Three questions: (1) How many current civil service employees are also reserve/national guard members, (2) How many current civil service employees were also active duty military service members, and (3) How many of both groups retired from the military? I've been to DOD, the Census, OPM ... I'm not having much luck.

Hey, so, turns out I was granted a U.S. secret security clearance! ...that I'm not using. I understand that the approval/eligibility is good for two years, but beyond that I have a few questions. (For one: can I apply for jobs truthfully claiming I have an "active clearance"?)

An aquaintance of mine works for a defense contractor company as has a fairly high security clearance. They also have a serious drinking problem and have admitted that they are an alcoholic. However, they are afraid to go for treatment because they are concerned that they will lose their security clearance as a result.

Help me get my head around the rationale or philosophy behind the budget for the U.S. Department of Defense. According to my rough numbers, it is more than 10 times that of the Department of Education. What is the justification / business case? Jobs? DARPA? China? I don't get it. Please enlighten me.

My close female friend is at college, and faces some shady walks back to her house. There have been problems with muggings and assaults on and around campus, and I'm advocating she have something on her person for protection, i.e. pepper spray. She's a very capable and confident woman, and she says she'll get something "eventually".

I am interested in self-defense classes. There are lots of methods and places to do this. The options are a little overwhelming and I know very little about the topic. Can somebody break it down and make some suggestions and/or recommendations that might be best suited for me?

The type of self-defense demonstrated on the Fox series 24 is quick, brutal and decisive. Although obviously make-believe TV, it strikes me that this probably an accurate portrayal hand-to-hand confrontations when somebody knows what they are doing. What style of self-defense does the character Jack Bauer employ in subduing or neutralizing his targets?

The Bush administration is reported to be considering using a missile defense system to knock down North Korea's ballistic missile test. Why? The chances of our antimissile systems actually working are, in my uniformed opinion, close to zero. Why would the administration remove any doubt about the complete ineffectiveness of our missile defense systems by actually using it?

I'm interested in writing a story set on a
texas tower,
an off-shore air defense platform used in the mid 50s to early 60s. However, I need an idea of how it was set up inside and I don't know how to get a map/plan/schematic of the tower. I don't every little detail about it, just how the space was set up and so forth.
