.us as a linklog system for my website. I also know that there are to-do sites that include tagging and Smart Lists. However, they don't seem as swift to me, and their interfaces seem to include a lot more steps than I'd like, even with the bookmarklets they use.

I know of at least one open-source del.icio.us clone. However, trying to install it without customized help led to a bellyflop and the aforementioned "guh?!?!?!?!".

Can anyone help me out here? Keep in mind that Lifehacker and 43 Folders and other sites read Ask MeFi, so you could end up being a superstar to a lot more people than just me. ;-)

Am I using Del.icio.us correctly?

If I create Del.icio.us tags that only I would understand am I doing anything wrong, or perhaps even undermining the service? For example, if I want to use the service for research or inspiration links I would like to rate the sites I tag. So as well as tagging a portfolio site as 'art' (along with other tags) I might also add 'art***' (where *** is a 1 - 5 star rating).

I'm also thinking about categories. I am keen to switch to keyword tagging, but I would also like to broadly group my links under categories. I'm thinking about 'cat:imagery' 'cat:games' etc.

Is there anything wrong with this or perhaps is there a better way of doing it?

Handling to-dos with a tagging-based web app?

I'm looking for a web-based to-do application with a few very specific features, but, essentially, one that's almost a del.icio.us clone and is very much centralized not on categories, but on tags. I was hoofing my way around my Backpack account and realized that I had not gone through the majority of things in there. Basically, it was a hassle to find things and to read; 37 Signals makes nice things in some ways, but they've applied tagging to pages, not tasks, and there's a host of other imperfections and problems which make me realize I very much want to migrate, the gist of which is that it obviously just isn't effectively working for me if it's a pain in the ass to go through.

What I'd ideally like is something that's almost identical to the delicious interface, where I could use a bookmarklet to add a task. The nice things about tags is you can then proceed to set up your own system -- i.e., anything with a 'p5' category might be important, or I could tag "grocery" for grocery shopping, and then like delicious, you could join tags (i.e. http://del.icio.us/tags/tag1+tag2) to get more customized reports, i.e., http://hypotheticaltodolist.com/WCityMike/grocery+downtown or http://hypotheticaltodolist.com/WCityMike/grocery+nearhome.

There's not much use in public sharing of this data, so privacy would be nice. It would also be good to be able to encode HTML inside an entry, i.e., "Check out this website and this website tonight." But the absence of either of those is not a killer.

Remember the Milk is close to what I'd like, especially with its Smart Lists and tagging and search language, but even it is slightly more complex than I'd like in terms of data entry -- and I find the checkbox NOT representing a complete horribly counterintuitive. That having been said, I'm thinking I may migrate to a combination of a private Furl account for todo-related URLs and a Remember the Milk account ... but ideally, it'd be even nicer to go a different route with this and have them together in this dream app of mine.

I should say that the primary reason I'm looking for this in a web app is I'd like to be able to be able to access the data from Mac and Windows platforms at home and work, respectively, and perhaps even on a cell phone -- and web apps traditionally have that portability.

What's the best online bookmark managing tool?

What's the best online bookmark managing tool?

Importance placed on being able to access them from any computer and an interface/usability similar to bookmarks native in firefox? I like how Firefox manages my bookmarks. It's quick, always there, easy to search, can be added to in a flash, and sits in the sidebar always in the order that I added them and am used to using them.

However, I'm tired of only having access to those links while sitting at home. What I'm looking for is an online bookmark manager that
- will sit in my Firefox sidebar,
- look/act just like the native bookmarks on my own computer,
- is easy and extremely quick/painless to add a bookmark to (and remove one if i want)
- is accessible from public terminals (and not only through Firefox)

less, but still important
- doesn't require me to log-in for each use
- has the option of keeping bookmarks private (yes, I realize these two clash a bit)

I've tried del.icio.us, and I like it, but I can't find a Firefox extension I like/that works the way I want to bring del.icio.us to my sidebar. I've tried pluck, but it reordered by bookmarks when I uploaded them and does not make it super smooth to add a new bookmark. I've tried Yahoo! My Bookmarks, but it is way to cumbersome to manage them (reorder, delete, etc). I've looked at the Firefox extension Foxmarks, but it doesn't appear to let me view my bookmarks from IE, or a public terminal.

So which service do you suggest, and why? Or, are my priorities wrong, do they emphasize the wrong things, and should I change what I expect from my bookmarks?

...what's next?

Importing Bookmarks into Del.icio.us?

Importing bookmarks into Del.icio.us? Is this feature coming back? I just switched over to Firefox and have started using del.icio.us as well. I want to load all my many bookmarks from my XP laptop into del.icio.us, but for two weeks at least that feature has been disabled, with a message "Our import feature has been turned off for a few days while we fix some bugs. Sorry!"

Is the import feature coming back? Is there another way to load my bookmarks en masse? I am antsy to get this done as I need to return the laptop to my employer pretty soon.

