What happens to letters from demolished buildings? What happens to old lettering on commercial buildings in general? Of course, the real question is, can I get my hands on them?

I want to paint one of the walls in my bedroom so that it gives the impression of flowing or moving water. The idea is to give a kind of mountain stream effect by:
*putting river rocks along the edge of the wall by the floor
*by making a small floor indoor water fountain with the same rocks for the middle of the wall.
How can I get this effect on the wall?

I'm working on redecorating my apartment. Now, I'm a sucker for Bombay Company/Pier 1/World Market goods, but I'm saving my pennies for more important things. What are some inexpensive, do-it-yourself ways to give my apartment that "worldly," tastefully-exotic look?

I have a vision for decorating my bathroom. It sort of involves an amateurish take on trompe-l'oeil -- I know I've seen it before, but I can't think of where. I'm hoping the Hive can put me on the right path to creativity.

I want to use album covers as wall hangings. I want ones that aren't too busy, have only a few colors used, and don't have words on the front (or the words are very small). Recommend me some.

My front door opens directly into my living room...and there is no coat closet. Help me find some furniture (or other ideas!) to hide the shoes, jackets, purse, dog leash, mail, etc...or failing that, at least to get it off the couch and catch-all desk!

My new apartment has a balcony with some pretty strange dimensions. It's only 3 and a half feet deep (wall to railing) but it's over 25 feet long.
I'm really not using the space, I'd like to come up with some cool uses for it.
The best idea I have so far is a hammock (there's a pretty solid wooden awning above that I could anchor it to) but I'd almost be afraid of toppling out over the (3 foot high) rails if I rolled over.
How can I make this a space that me and my guests will want to use?

I live in an apartment overseas in China. If any of you have been over here you know how asthetically unpleasing apartments here are: no carpet, dirty white walls, wood furniture with no padding. I'm adjusting to most things fine, but the lighting in my rooms is driving my crazy. Each room is equipped with a long (a little over a meter) white fluorescent bulb. Obviously, I can just not use it at all and just use lamps and such, but I'd rather not buy a bunch of lamps since I'll live here for less than a year. What suggestions do ya'll have for making the lighting nicer on the eyes and more "homey" feeling?

HomeImprovementFilter. Also, RiskOfBrainDamageFromPaintFumesFilter. I am purchasing two unfinished wood bookcases, and plan to paint them a glossy red. However, they are so heavy that once I get them delivered (4th floor walkup) I'll need to paint them in my apartment. I'm afraid that painting them in the apartment might be dangerous, fume-wise.

I have a large (15ftx12ft) wall in my living room that I've kept bare far too long because I'm intimidated by its size and I want whatever goes up to be worthy of the space. My favorite pet solution is to create a modular "art grid" — rows and columns of open slots that would allow multiple pieces to come and go as my mood and preference changes. The smaller the grid squares, the more flexible and accommodating my grid would be. But how to do this without scarring my wall with a hundred nail holes?