Del.icio.us settings for a daily feed to a Blogger blog

What settings should I use to create a del.icio.us 'thingy' to feed daily links to my Blogger blog? Here are the current settings I'm trying.

job_name [a random word]
out_name [my Blogger user ID]
out_pass [my Blogger password]
out_url [http://myblogid.blogspot.com/]
out_time [5]
out_blog_id [my 7-digit Blogger ID number]
out_cat_id [1]

Is it that 'out_url' setting that's wrong? There's no documentation for these thingies yet, and settings gleaned from ask.mefi and Google-produced websites haven't helped.

exporting blogger to del.icio.us

Is it possible, without custom scripting, to take the contents of a blogger blog and import the links into del.icio.us and auto-tag them?

Sheep is a bookmarklet that has auto-tagging, but I'd rather not individually click through five years of posts on multiple blogs to do this. If this isn't possible with some sort of pre-existing script, I'm open to suggestions as to how it *might* be done. Thanks. I realized recently that I'm not really blogging, I'm just bookmarking stuff that looks cool with a short descriptive excerpt, and I'd like to move that content into an application that doesn't require that annoying word verification and employs tags.

Daily Del.icio.us with Livejournal?

Is it possible to get Daily Del.icio.us posting to my Livejournal? I've seen a few different posts on getting it to work with MT and a couple on getting it to work with WordPress, but nothing on getting it to work with Livejournal or Blogger (LJ supports the Blogger API).

I tried getting it to run on my own, putting the following things in:

job_name livejournal
out_name my LJ username
out_pass my LJ passwords
out_url http://www.livejournal.com/interface/blogger/blogger.newPost
out_time 3
out_blog_id 443621 (Is this my blog ID? It's the number next to my username on my - self link, sorry - info page.)
out_cat_id blank

...but I just get the following error message:

What am I doing wrong? Is this even possible? Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
I've already asked this question of LJ support, but they just told me stuff I already knew and I didn't want to push it since it's really a Del.icio.us thing, not an LJ thing.</gen7>

Is there a del.icio.us-style program I can install?

Is there a simple del.icio.us-style bookmarking system that I can install on my own server? I know that most blogging programs can be modified to do this (I've played around with Movable Type and WordPress for this purpose), but there's something very nice about the simplicity of the del.icio.us interface. I also know that there are plenty of hacks to import my del.icio.us bookmarks into whatever content management system I'm using, but I would prefer to have everything running on my server.

I have briefly looked at de.lirio.us and Scuttle, but I haven't installed either of them yet. Has anyone used these? How well do you like them? Are there other options out there?

If it matters, the server hosting my sites runs FreeBSD, and I have access to PHP, MySQL, cgi-bin, and pretty much anything else I might need. I am reasonably proficient at installing sever-side software, but I'm not skilled enough to write my own program.

del.icio.us problem

I can't get del.icio.us to work for me! The 'pop-up' and 'post' buttons in my tool bar open with IE and I think this is causing problems. Is there a way to get them to open with Mozilla instead of IE?

No problems happen if I click the post method from my saved (mozilla) bookmarks, that works perfectly, but if possible I'd like to be able to click on my toolbar..

I can't find any help for del.icio.us, at least not for this problem, not even with a google search. I'm hoping someone here will know what to do. I'd really like to use del.icio.us Thanks! EXTENDED DESCRIPTION OF PROBLEM, you don't neccesarily need to read it:
When I click 'save', whether using the 'pop-up' or the 'post' method from my tool bar, I get an Internet Explorer page that reads "The page cannot be displayed". Mozilla Firefox is supposed to be my browser. And I suspect that the problem relates to this IE/Mozilla thing, but I'm barely know anything about either one

If I then click Refresh, I am sent to My del.icio.us page, again on IE, but there is only ONE bookmark item listed (It always lists only ONE because each time I attempt to add another the first one is replaced by the new one). My tags are present, but when clicked there are no bookmarks listed. The same thing happens when I open with Mozilla.

Then to compound the mess, if I click my bookmarked link I get this message: only http, https, news, and ftp schema urls are allowed right now. if you have a really good reason i should allow another one, please email joshua-delicious@burri.to This happens with EVERY bookmark I make - for instance, http://www.born-today.com/index.htm or http://www.kokogiak.com/megapenny/default.asp or http://www.innerbody.com/htm/body.html

Bulk del.icio.us Editing

I use del.icio.us a LOT. I have over 500 links. I want to do some editing of all of my links. There are several links I'd like to delete, and it seems the only way I can do that is to open each one individuall, which is incredibly time consuming. Oftentimes, I want to add the same tag to several links in a certain category. In general, there are just several occasions where it would be very helpful to have some way to edit many links at once. Does anyone know of any utilies that make this easier (software, extensions, online sites that speed up the process, etc.)?

How do I post to multiple del.icio.us accounts from safari? I post to two separate del.icio.us accounts from safari.
Multiple accounts in del.icio.us

How should I manage multiple del.icio.us accounts with my mac? I use del.icio.us for my personal bookmarks and was just making a list of links on my blog (a running tally of Google Maps hacks), and realized that it would be easier to use del.icio.us for that too. I want to keep it separate from my personal links for clarity, since I'll be sub-categorizing the links and there is overlap with my current non-map related tags.

The problem is that I enjoy the convenience of staying logged in under my personal username and I don't want to have to re-log in every time I post a link. I only expect to update this new account once a week or so, but I post to my personal account all the time. Is there a setting or cookie I can change/delete on my iBook after I update this new account so that only my personal account settings are saved? I'm using OS X 10.3.9.
